Google Asiatic lion images. There is thought the Beast of Gevaudan had escaped from a menagerie. The Barbary lion of North Africa is a genetic relative of the Asiatic species. Males develop black fur over shoulders, neck and upper rib cage. It is easy to see how peasants, without so much as a picture book, would see such a specimen as a wolf hybrid. One contemporary description was that the father was a lion but the mother unknown.
