This movie is based mostly on the first few years worth of comics. Every major plot point is directly from the comics, from Raphael's first meeting with Casey Jones to April's apartment/antique store burning and the retreat to the farmhouse...Steve Barron pulled pages that he really liked out of the comics, literally, and built the movie around them. To this day, still one of the most faithful comic book movies.
It did a great job showing the gap in their respective experience. Plus, Shredder was smart to play the defensive game, so he could easily counter the brothers’ moves. Then, naturally, he got completely wrecked when he tried charging Splinter.
Splinter and Shredder are two different father figures. Splinter only has 4 sons, but he treats them with kindness, compassion, and always wants them to work together as a team. Shredder has over 100 kids, but he manipulates them, threatens them with violence, and uses his authority to just get what he wants.
If you guys have seen the animation the part whetr Raph is thrown through the window in the animation cartoon Leo is fighting the foot the elite foot and Shredder and he's the one who is thrown through April's window amd her apartment is blown up by the shredder
The scene where Raph had his head stuck in a trash can, the actor broke his nose inside the helmet. You can see he goes to touch his face after he gets out.
Keep an eye out for the scene where Raph is recovering in the tub, and he and Leo hug, when Donnie looks at them and says “It’s a Kodak Moment” and laughs, when his mouth is open during the laugh, you can see the eyes of the actor in the costume… it’s vaguely creepy ;)
The parts of this movie that make me cry: Splinter telling Raph "I am here, my son." Raph yelling because Splinter has gone missing. Splinter telling the boy "All fathers care for their sons." Leo apologizing to Raph after he almost died, and they hug. When Spinter's spirit tells the Turtles "I love you all, my sons." When Casey saves Splinter, and drops his bad boy attitude to show him he's "a friend".
He called him "Bogeie" in reference to Humphrey Bogart, who played several private detective characters that all wore a hat and a trench coat like that.
I'm 89 too more. In Chicago we had a place called Dennis the place for games until 4am. It became violent even kid fights. It was fun! Back then no parent cared. We also hustled Cash. It's easy gambling! Kids also got robbed. Not mall spot! Pure for gangs! We knew. This was a tactic. Failed! Untill computers like in counter strike ended them.
The reason Krang wasn't in this movie is because it was based on the original 1984 graphic novels - NOT the 1987 cartoon. If you read the original graphic novels, the first dozen or so issues have the TMNT meet April O'Neil, then meet Casey Jones, then have one of the TMNT get ambushed and beaten by the Foot (in the comics, it was Leo, in the movie, it was Raph) then they flee to April's farmhouse and recover before returning to New York to defeat the Shredder where Leo decapitates him. The 1987 cartoon was aimed at kids to sell toys, but the 1990 movie more closely resembles the original source material and later, the 2003 cartoon series did, too. The original graphic novels were violent as hell.
This movie is dark but not that dark. Leo isn’t chopping heads off with his Katana blades or Raphael isn’t stabbing people with his Sia daggers. The Turtles use their weapons as a defense, not a offense.
Dominos Pizza Guy was Michael Angelo Foot who slapped April in the subway was Donatello Guy in back of cab was Raphael (body and voice) Asian gang member was Leonardo
When one of the turtles yelled "SPLINTER!" from the top of that house, they used Raph's voice, but it's actually Mikey, you can see his nunchucks. They changed it because they had to cut a scene for time. It was of Mikey showing anger for the first time, worrying about Splinter. There's footage of him punching a punching bag in the barn.
90's movies were just so much better made. I can't get over the production values, and attention to detail, in this one. Not just the story and acting but the directing itself is seriously well done. The camera work, film editing, sound editing and design are all top notch. You never see that kind of work put into live-action family films anymore. Even the best modern one's are held to very tight budgets, and it shows. We only get a few really well made films a year, these days, and they're typically either CG kids films or serious adult films. Live-action family films have been terrible for a couple decades.
I too had this movie on VHS for years I'll watch it same with the cartoon . I actually now own the DVD collection for first 6 seasons of the turtle cartoon 1987-1996 love that show n this movie.
