Ohrid is a city in the southwestern part of Macedonia, on the northeast coast of Ohrid Lake. Ohrid and Lake Ohrid are one of the main tourist destinations in Macedonia. This city is located in the southwestern part of Macedonia, on the north-eastern coast of the Ohrid Lake. In terms of traffic it is linked to roads leading to Skopje, Bitola, Debar and Republic of Albania. The old road Via Egnatia, linking the Adriatic and the White Sea, also passed in its vicinity, which was an important circumstance for the development of Ohrid in the past. Near the city is the Ohrid Airport , through which air traffic takes place with certain destinations outside the Republic of Macedonia. Traffic on the waters of the Ohrid Lake is of little importance. It is used in the function of fishing and for tourist purposes. The only disadvantage is the absence of rail traffic.
Due to the large number of churches and monasteries, the city of Ohrid is known as Balkan and European Jerusalem. It is also known as the "City of Light", a literal translation of its old name, Lychnidos. The Ohrid region is included in the UNESCO World Heritage. According to one legend, written by the Miladinov Brothers, when the Ohrid fortress was made, Emperor Justinian climbed the hills on which the city lies, and, looking at the beautiful surroundings, exclaimed "oh-hill", which means - a beautiful hill. Since then, the city is called Ohrid. Modern Ohrid is the heir of the ancient Lychnidos. According to the data, the city was first mentioned 2,400 years before the new era. Lihnidos was on the Via Egnatia road, the oldest and most significant Roman traffic route in the Balkans.

Ohrid is best place, where you can go, its cheap(for ppl who live there) i really don't know aboiut tourist, i live in Ohrid and i can tell even its most visited city.also i would like to suggest to visit Vilage Velgosti, its like 3-4km from ohrid, its really cool place with aloot of churces and manastirs.also Velgosti have tradicional Velgoska-Rakija, its alcoholic drink alot strong, and really good to taste,also Gomleze which is main food in ohrid- and other places its very tasty and ohrid's peoples have really good pleasure about tourests they are welcome.WARNING- becarefull where you go some toursts places which can rent you apartmants can be really really expensive, so always ask the price before sleep there :) wish you a great stay! :)

visit the most famous Ohrid village Velestovo located in the mountain overlooking Ohrid. The view of Ohrid from there is second to none.

Hi, im coming to Ohrid in couple of weeks. Do you have any recomandation for beach bars, clubs, where can we have fun in general. You can name few local restaurants also, we want typical macedonian food :)

@@hellenicsouliote5250 Probably not Bulgarians for no other reason than the name registers very few entries and most originate from the Prilep region. As with Greek, one needs to look at the endings. Notwithstanding Bulgaria, the country to your north has three different endings for its Slavic majority (so not Albanians or Turks). Ev/Ov (and female Eva/Ova) is one; Evski/Ovski (female evska/ovska) is another, and finally my own Eski/Oski (female Eska/Oska) from another sector. Vele- a male name- is just the root here. To the east of the country (and into Bulgaria), it's just VELEV (female Veleva). Anyhow, this is not my paternal family name: my dad just happened to be born in a region annexed by Bulgaria at the time he was born and so Bulgarian conventions applied albeit in the local format.

Proud to be Slavic, and I never exploit the name 'Macedonia' beyond that of a regional name and choice of ethnic designation for those preferring not to call themselves Bulgarian or Serbian. But never will you hear me denying Slavic heritage, or denying the Hellenic link of the figures of antiquity! :)
I m from malaysia, I love Ohrid.. beautiful and calm city... been there, ate there, coffee there.... another place I like much is Skopje....not much to see but like the nite....
