Myroslav Skoryk: Melody | Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla and the CBSO

- Over the centuries music has always brought people together and in that spirit, the CBSO dedicate the encore performance today of Melody, by the Ukrainian composer Myroslav Skoryk, in solidarity and friendship, to the Ukrainian people.
This piece brings me to tears every time
So achingly beautiful. Almost a premonition of the tragedy and injustice now unfolding to Ukrainians. Our orchestra has just ordered the score to play in Australia. Slava Ukraine 🇺🇦
This is not a premonition. It was a soundtrack for a Soviet movie. The composer was commissioned to write melody which would convey the tragedy of the Ukrainian people as a way to bypass censorship.
Where did you order the score? We would like to play this as well.
Heroiam Slava. 🇺🇦
❤
@@themeiafy "as a way to bypass censorship"? did you see the movie? It is about Ukrainians fighting nationalists in Western Ukraine while establishing Soviet Power. The composer could have easily written this music as a separate piece as he had done hundreds time during his life as a professional composer, but he got a commission and was very well paid for participating in making Soviet and clearly pro-Soviet movie.
Now you will continue that Skorik also went to study to Moscow Conservatory in order to undermine secretly Soviet regime from inside.
Played as an encore at Nottingham’s Concert Hall to silence and then a standing ovation. Why have I never heard this lovely piece of music before? It deserves to be better known. Thanks to you all. It was wonderful.
We tend to think classical music is no longer written. This beautiful piece was used in a movie, The high pass, 1981
Why you did not hear this music before? Because you did not watch old Soviet movie "Высокий перевал" it is about how Ukrainians in Western Ukraine, Carpathian mountains are suffering from terror of local nationalist.
Los hombres buenos crean, los hombres malos destruyen.
Grande, Myroslav Skoryk, gracias por tu música.
Saludos desde Bolivia🇧🇴
Incredible composite of Ukrainian composer ❤❤❤❤❤ , Myroslav Skorik. R.I.P.
The CSO played this as a tribute before their Beethoven concert tonight, wonderful piece
SLAVA UKRAINI, GEROJAM SLAVA, NORVEGIJA Z UKRAINOJU!
Slava Ukrania.
incredible. just incredible
What an incredible performance!! This is so beautiful.
Wonderful Music and Musicians! Thank You so much
What a beautiful piece
Very beautiful melody. There are composers who became known for only one piece, Skoryk is probably one of them. I'm familiar with some of his other works, i.e. for movie "Shadows of forgotten ancestors", and also his "Triptych". But this melody stands apart as very elegant, accessible, universal. Many Ukranian composers orchestrate beautiful Ukrainian folk melodies, but Skoryk reworks Ukrainian musical heritage more substantially - it is more than professional orchestration, it is based on Ukrainian musical lore, but it is also classic music and no wonder that even European orchestras like it and perform.
Stupendo e commovente
A wonderful tribute to Ukraine as an encore at yesterday & today's CBSO concerts beautifully played by the orchestra. Bravo. 🙂
I'm also surprised that it is not more popular in the West. All Ukrainians and Russians like it but Americans somehow don't get it. I got a score and gave it to some of my American friends, who teach piano, and I was disappointed by their lukewarm, polite reaction "nice". Did you watch Soviet movie Visokyi Pereval (High Mountain Pass), this melody was commissioned for that movie somewhere around 1970-th.
Bravo!
This beautiful piece was used in 2022 to accompany a video asking the world to help Ukraine protect its skies from Russian missiles. I can't listen without seeing the heartbreaking images in my head.
Why not to use the whole movie this music was written for? There were excellent actors in that movie.
Slava Ukraini!!

I absolutely love this, I heard them play it live and it was amazing. Is there a score of this arrangement anywhere, I'd love to read the score! Great job!
