Anton Karas - Der Dritte Mann (The Third Man) Harry Lime Theme (HQ Audio)

- The original version in the movie was Anton Karas playing solo but this version with additional instruments was released as a single and was the biggest hit on the 1950 Cash Box 100 staying number 1 for 11 weeks. While the original is more haunting and perfect for the movie, this version which I have over-dubbed onto an old video performance has wider appeal while still showcasing Anton Karas' zither genius in both composition and performance.
Still one of the best films ever made, and certainly the best theme music.
I still love to listen to this amazing Harry Lime Theme played on the zither by Anton Karas.
I am now 91 years old.
TQ.
Please promise me to left here comment when you celebrate your 100th birthday!
Best regards from Switzerland.
Me too, every time I hear this theme, I'm taken back to watching it for the first time in the theatre.
I was seven years old when this tune was first released. I loved it then. I am now seventy eight, and I still love it.
I feel just the same! 😊
u02920 Me too! Brings back memories of visiting Grandma who lived in Vienna

Yup, rather haunting, I was a wee boy of about the same age.
I first heard the piece at the age of 5 watching the film sat on my father’s knee at home. It hasn’t been played now for many years but hearing it again brings back memories!
Einer der genialsten Stücke.
Immer wieder schön zu hören !!! 👍🏼😍

Yes, it is.
I heard this when I was very young. I loved it.. Im 71 now.
Good boy. Me too. 66
Ja -- me too - I am now 88
Me too! I'm 72.
Nice boys me from get back the beatles im 22
The great film and the great music are inseparable. I *love* the final scene.
This is one of the my favorite music and unforgettable film in my life.
fabulous music for a wonderfull movie,, thanks
This spine chilling music captivated me as a ~12 year old but only because the book was read to me in a Grammar school English lessons by a delightful and cultivated English teacher. I don't recall first hearing but the film did from first view and 50+ years later has never left me. Anton Karas devises the perfect score for the best film ever made and no coincidence it was Carol Reed, Joseph Cotten and Orson Welles that made an indelible impression on me which remains today - Ponto, Weintraub, et al gave such superb performances, all from the canon of German Impressionist film making. Geniuses at work and what corridors in my mind they directed me to......still walking through door after door.
I cannot imagine The Third Man without the very atmospheric music of Anton Ksras and his zither.
By the Numbers it was a good movie, but with the music...priceless
It wasn't made by Anton Karas. It was made by my mothers grandfather, they were friends and Anton stole his life work.
Nor can I imagine the film in colour
Ha! I was 8....I remember it and loved it. I am now 80 and I just queued up the movie to watch tomorrow evening.
The zither is a beautiful melodic instrument and Anton Karas played it beautifully Reminds me of holidays spent in Austria Such a memorable time
I have loved this since childhood when I was taken to see the film The Third Man. The music is so memorable. M. Clifford
Like the 1993 movie ‘The Fugitive’, this is a film I never get tired of!!
einfach unerreicht , superschön
Memories are made of this.

Wonderful tune played by the master of the zither
One of my favorite films and soundtrack of all time
Quite simply the best!
I was in a hotel in Tehran in the late 70's when the opening tune came on the TV in the foyer. "Very good English film" said a voice. A guy from Sweden and myself sat and watched it . Not many days later the hotel was trashed by rioters against the Shar and I got out of Iran asap.
Masterpiece, always stay at my heart ,great orsen wels.
Orson was awesome!!
I’ve loved this for so many years.
The best movie music ever made !
hallo Gabi, bin Bj. ´62 & mir geht´s GENAUSO...-:)-:)
Ein 22--jähriger hier, der das Lied kennt 😉

Masterpiece - Beautiful music.
What a draconian instrument. Makes my hands hurt to watch this. Some kind of genius to tame that thing.
Just watched the movie again for the umpteenth time, totally atmospheric,no sound score ever bettered this.
It was on AMC last night. Watched for the 1st time since I was just a little kid. Certain scenes are there in my mental archives. The music is ageless.
He was a true artist!
Superbly made youtube of the great man and his hit tune. A great story and a memorable film.
Wow marvelous, just like hearing Orson Welles talking as Harry Lime on old Time radio.
Lovely but it really doesn't need the orchestra drowning his terrific zither playing out. The original movie theme is just Karas playing solo, much better. I dig his Loden jacket, very Tyrolian!
You’re so right! Sacrilege! Dark and smoky movie, vibrant music. Don’t change a thing!
@@janillemccall9177 THEY ADDED SOMETHING THAT WAS NOT NEEDED . . . DAMN IT. I HAVE THEE LP WITH OUT THAT DAMN UNWANTED HELP. Is he playing in a cave ?????
The original was perfect. Why spoil it? :-(
Here's a link to solo zither, no accordion accompaniment. ua-cam.com/video/a-W5ktOR2ts/v-deo.html
❤ wow. 1:25
And the movie? A masterpiece of the lady century.
I saw "The Third Man" when it was first released in the U. S. in early 1950.
I was 9 years old. I was instantly hooked on the music and the movie.
It's my co-favorite movie of all time. My other co-favorite movie was
made in the same year in the same country: "Kind Hearts and Coronets."
Thousand thanks for such a nice comment. At least I am not the only one who feels that way. I am born in Vienna and lived there to my middle 20's! Thanks again. The bridge you see there in the movie is not there anymore (Reichsbruecke) I believe it collapsed on a Summer Sunday early morning with only 1 car on it. A few hours later, there would have been many more casualties (thousends) because everyone wanted to go to the 'Gaensehaufl' a bad at the old Danube or just to the old Danube swimming.
I saw this movie when it came out.It shows the destruction of WW2 .I always loved this time.It stays with you.
love it since 100.000 years past and more
Ein weiteres wiener Meisterwerk
just great, the music is timeless and srill beaytyfull as when it came out,a great instrument played by a great citarplayer.super👍👍👍👍👍
I never get tired of listening to it

