Electronic stability control. ESC so you mean this system in all of Dodgeram 1500 trucks prevent the tail end of the bed from fishtailing. Thankyou for the knowledge. Your words of wisdom and advice is very appreciated.
Mr. Blair, as a fellow Louisianian and a new Ram 2500 Cummins owner, just wanted to say thank you for your efforts and videos. I have learned so much from your "ramblings of an old man." I truly appreciate your knowledge and how you share it.
Thanks for another excellent video. When ESC first came out, I thought it was a gimmick, but research shows it reduces single vehicle accidents, and single vehicle fatalities and injuries significantly. Reduces those lost control in a corner, lost traction in ice, or drifted off the road and jerked the wheel over correcting kinds of accidents. ESC was slow coming to heavier pickups, as technology usually is. My dually does not have ESC and one time I broke traction accelerating on a curved and graded on ramp towing a utility trailer. I expected reducing accelerator input to result in immediately regaining traction, but it slid quite a bit before it hooked up. ESC is definitely worth having imho.
Another recommended time to disable ESC is when going onto sand, like at the beach. It can kill momentum by slowing wheel speed right when you need it most.
Nice Job Mr. Blair, very well explained - everything made sense. Happy you brought the "Jack-Knife" experience into the explanation when towing a trailer. I sure understand the the effect of the ESC system now MORE IMPORTANTLY - Really happy you told me that it is automatically in full time operation and gets DISENGAGED when I push the button. One gets so used to the fact that you only push a button when you want it to do something. Great Job!
Good video Marion. I like ESC. There used to some wild rides in the old days without ESC, ABC TC, etc. When I got new tune for my Mustang with a Kenne Bell on top, it wouldn't get off the line and just about died when the wheels started to spin. Had me scratching my head for half a day until I realized this tune didn't have the Traction Control disabled so I needed to do that when starting the engine.
I have 34” tires on mine and had to use the smaller spare tire on right rear, it didn’t seem to affect the esc … drove it about 50 miles in case anyone is wondering….. thanks for the info👍
Thanks for this. I have a new-to-me 2018 Ram Promaster. I had no clue what that ESC button was for. I guess I should have gone back to the manual, but you've explained a lot better than the book would have done.
I’m not exactly sure,I think this system save me from crashing my 3500. Ram off the interstate and was heading for one of those cable barriers in the middle of the highways. Cruise was set at 75 and it happened so quickly I didn’t even have a chance to apply brakes. Probably won’t have been a good idea in anyway. But the truck straightened enough for me to continue riding the gravel and gradually pulled it back onto the highway. Never broke speed. Thought I was a goner. Really happened fast. Only damage was to my underwear.
For the RAM Pressing the ESC once will disable the Traction control for the Rear Wheels only. (Help For straight line burnout only) Holding the ESC button for 5 secs will shut down the ESC completely. (Full power on 4x4 offroading without restrictions).
On some vehicles, pushing the button you set the ESC in partially off mode. That means that only the torque management is turned off. So you have power to the wheels to maintain the speed, but also the spinning control working. It's like having a limited slip differential. Useful uphill in snow conditions. The Promaster has this feature, for example.
Great video! I have a new 2023 Ram 3500 Dually 4x4 6.7 HO diesel. I for the life of me can't find an esc button like my 2019 had. Why would this be?? We do alot of sand traveling at PINS and aside from pulling a fuse, can't figure out how to fully shut down the esc. Any ideas??
Your skid in Mobile Alabama years ago must have been MANY years ago! Only bridge that had the grading I can think of maybe was the Cochran Draw Bridge. VERY scarily narrow bridge with alot of dump truck traffic. It has since been replaced with a highrise concrete bridge. If that wasn't the bridge I can't think of which one it could have been.
I-65 bridge across the Mobile River has grating, we call her The Dolly Parton Bridge for obvious reasons. lol! You're right, those back wheels do strange things when you first hit it.
Question sir, if my 2WD ram 1500 2014 rear wheels off the ground with jackstands and I turn off the traction control does the rear wheels only spinning ? I hope you answer my question sir , cause I’m planning to change the oil for my transmission and I need to this test.

Check for codes, get a code reader if you don't have one. My guess is it's an ABS sensor but a code reader, (get a check one or go to autozone and they'll read it for you) will tell you.
On my truck, when I get to .05 psi, it triggers a regen. That's at idle. Can't really tell while your moving cause the pressure is all over the place. That's differential pressure between the inlet and outlet of the DPF. It's a pretty reliable indicator I have a video on this if interested; ua-cam.com/video/veth3bTw7bY/v-deo.html
That's an edge CTS, a very old one, the monitor is pretty washed out in the sun. It just plugs in to the ODBCII connection under the steering column. It's pretty interesting and helps figure out how things really work.

Just a quick question -- is there an indication anywhere on the dashboard when the ESC is on / off ? And when the ABS lamp is on does that indicate that the ESC is not on / off ? Thanks. JKB
I honestly hate the ESC system. If i want it off, i want the entire thing turned off and stay off. I cant drift the gravel roads without it cutting power and correcting as over 30mph it kicks back on. My old 1500 i can whipp these corners sideways without issue. Do not want a truck babysitting unless i want it too like the given situation you mention nesr the end.
Hi Marion. I have a 2019 Ram 2500 4x4 Diesel Limited with the rear air level suspension. I tow a 5th wheel who's dry weight is 14,250 lbs and I am getting terrible sway. What suggestions do you have to address the sway?
@@MarionBlair thanks for the quick response, also why do some vehicles have 4x4 badge on it like my Jeep, but it has no 4x4 controls/T-Shifter, whatsoever?
@@KingdomWithin7 No sure about the badge but the shiter's are not required for electronic transfer cases, just a button, if I understand your question correctly.
Well I'd consider it if they make any significant changes like the rumored egr_less engine. Cummins has already introduced their all emissions equipment downstream of the turbo but so far I think it's just for the bigger engines.
Yes, agree. I would have to wait for the bug fixes a couple of years depending on the reviews etc....Although an no egr system would be nice but isn't that what we delete them for? why wait it 2020, ha.
What I understood from your video is that The ESC is providing more traction… if you relieve traction from two wheels either front or back, it should relieve tension from the drive train… isn’t that why drag race cars have rear wheel drive versus all wheel drive?
I'm pretty sure it's just like the Jeep. When the vehicle is in 4wd high range and the Electronic Stability Control System (ESC) is on, traction control uses the brakes and engine torque control to limit how fast the driven wheels can spin relative to the actual speed of the vehicle.
Reason for my question was within a few forums many owners were/are having to push & hold this button for a few seconds, I think 10 to some what truly disable the system due to it was severely hampering the function of the anti-spin rearend. Which in snow/Ice is a bad thing: An owner wants his 4WD & Anti-spin working together & this little button keeps this from happening. Even though I know the system alone is a great addition to the Ram.
saw that last night. ESC stayed on remainder of trip, yet went off later after restart. High speed on interstate tripped it somehow, had to do without cruise control.
