Incredible perspectives. Very interesting to see how the theory differs from practice and how circumstances adjust in order to make this happen. The gap between the ideals of asylum and the harsh realities faced by those seeking refuge is often vast and heartbreaking.

    Article 14. says
    (1) Everyone has the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution.
    (2) This right may not be invoked in the case of prosecutions genuinely arising from non-political crimes or from acts contrary to the purposes and principles of the United Nations.
However Gillian Triggs at the 2:50 minutes says article 13

Most people can never become refugees under current international law....Asylum seekers can only become refugees in the first safe country.
After that, they are just economic migrants.
This isn't that hard to understand

Such a great lecture, so well articulated! Why aren't more people disgusted by this?

I live beside Taal Volcano in the philippines which is active right now and could burst anytime today. Can i use this as my reason to apply for refugee visa? I'm currently staying in the evacuation center provided by our city government. The number of aloted space is very limited and we are already over crowded. Please help us.

Defining persecution is a very important thing in International Law. The left think almost anything is persecution... while the right are a little more sensible when it comes to this issue.
