    "Are My Comments Cancerous" is a 7.5, for me. The vocals are strong, the production is on edge, the message is good, but the execution leave more to be desired. I would have enjoyed him exploring more themes and styles instead of only drawing from one source.

      Enh, i dont think Anthony's comment section contaminates other reviewer channels anymore than occurs in other groups of channel types. Anthony is most popular youtube reviewer, so theres gonna be a lot more of us on other music channels, but its prob the same w Jake Paulers and prank channel groups, Young Turks followers in news channel groups etc. Seems like a natural occuring phenomena, just in our case it shitloads of memes, which is fun and funny so other channels just have to put up w it. The real issue, the real reason we r hated is bc all of Anthony's channels are so meme-oriented and he encourages and tries to create memes himself. And we all copy him. Why wouldnt we? Its a great channel with extra bonus fun meme-ing and a funny level headed free-speechin SOB. Whats not to love? I feel sory for other channels that dont have such a good time, enjoy such great content, and have a bunch of judgemental, bitchy scolds running the show. And, tbh, Anthony is saying its up to us but hes been encouraging it all along and now shifting it all onto us when he gets shit for it.

    The entire album is explained in Kendrick's story to Pac
    In the end of Mortal Man, Kendrick reads a story to Pac about his life from the perspective of a caterpillar:
    “The caterpillar is a prisoner to the streets that conceived it Its only job is to eat or consume everything around it, in order to protect itself from this mad city While consuming its environment the caterpillar begins to notice ways to survive One thing it noticed is how much the world shuns him, but praises the butterfly The butterfly represents the talent, the thoughtfulness, and the beauty within the caterpillar But having a harsh outlook on life the caterpillar sees the butterfly as weak and figures out a way to pimp it to his own benefits Already surrounded by this mad city the caterpillar goes to work on the cocoon which institutionalizes him He can no longer see past his own thoughts He’s trapped When trapped inside these walls certain ideas start to take roots, such as going home, and bringing back new concepts to this mad city The result? Wings begin to emerge, breaking the cycle of feeling stagnant Finally free, the butterfly sheds light on situations that the caterpillar never considered, ending the eternal struggle Although the butterfly and caterpillar are completely different, they are one and the same."
    Looking at this, it recaps each song in chronological order.
    -“The caterpillar is a prisoner to the streets that conceived it Its only job is to eat or consume everything around it, in order to protect itself from this mad city While consuming its environment the caterpillar begins to notice ways to survive" this part of how story recaps 'Wesley's Theory'. The song basically describes Kendrick's life pre-fame. The first line says "When I get signed, homie I'mma act a fool Hit the dance floor, strobe lights in the room Snatch your little secretary bitch for the homies" The caterpillar (Kendrick) is gaining fame by "eating everything around him" and hustling, and notices ways to survive.
    -"One thing it noticed is how much the world shuns him, but praises the butterfly" this line recaps 'For Free (Interlude)'. The song starts with a chick yelling at Kendrick saying "Fuck you, motherfucker, you a ho-ass nigga I don't know why you trying to go big, nigga you ain't shit Walking around like you God's gift to Earth, nigga you ain't shit" showing how the "caterpillar" is being shunned. She then ends her rant with "You won't know, you gonna lose on a good bitch My other nigga is on, you off" showing how she praises the butterfly.
    -"The butterfly represents the talent, the thoughtfulness, and the beauty within the caterpillar But having a harsh outlook on life the caterpillar sees the butterfly as weak and figures out a way to pimp it to his own benefits" this part embodies the same message as 'King Kunta'. In the song Kendrick expresses how he has grown to become a big influence and a king, much like a caterpillar grows into a butterfly.
    -"Already surrounded by this mad city the caterpillar goes to work on the cocoon which institutionalizes him He can no longer see past his own thoughts" this one is more apparent, it clearly recaps the song 'Institutionalized'. He says in the intro "I'm trapped inside the ghetto and I ain't proud to admit it Institutionalized, I keep runnin' back for a visit" so he is saying that he is institutionalized into the ghetto.
    -"He’s trapped When trapped inside these walls certain ideas start to take roots, such as going home, and bringing back new concepts to this mad city" this line is also clear, it represents 'These Walls'. The walls in the story represent the caterpillars cocoon, but in the song they could represent Kendrick's past experiences, perhaps of something that happened in the hotel room that he continuously refers to, because when people use the phrase "if these walls could talk" they are usually reminiscing about past experiences that occurred in that very room. I also think 'u' and 'Alright' are from the perspective of the caterpillar inside the cocoon. 'These Walls' and 'u' are both very dark, while 'Alright' gets more uplifting and explains how he and his homies will be alright.
    -"The result? Wings begin to emerge, breaking the cycle of feeling stagnant" this line could represent 'For Sale' as well as 'Momma'. 'For Sale' talks about Kendrick's troubles with Lucy (Lucifer), which could represent the butterfly emerging from the cocoon and dealing with troubles outside of its walls. 'Momma' explains how Kendrick returns to Compton and feels guilty for abandoning his city, which the butterfly could feel as he returns to the real world after spending so much time in the cocoon.
    -"Finally free, the butterfly sheds light on situations that the caterpillar never considered, ending the eternal struggle" this line encapsulates the next four songs, 'Hood Politics', 'How Much a Dollar Cost', 'Complexion', and 'Blacker the Berry'. Kendrick is shedding light on these important issues such as the problems in the hood, poverty, and racial issues.
    -"Although the butterfly and caterpillar are completely different, they are one and the same." This last line of the story raps up the last two songs (prior to Mortal Man), 'You Ain't Gotta Lie' and 'i'. You Ain't Gotta Lie and 'i' contrast in sound, as YAGL is more chill while i is really upbeat. This could represent the differences between the caterpillar and the butterfly. This contrast helps them stand out though, much like the caterpillar and butterfly rely on each other to exist.
    In the beginning, Kendrick (the caterpillar) is alone and small. In the end, Kendrick (the butterfly) has completely changed and become something large and full of life with new ideas and outlooks. To Pimp a Butterfly.