This movie is crazy nostalgic for me because back in the day I used to rent this movie a lot at Blockbuster and on the weekends my parents would always order us pizza and take us to Blockbuster and I always rented the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. And it still holds up today and it is wildly considered as one of the best TMNT movies ever made because this movie just got everything right. The turtles are spot on, Master splinter is just as wise and as bad ass as always, the Shredder was actually an intimidating bad ass villain, The guy who played Casey Jones was perfect, they did a great job exploring all the emotional depth and the character development of the turtles and did a great job of handling the themes about the importance of family, well choreographed fight scene, and the perfect balance of comic relief and a little bit of seriousness. So yeah this movie is the perfect TMNT movie and I definitely grew up watching it as a kid and as a kid my idol was master splinter when I was a kid I actually really looked up to him. And I also like the character of Danny because I honestly related to him because there was a moment in my life where I felt just like him and coincidentally enough I also used to take kung fu when I was a kid and my dad‘s cousin was a sensei and he owned a kung fu dojo that was a mile away from my house. And he was like master splinter to me great mentor just like master splinter, helped me get through tough times, taught me how to fight, and that talk that he had with Danny about how fathers always care for their son reminds me of a conversation that my sensei had with me one time. Like I said this movie is just crazy nostalgic for me and I’m glad you guys enjoyed it definitely check out TMNT II The secret of Oze not as good as the first one but it’s still a fun time.
This movie was meant to be a lot darker in tone. The opening with April being jumped has few lines of ADR that was added later. I read somewhere that it's possible that was was going to be sexually assaulted. There's also the scene in the locker room with Tautsu. The kid he assaulted was meant to die. The film added in coughing and someone saying he'll be alright, but he's clearly not moving. I believe this was originally rated PG-13, and a lot had to be edited to bring it down to PG
Reason why I like this movie so much is because it's the most faithful to the source material the Comic version besides the few tweaks in the Splinter's backstory the Comic version most of it's still true except for the part when it gets to shin and sake in the comic version it was Saki's brother Nagi who had rivalry with Yoshi one day Nagi grew insanely jealous and went over to Shin's house and demanded that she be his wife Shin said no and he began to beat her just when Yoshi walked in to visit her needless to say it was the last thing Nagi did breathing and because of this he has shamed himself in the eyes of the clan because Yoshi himself was a member of the foot Clan and because he killed Nagi he broke the number one rule on never killed one of your own that's why he had to leave and Nagi little brother Saki vow vengeance and the rest happened as followed
I think the movie wisely simplified matters by merging Nagi and Saki into one character. I don’t know if that would’ve translated all that well into a movie. It would’ve been a little cluttered.
Fun trivia bit, TMNT and Ghostbusters take place in the same reality, there was a piece of graffiti in the sewers that read “Venkman Was Here” in the 2012 Nickelodeon TMNT series

One of my favorite movies of all time. Whenever it comes on, I have to watch it. TMNT ,Terminator 2, Transformer the animated movie and the best movie of all time Tom Hanks BiG
I loved the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987 TV series). I watched Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze (1991), (1990), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze (1991), and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III (1993) when they came out in the theatres. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990) and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze (1991), are my favorite Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies.
I laugh every time I hear Donnie say "It's a Kodak moment." when Leo and Raph share a hug. 😂🤣 Fun fact: The puppeteer/voice actor for Master Splinter, Kevin Clash also originally puppeteered and voiced Elmo on Sesame Street.
Grandparents took me and brother to a video rental place that was closing, each video was a quarter. I got all 3 of the Ninja Turtle VHSes and I forget what else. we stopped on pizza on the way back to their place and as soon as I got in, I ran and put in Turtles II secret of the Ooze and grabbed a piece of pizza, because of that opening scene. Turtles 1 is fine, maybe even great for what it is. I was _obsessed_ as only children and women in their 40's can be. It went on for half a decade until I decided to move on.
Fun fact for Cameos All four actors who played the in-suit turtles also appeared in cameos, with David Forman (Leonardo) as a gang member, Michelan Sisti (Michaelangelo) as a pizza delivery man, Leif Tilden (Donatello) as a messenger of The Foot and Josh Pais (Raphael) as a passenger in a taxi.
I remember Coming Out of Their Shells. Coming Out Of Their Shells was a studio album, and subsequent live musical tour that occurred in 1990. The tour was endorsed and sponsored by Pizza Hut. The very first showing of the tour was broadcast live on Pay-Per-View. A VHS recording of the broadcast was made released, as well as a "Making Of" direct to home video. The tour is generally lambasted for its terrible costumes and wafer-thin plot. The band featured Donatello on keys, Leonardo on bass guitar, Michelangelo on guitar/lead vocals & Raphael on drums/percussion/tenor saxophone/vocals. Guest vocalists include Master Splinter, April O'Neil, and The Shredder.
