    A little nitpicking is necessary: The simplifying claim "Fokker had essentially copied the design and labelled the aircraft as his own." was already refuted decades ago by the famous World war One aviation historian Peter Grosz (and others as well). Indeed, Fokker used the shape of the Morane for his M5 (forerunner of his EIndecker models) but developed a totally new structure. Instead of a wooden frame he constructed a revolutionary welded metal tube construction covered with linen.

      Hey, thanks for sharing your concerns with my phrasing. I actually didn't mean it that way but can now see how it can be taken like that. It was meant to sound more about him being pratical and emulating an overall successful design and then working it out from there. That he might have changed / did change certain aspects (even about the synchronization gear) was implied although, with hindsight, rather poorly. I'll pin your comment so that future viewers can benefit from your clarification.

      Bismarck Why do you spell "Fokker" like "Fucker" ?

  • @Orcimedes
    @Orcimedes 8 років тому +97

    Just in case people want to do their own research: the common english term for Gestängesteuerung is 'interruptor [gear]'. A (slightly) more accurate but considerably less common term for the same thing is 'synchronisation gear'.

    I fucking love this thing. It's so fucking beautiful. It's to bad you didn't talk about what I think is most interesting about her design. The way it used cables to warp the wing at its trailing edge wing tips to effectively roll the airplanes. It's crazy to think that there where men strapped in this thing to shoot down airplanes without ailerons. That's why this period of flight is by far the most interesting in my opinion. Great video!

    There were a few sloppy mistakes but you're absolutely right that good ACM is key to everything, from WW1 through to 5th gen fighters. However by and large your strategy here was excellent, lag turns, as much of a yoyo as that aircraft can manage, and making sure you didn't overshoot as the priority rather than chasing the kill so hard you overshoot and get gunned down as some often do. But do try to make sure your scissors type manoeuvres aren't early, and choosing between a slice for angles and a pitchback for radius could be a little quicker, particularly when it comes to a standard one and two circle fight. On the flip side the slower speeds makes everything happen a lot faster so you really aren't given the time to think properly.

    A couple of things, IIRC all the rotary engines used in WWI were pretty closely related, as were the guns, being various evolutions of the Maxim, adapted for airplane use (i.e. no water jackets needed with a 150 mph wind blowing down their barrels all the time).
    It is historically accurate to get in really, really close. The machine guns they were using weren't the most accurate, and were prone to jamming. ISTR reading a story of a French pilot who returned to his field after a dogfight covered in blood. He wasn't wounded, just that close to his enemy. There were also quite a lot of mid-air collisions, both between combatants and friendlies.
    While pilots didn't get parachutes, (well, the Germans did late in the war, but allied officers thought pilots would chicken out and jump at the first sign of trouble) balloon observers did.

    If you use your rudder more for turning you could have your target down a heck of a lot sooner. I've noticed in some instances the fokker would turn even faster if I went near 90deg roll from rudder input, then put in opposite rudder to roll back a bit, still in the turn, then apply rudder again in the turns direction. I usually only use stick roll to start turns and end them. Also, you need to use more rudder for aiming, so many shots you could have blasted into the guy but you didn't use any rudder to aim.

    Fokker was a pioneer in other ways. After WW1 the allies were shocked that Fokker had no idea of machine guns. The credit to the trigger gear goes to Lübbe, Heber and Leimberger.

    @Military Aviation History >>> ONE of my FEW strong criticisms of the movie *WONDER WOMAN [from 2017]* is the depiction of Chris Pine's character stealing a _Fokker Eindecker_ early in the movie to escape the Germans.
    As that part of the movie was set LATE in WWI, I would have expected him to steal a Fokker D.7, or maybe even a D.8. Eindeckers have been removed from frontline service long before then.
    {ANOTHER criticism was the CGI at the end of the movie, which STARTED LOOKING LIKE CGI. Other than that I enjoyed it. Considering the movie was a DCEU film, that is saying something...😊}

    Hello guys, I have a problem considering the way graphics appear on this game...
    I did set everything on high, 1920x1980 resolution, but the image still looks like an old PC game from 2005 inatead of what is depicted on this video (or any other videos I've seen about RoF).
    Am I doing something wrong or there are mods to make the graphics look so...petfect!!

    i assumed EVERYBODY knew Fokker was a Dutch scoundrel who stole other peoples' ideas. I mean, I'm bloody English and even I knew THAT! We English know a scoundrel when we see one. [and it's kind of ironic that the Germans starved Holland throughout WW2... of course, it was all Fokker's fault].
    one of the few truly innovative and audacious German men during WW1 was Ludendorff. Bismarck spent most of his time posing for paintings or kissing babies at Galas. Bismarck was more a figurehead than a true Military thinker as he was well past his 'war winning' days and most truly important military decisions were made by Ludendorff [ok ok, so Bismarck had a lot to do with Tannenburg in 1914 but after that? he rode Ludendorff's coat tails]

    That Nieuport was a moron. He should have reversed his turns on you, and you would have been screwed. The E-III rolls like a battleship. Just roll right, wait for the follow, then snap left and go into Immelman turn. No way the Fokker will be able to follow unless maybe he make a high jo-jo move by extending his right turn into an Immelman of his own and then barrelrols back in on you. Though the Fokker's roll is so bad I doubt he'd be able to complete that roll before the Nieuport is on him.

    The engine is not a rotary. It's a radial engine

    • @johnderouen1038
      @johnderouen1038 8 років тому +3

      Incorrect. Radials and rotaries are two different types of engines. In a radial, the pistons rotate the crankshaft (to which the propeller is attatched), and the crankcase is fixed to the airframe. In a rotary, the crankshaft is fixed relative to the airframe, and it is the crank_case_ (in addition to the cylinders themselves and, of course, the propeller) that rotates. In WW1, rotaries were used more commonly than radials, in part because the engine technology of the time was inferior, leading to lower RPMs and longer gaps between pistons' firing. These longer gaps could result in a jerky and rough-riding engine, but the heavy mass of the engine crankcase in a rotary acted as a giant flywheel, helping to alleviate these effects.