Maria Stevens- Me too!! Just rewatched the film - a masterpiece - one of greatest of all time
A beautiful tune, a classic!
thx. great memories of my youth
Phenomenal
Great music brilliant film, I agree with all of you.
One of the finest suspense thriller movie ever made in Britain.Great composition of Anton Karas, photography of Robert Kraskar n well directed by Carol Reed.Equally great performances of Orson Wells,Alisa Valli,Joseph Cotten n Trevor Howard.Truly a gem of movie. One of the best movies of forties.
And the scenes shot in recently-post-war Vienna are historically valuable & remarkably enticing!
Arguably the best movie ever made in Britain. The photography of Australian Robert Kraskar is brightest part of the movie. The long shot of the movie still consider one of the finest display of B/W photography.
Beautiful music, I've always loved to hear Anton Karas playing zither. As a professional musician, this piece is one which I am most often asked to play. This is music which has soul.
Thank you so much for posting.
Sir you are dead right about this music it has class and most importantly a soul and it's a timeless classic and will be around long after we mere mortals have shuffled off this planet
He is awesome!!!! I love how he plays .
But, unfortunately his fame was despised by the locals; I do not know why as his playing added so much to the film.
@@normangale3159 How do you know???? Never heard about that. Maybe it was jealousy, that happens in Vienna!
Der "Altmeister", unvergessen! 🎶
Wohl war! Überreicht 👍
I have heard many zither players but Anton really mastered the instrument.Was/is the king of the instrument.
A classic. Delightful.
In 1977, I think, I got a radio cassette player, and one of the first tunes I recorded was the Harry Lime theme. I drove my sister crazy, playing it again and again for half an hour.
The great Carol Reed 😍
And Oliver's uncle, rip🙏🇬🇧
The zither is it? Fantastic
Stuff, and a memory forever.👍🇬🇧🤔✌️ x
Faithful too the end.
This man is the King! I love him!
Karas fitted the film so well.
When I was a kid, we had the theme on a 78 rpm record- I played it all the time. One of the best themes and movies of all time!
Warm thanks and greetings from Sweden!
Every time I play the dvr of this movie, my neighbors also enjoy the opening music. And in the original version, that's Carol Reed doing the monologue. Vienna next summer or bust!! VISIT THE THIRD MAN MUSEUM while you're there. Say hello to Gerhard with greetings from the Ami who gave him the Brit uniforms. He'll know.

A real masterpiece unique
Love the shadow.Very Third Man.
Black and white for ever.
At that time life was better than now and we were younger !
Sir, life at that time wasn't beautiful or better, maybe it was, when you were from the occupying force. You really don't know what you are talking about???!!!! Are you for real....

For me it was the same. It was a great movie with great music. I am in your age and i have the same feeling.
This is one of the most interesting and beautiful tunes ever to accompany a great movie.
And if ever a film music deserved an Oscar... But this didn't ! Shame...
Love the Harry Lime Theme

Bertil Malm Varnhem
Danke schön
This movie really gripped us for decades! And all this drama was actually taking place night after night under Stalin in Russia!
WELL DONE ANTON LOVE IT
Alas not about now.
ANTON KARAS. 1906-1985 🙏❤️🙏
How can anyone not like this tune?
The original critics in 1949)50. To them " USING A PRIMITIV FOLK INSTRUMENT ONLY USED BY FARMERS AND SIMPLE MINDED COUNTRY FOLK DOES NOT BELONG INTO AN ENTERTAINMENT MOVIE""
Back in those days that statement was readable in a lot of magazines and newspaper articles world wide.
Indeed, it had been the first time in movie history that a major movie tune had been carried by a Folk Art Instrument just used for traditional local songs.
So the ZITTER in here was greundbraking.
But the movie did also CULTURE HISTORY in FASHION. The duffle coat TREVOR HOWERD sported as the leading Military Police Officer became a STANDARD ITEM since then.
Personaly I have loved those coats very much.
@@rogerlynch5279 Who cares about primitive folk instruments? The tune is still haunting no matter what it is played with.
Chao y gracias.
The greatest Film music ever 👍👍👍
Beautiful song! The mystique of the melody line will forever warm my heart and hopefully yours as well! 😊😊
I agree beautiful music, but I also liked seeing a little bit what the War did, do a beautiful city! Hopefully we never have War again. Actually we saw only a little bit of destruction. I remember going up a circular staircase where partly half of the staircase was blown away (the inner part of staircase) through a bomb of whatever! No railing just on one side the wall, where you could put your hand there while climbing at 3 or 4 floor, don't remember anymore, how many floors! Some of the stairs had a big gap so you really had to be close to the wall, eerie!
tolle Musik , toller Film
Thank you professor Anton karas fot your music for ever 🙏
Sehr schön
Anton in the LIMElight twitching his zither to impart "The Third Man" an unique undertone, that still touches our hearts today.
Truely beautiful it's in the top three most enegigmatic film themes
Thank you herr karras for your gift to movie history !!!!!
I first heard this in the mid 1950s as a 5 year old.(the old 78rpm) It has stayed with me as one of my favorite pieces of music