There was a guy who took a VHS with the original "free pizza" coupon from Pizza-Hut out of the TMNT case about 6 years ago and they honored it, it was on youtube. coulda been TMNT II but i think pizza-hut only sponsored the first
The movie versions (1990 and 1991) differs a lot from the cartoons. Perhaps also from the comics? Dunno. Still a lot of fun. I love all the TMNT movies, both the original and the new ones. But original wins Stay blessed!
Penicillin on your pizza, meaning it was moldy. Also, Primatene is not for bad breath, it's for a soar throat. He was making fun of the fact that he only grunts so it sounded like he had a soar throat or bronchitis.
My brother and I saw this as kids together in theaters when it came out. When we left we were literally looking down the sewers on a rainy night to maybe see them. Then went together to see it again for the special 30 year anniversary re-release in 2020. It was a nostalgia overdose in the best way...epically. 🍕🐢🐢🐢🐢
Ever notice that Raphael is the only one with an New York accent?💯🤣 And the only one that acts like a stereotypical New Yorker.😁😁 And Shredderz ensemble was supposed to mimic a samurai.
This movie is one of my top tier most favorite iconic childhood movies ever. It forever holds a special place in my heart, and I hope you do TMNT II: The Secret of the Ooze, another iconic movie from my childhood.
So much of this movie is straight out of the original comics. Some of the Raphael stuff was originally Leonardo's storyline and the plot's been shuffled around to fit into a movie, and April being a reporter instead of a programmer is from the cartoon, along with the pizza and cowabunga and goofiness, but it's otherwise a remarkably comic accurate adaptation.
It really is the best of both worlds imo. They did a fantastic job blending the serious and silly elements together. It’s still my all-time favorite Turtle project and always my ideal recommendation for anyone who wants to get into the franchise. This is such a great starting point that covers all the bases really well.
The bandana colors are linked to personality traits. It's like that in anime a lot. Hair colors, clothing colors etc... are usually linked to personality traits. Oh, and the penicillin on the pizza joke was referring to mold, not salmonella 😁
@Sagittarius Wrong, dumbass. There color has nothing to do with their personality. They were made specifically for the original cartoon to tell them apart, idiot.
@@redhaze7663 They never had Red Masks, dumbass. Common mmisconception. The original comix were in Black and White and then in Red and White, so everything was red, jackass. They weren't meant to be literally Red. ..and having the colors is way better, becuase they are way easier to tell apart and makes them more distinct. Being the same is stupid.
Funny you mention Japanese Darth Vader since Lucas was a huge fan of Samurai movies and originally wanted the Jedi and Sith just to be competing factions of Space Samurai who were feuding over who could serve the Emperor until group wiped the other out with Skywalker (originally Starkiller ) riding out to avenge the dishonorable Sith. But he ended up making them more like Arthurian Knights battling forces of evil because he thought two groups of mercenaries feuding over a government contract wasn't going to be very appealing to write 🤣🤣
27:17 yeah he did pass in eternity one after the completion of the sequel. But even though this is groundbreaking work he didn't like the film because of the violence. He was Jim Henson after all. Sesame Street, Muppet show, all that stuff. Ninja Turtles wasn't his type of project. And you're right; no one could do this kind of work like the Jim Henson workshop because the third movie sucked in quality of costumes as well as script. Because it didn't have the workshop that last time.
Turtles were part of my childhood loved cartoons. I loved these films even third film. It was like early 20's when I was able to get actual cartoons and I was like.... Geez and I thought movies were bit darker... Still whole controversy over these films and similar films was weird. But grabted there were bunch of nutjobs at the power control TV and movies what was appropriate for the children or youth. That's why in sequel they don't use weapons...
They DO use their weapons in part 2, dumbass. In the junk yard. They just don't use then as often, but the do use them, dumbass. Don't spread a false misconception, dumbass.
I don't know why they ever stopped making movies from this series? They could've kept making TMNT movies in this cinematic presentation. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the most recent ones, but these were just better. Even TMNT III in feudal Japan.
They stopped because TMNT 3 bombed hard. The fans hated it and they lost a lot of money on it. There was a concept for a fourth movie that would given each of the characters a second mutant, but after TMNT 3 bombed it was cancelled. The 2007 movie tries to continue from the first trilogy but a sequel was cancelled when the creators sold the TMNT property to Nickelodeon in 2009 and Michael Bay's production company got the rights to make new movies. That said, the 2012 CG series gets really good and gives the og movies a lot of love.
