Pastor Kendall said that in the Bible agape is always referred to as unselfish love (8:45). I know that this is the traditional view but if you check all the texts in the Bible where agape appears as a word, you will see that this statement is not true. Texts such as Matthew 5:46, Luke 6:32, Luke 11:43, John 3:19, John 12:43, 1 John 2:15, 2 Peter 2:15, 2 Timothy 4:10. This differentiation between agape and philia (two synonyms in the Bible) started being made later in Christian history. But we know that whatever we call it - charity or love, goodwill, affection or benevolence - it edifies and builds us up (1 Corinthians 8:1). ❤
