  • Receive better. Put ferrites on everything electrical and electronic in your home. And it's not just a HF thing - VHF and UHF also need interference reduction.

My neighbor, when I lived in an RV park accused me of screwing up his TV reception because I had an unusual receiver antenna on the roof. I told him it couldn't be me, but I went to his RV to try to identify the problem. We were looking at his TV's reception, which was fine, when his wife turned on the vent hood fan, and the TV image went to Hell. I went home, got a capacitor and a ferrite wire clip, and told him where to attach it. Happy neighbor.

After all these years of watching you videos I don't understand why you dislike chairs?! :) Great tips!

A couple of months back I installed ferrites in the IT cabinet in the house and also at the power board in the shed. Huge improvement. I also retired a couple of particularly noisy switch mode power supplies.

Switching power supplies are the bane of amateur radio. Back in the day we had to worry about TVI, now your neighbors TV may be interfering with you.

I perfer larger cores as to get at least 3 turns/wraps on core. I feel I get better results clipping them on the cord as close to the device chassis as possible vs the end with the plug. In my mind the thought was to eliminate the cord as a radiator. Also a great way to keep noise out of SDR receivers via the usb cable.

Sound advise and good demonstration! I find that my worst noise sources are in my own house. The best thing that I did was to power the radios from battery and switch off breakers. I ended up finding that the switching power supply I was powering my rigs with was very rf noisy at low loads.

That will help with common mode noise. Some power supplies also produce alot of differential mode noise. Try putting the small ones on each wire separately if you can. Also noise can be put back into the ac lines so add them there as well if possible.

That's why I have ferrites on all my power, speaker, and usb cables. I've even wrapped my coax through some larger ones to reduce common mode current.

Good video, but I wish you would have done a comparison with the 40 and 80 meter band as well as the AM broadcast band.

Interesting and yes I have noise, just purchased two packs, you should get a commission. Mind you, I was aware of this just never seen them as cheap 10 bucks for one at our local store is massive. Hopefully a pile of these on a few wires will do the same. Thank you.

Being into IT and electronics, running a small scale full size server rack and living in a big city is a recipie for chaos on the noise floor sadly.

The volume is all over the place in this video. I had to turn my computer volume up and down many times throughout the video. It would be good if you could apply some dynamic range compression so that the volume would stay relatively constant throughout the video. Nevertheless, a good message with this video!

I want spetrograms with and without those chokes. :D
I get most of my QRM from the street lights. The cheap smps in led lights blows everything above 14mhz and the sodium vapor ones kill everything below.
I installed chokes in my main power distribution box, ran all the mains in iron tubing, grounded, and I still have to work on the general grounding...
I just hope I won't have to Farraday-cage my antennas! HI!

Nicely done. I have ferrites all over my gear but I think I'll take a closer look and see if I can find other sources.

The real problem comes when you connect your computer or laptop to your radio via data or cat leads. Noise levels go through the roof. Will try ferrites to see if they make a difference!

Why can't all service lines to all houses have RF suppressors on them?

    • @turinskiboy
      @turinskiboy 4 роки тому

I agree with you Dennis. When there are loose terminals on power poles and lines, noise levels increase. Also, some types of street lighting can generate noise under certain fault conditions. If the fault is on the same phase that your premises are connected to, then there is a likelihood it will find its way into receivers. I have been temped to clip on some ferrite beads to the incoming line at the point of attachment to the house. I'm not sure if the supply authority would regard it as illegal. They should be obligated to ensure no unwanted noise on their service lines causes interference. I have heard it said that some of the lower quality solar invertors cause noise as well.

You have to ask why all electronics equipment is not supplied with these already fitted, Cost, cheap skates! It is only a small cost but they penny pinch at every turn.

  • @Aleziss

But what mix are you using? There are so many different type of mix and size... I did try many times to clamp ferrites on usb cables that lose connection when I transmit on hf, or try to protect a network cable that drops out when I transmit on HF but most of the time, it does nothing probably due to the song mix number to fix the issue.
I installed IP security cameras that are powered by PoE and since that day, I have harmonics everywhere from 160m to 23cm and as soon I disconnect the cameras, the noise is gone. Impossible to get rid of those harmonics with ferrites because again, probably the wrong mix
So how did you pick up the right ferrite mix ?

Technically, if you are sure of the source, you can file an RFI complaint with the appropriate radio authority. Whether anything is actually done about your complaint or not depends on your local people.

What type of ferrite would one use for HF & VHF?
