Glad to see the highlighting of Black Gay Pride. I grew up in the 70's. I use to frequent and knew many other black LGBTQ fam that patronized the Club House back in the day. Back then, the black gay community didn't feel as welcomed in white gay spaces - we were tolerated. Some say we shouldn't have a Black Pride Celebration. I say, its needed. In hindsight, that was great that it happened. I must admit, back then, our Black LGBTQ forefathers and mothers included (the often) rejected black gay youths with the opportunity to see that you can be Black, Gay and Proud in this world. Many had great jobs in the city and guided young black gay youths through life challenges. Helping them navigate their way and how to show up being black, proud, and unapologetic. Keep up the work. We still have a long ways to go. Proud new follower 💪🏽👑🏳️🌈
I agree 1000 percent. Black LGBTQ Pride is 100 percent needed because many white LGBTQ people and other POC refuse to unpack their racism, even today. Thank you for sharing your experiences! Stories like yours are why I do this work. Our culture has ALWAYS been here♥️🖤💚💛💜
I’m the organizer of DC Black Pride for the past 16 years and current deputy Director of the center for black equity. Would love to provide details and context if needed.
There are some factual errors. Cleveland had a Black Pride in the 80’s DC’s is the oldest and longest continuously running Black Pride. Also the Center for Black Equity oversees dozens of Black Pride events in other cities.
I have become concerned for DC Black Gay Pride recently, I don't see gen z and millennials supporting the event. It's a very small percentage which isn't good cause whose going to replace the current generation? We have to keep it going, it's literally black history.
Black and Puerto Rican children from all over the U.S. came to Washington, D.C. for Black Pride back in the early 90's on Memorial Day weekend. You would see so many good looking Black and Puerto Rican men all over the streets of D.C., and especially in DuPont Circle during that time. Black or Afro Latino gays never felt welcome in the mostly dominated white gay male clubs or Gay Pride. Robyn Holden formerly on WHUR would have a big picnic in Rock Creek Park for Black Pride on Memorial Day Monday. Monday night, the last night of Black Pride, the children turned out at the old Tracks nightclub in Southeast.
The reason for Black Pride is because of the lack of respect and acknowledgement from the “wider” LGBTQ+ community. There is a history of disrespect and animosity that created and sustains an environment where Black Queer people feel it’s better to have a celebration focusing on them instead of expecting to always be welcomed at other Pride events.
Oh "shuck" the hell up! "to be separate and apart from the LGBTQ+ community as a whole." You mean "w-teness" and eurocentricity. DC Black Pride is afrocentric cause the mainstream prides cater to w-t men.

DC was the first to have an official register Black Pride event

All very worthy and needed, but let's not make it another reason to be separate and apart from the LGBTQ+ community as a whole.

Why wouldn’t we. Whites self segregate and its great to not be in the minority constantly. If you want to come come if not stay away
