  • In the first lecture of the series, Natan Sznaider introduces psychologist and psychoanalyst Else Frenkel-Brunswik (1908-1958) and the term she coined in the 1940s: “tolerance of ambiguity.” The term describes the ability to tolerate and accept multiple interpretations or outcomes. In 1914, a pogrom forced Else Frenkel-Brunswik and her family to flee Lemberg (present-day Lviv, Ukraine) for Vienna. She emigrated to the United States in 1938.
Natan Sznaider is professor emeritus of sociology at Tel Aviv University. His research focuses on sociological theory, globalization and remembrance culture. Born in Germany, he emigrated to Israel in 1974. He completed his PhD at Columbia University in New York. Sznaider has published numerous essays in scholarly journals and the general press. He lives in Tel Aviv.
