- HobbyKing Skipper Seaplane Maiden Flight and Stuff I Ran Into.
I would like to share what I learned about the HobbyKing Skipper seaplane. Actually it's a fun seaplane and I like it.
I did crash into the ground once when I first got it at Joe Nall, because I didn't have it setup right, but most of the stuff I ran into was setup stuff like battery size, radio settings and flying techniques.
Years ago, I built an FPV Skipper, using a KK2 as a stabilizer. About a dozen iNav plane builds later, I can say the Skipper was my favorite flyer, besting my Icon and Tundra for wet work, it just lacked space for batteries. Enjoy, Dave!
Do you think the HobbyKing XL version would be good?
I have SO much want for that plane, will one day pick one up for an iNav or Eagle Tree build. Really, the original is fantastic, if the XL gives the same durability and capability, but with room for Li-Ions, it would be heaven!
Hi Dave nice airplane. you did good flying it. I like it in the air. and when it comes to land wow! in the water. cool. You have a nice day. talk soon. Smile :-) From Robert Wioch
Thanks for posting. Do you live near Virginia?
Did you try Flaperons to increase lift and maybe slower landings. I would recommend a short extension on the rudder and trim some micro steps In the main float.
Good ideas! Thanks for posting.
I always secretly wanted the skipper or the skipper XL! Great video!
Thanks Brian, I looked up the XL but it was out of stock at HobbyKing. Hope it it will still be around in the future.
I'm still watching your video. Isn't that classic ground effect holding it down?
I don't know if it's that, or coupling with the elevator, or perhaps not enough speed to get elevator authority, or just sticktion on the water.

@Dave Merc Productions I e-mailed the folks at Dragon Sailing, a US site that lists the V2 in stock. Really good exchange, nice guy named Leon confirmed they had 'em, so I pulled the trigger for $116.23. It came from Mesquite TX and took 3 days!

Very sticky little thing . wonder if you could build up the keel a bit to keep it up higher and get some more air under wing . 👍looks like a good day . what a great spot you got there 😆
Maybe it needs some canards :-)
I would manage to hit that fishing pier. Spectacularly.
It sticks because of water tension. Do some figure 8 on the water to make some small waves it will help . I had a North star had to do the same thing.
It is common, I have a Tundra on floats and it does the same thing, but if the center of gravity is too far forward then its more noticeable. The take offs are not that scale, landings are... Antennas must be 90, keep one inside flat and one out popping from the fuselage.
Well, it happened. I finally picked up another Skipper (kinda). The origin of the HK Skipper was the Joysway Dragonfly, rebranded by HobbyKing into the Skipper we know and love. Joysway released a V2 of the plane, and I had to pick it up ($99!). I'm not sure what's been upgraded yet, but will definitely cover it in the build video. My last Skipper used a KK2 for gyro, but this time it's a Matek F411 with a 1200mW AKK VTx, FrSky L9R, for medium range flying. I had to look up your Skipper video series
But the secret sauce? Molicel P42A 21700 4200mAh 45A Lithium Ion cells. I'll bet an hour flight time isn't out of the question with this combo.
Nice. Like to get on but they seem to be out of stock everywhere on the plane. Found this link but can't buy one there: www.joysway-hobby.com/professional-rc-all-terrain-launching-float-plane-dragonfly-6302-p00049p1.html

@@GhostRyderFPV Oh thank you so much!
Recommend a skid attached to rear of keel running back under the rudder for protection, it doesn't take a lot to rip the hinge off.
Good idea cuz I already ripped the rudder off on my first flight at Joe Nall.
I forgot to mention mention that. I use pin hinges to hold it now.
I found this pic on RCG of a tail skid

nice model
Thanks, It will fly off short grass too if you have a desire.
👍Like👍👍👍
Thanks for the thumbs up! Have a great week.
nice flying
Thanks D. and what great weather we had that day for a change.
What kind of flight times do you get with the 1300
Nice flying! I wonder if sticking to the surface has anything to do with your plastic film? Too many other Skipper videos show graceful takeoff, not an instant 90 degree rotation. Did you fly it off water at all before applying the film? Water sticks to all the plastic items in my dishwasher like mad. Everything else is bone dry, the plastic remains wet. Just a thought. Mine arrives later this week. I am planning to fly it as it ships, other than reducing aileron throws, as it won't be used off any hard surfaces. If the new planes maiden survives my poor piloting skills, and it doesn't rotate so radically, I'll report back.
Let me know how your skipper does on the takeoffs. I saw another on at the lake last Sunday and it did the same sort of thing so it might just be the way they work being a delta wing close to the water.
@@DaveMerc Tracking shows it should be here tomorrow. I won't be able to fly anywhere near this well, but this is how I expect the Skipper to behave. ua-cam.com/video/Fv-Dc1z5xdw/v-deo.html
@@DaveMerc I got in a couple of smooth takeoffs yesterday. Bone stock. You can eliminate design from your list as a possible cause. The search for why marches on. Good luck!