Love TMNT and I too grew up with the franchise - the 1987 cartoon, the video games, the toys, the Archie Comics of TMNT and of course the live action movies. I love this movie and it's actually one of my favorite movies, it follows the original darker comics really well and the humor does remind you of the humor in the 87 cartoon =) The 2nd movie is more goofier, but I still like it, it's a guilty pleasure. The 3rd movie is bad though, it's like they took a different script, added time travel in it and added the turtles in the plot. And I hate the Micahel Bay produced movies! Their designs in those movies are awful! And to anyone who is gonna write "but I actually like those movies", good for you and I don't care, those movies still sucked!
I'd say that Turtles isn't so much based on Star Wars... Both are inspired by old Samurai/Ninja films and Japanese culture, in various ways... Of course there's other stuff mixed in, but yeah... There's some Eastern mysticism and such... Yoda and Splinter are the typical old, wise, sensei characters... A similar thing appears in Kung Fu movies too... You don't want to mess with little old men who seem confident lol. There's a good chance they'll mess you up.
Hey that was an AWESOME SHOW you two alot of fun. I was nine going on ten when this movie came out seeing in theaters all around good time. Keep up the terrific work 👌 👏 👍 😀 💪
Awesome. We covered the Turtle Power song from the soundtrack, originally composed by Partners in Kryme, it's the featured video on my page right now, it'd be an honor if you checked it out Snoopers.
Society just sucks the excitement and fun out of everything. Nowadays everything has to be realistic, politically correct and hypersensitive. This attitude makes most movies and series painfully boring. Cause the entertainment factor suffers to the point of being almost entirely nonexistent.

I love this movie. I watched it in the theater on opening weekend in 1990.
1 of my top 10 favorite movies ever .
This was more based on the original Mirage comics which came out way before the cartoon. Hence no Krang etc…
Leo actually landed two.hits on shredder besides his right arm there is a slice on shredders back
TMNT was my favorite growing up and still is 💪🏾💯
Still to this day I think they look so much better in this movie including shredder than any other tmnt movie
Classic movie
My FAVORITE movie ever
TURTLE POWER!
Woah Halloweentown is like hocus pocus, must watch during the holiday, but insane i didn't see that was April until you said it.
The bandana colors are linked to personality traits. It's like that in anime a lot. Hair colors, clothing colors etc... are usually linked to personality traits. Oh, and the penicillin on the pizza joke was referring to mold, not salmonella 😁
Hot take but I always preferred them all to be unison with the Red bandana.
@Sagittarius
Wrong, dumbass.
There color has nothing to do with their personality. They were made specifically for the original cartoon to tell them apart, idiot.
@@redhaze7663
They never had Red Masks, dumbass.
The Director for this movie directed Billie Jean for MJ Also and A-ha Take me on
27:17 yeah he did pass in eternity one after the completion of the sequel.
Just the best movie of all-time!
"You like penicillin in your pizza".
Penicillin is in mold.
This movie and the other 2 is my favorite childhood the music I enjoyed it very much
Great reaction guys lol
GO NINJA GO!
Darth Vaders suit was based off Japanese Samurai.
Wrong, dumbass.
Darth Vader and the Storm Troopers were based on Nazi's, dumbass. The name Storm Trooper literally comes.from the Nazi's.
Hope you Guys React to the Other TMNT Movies!
I met Judith Hoag/April at Comic Con.
🔥🔥💯💯
YES TMNT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My favorite movie
such a good movie
Hellsing Ultimate Abridged is another hilarious video you should react to.
8:35 he wasn’t in the comics at the time.
My favorite turtle is Michelangelo 🧡
GO BIG BLUE!!
❤❤
Come back her i'm not finished with you, DAAAAAAMN!
Nice
Omg PC!

War and Peace.
You gotta react to the abridged parody on UA-cam called "NiggaTurtles".🤣🤣
Awesome. We covered the Turtle Power song from the soundtrack, originally composed by Partners in Kryme, it's the featured video on my page right now, it'd be an honor if you checked it out Snoopers.
....but the dumbass Rapper States that Raphael is the leader of the group when he is NOT! Leo is and I really hope he got fired for that Blunder!
I really hope you corrected the lyric!
@@GarytongueBetz-vl1fu you mean raf as the leader of the group transformed ....
@@BYDESIGNLIVE
Raf isn't the leader of the group, dumbass!
If they see?! Try liars!
19:13 :D
React to jeepers creepers
React to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 movie together
lol
Society just sucks the excitement and fun out of everything. Nowadays everything has to be realistic, politically correct and hypersensitive. This attitude makes most movies and series painfully boring. Cause the entertainment factor suffers to the point of being almost entirely nonexistent.
Maybe we talk!