    The ability to comment without actually watching the video, and the structure of UA-cam commenting in general helps build this culture. A short funny comment takes less than a second to read and gets an upvote from many people. A longer, thoughtful comment gets read by less people so it does not have a chance for as many upvotes. Also, comments that share opinions are (probably) more likely to get downvoted because people enjoy downvoting when they disagree; no one disagrees with a meme.

      Nicholas LaPoint the thing that annoys me the most is when a big youtuber promotes or even just likes a smaller video. Entire comment section gets filled with "LOL WHO ELSE IS HERE FROM [CHANNEL]" which all get upvoted to the top and relentlessly spammed into the comment section (can't just add onto the 3,000 comments saying the same damn thing, gotta get those thumbs) rendering it useless. Same for any music that's featured in a much bigger product. There is no comment section on Mad World that isn't all about Gears of War, for example.

    • @nicholaslapoint243
      @nicholaslapoint243 7 років тому +2

      That is going to happen whenever something more popular points to something less. You are going to have more traffic to that less popular thing (good!) but then those people might not have anything to say besides why they are there (and boy do they have to say something). It could also be somewhat because people seek others like them, and in a strange UA-cam way being sent from the same source is something in common. A double edged sword, you get more views which will give you more fans, but you also get a higher chance of shitty comments.

    • @offbrandcereals
      @offbrandcereals 7 років тому +1

      Nicholas LaPoint I downvote shit memes always

    • @Africa893

      also a potential factor into this problem is that the thumbs down button is a "close door" button(meaning it doesn't actually do anything). a million people could see your shitty comment, decide it doesn't add anything productive to the discussion and downvote it but it doesn't matter an iota. All it takes is for a thousand idiots to click thumbs up and up to the top it goes.

  • @chrisblahblahh4468

    Hey,
    I think you could do a video, maybe once a week on this channel, responding to the interesting questions or point of view commented on theneedldrop reviews.
    It will push people to ask good questions or to explain themselves more deeply, so they can appear here, on your "Responses video".
    I know a French youtuber having 2millions subs, that found a way to have a good comment section by pushing people to help him through his let's plays (he's a gamer). He really uses the comment while playing, which push people to help him. It also create a "special bound" with the subs. People get invested.
    Maybe you can tell people to put a hashtag "#question" or "#pointofview" if they want to appear here, so it's easier for you to spot them. And then only select the one you find interesting, so people are really push to go deep.
    Just an idea :)

    I'm not sure I totally agree with egg here. I think it's the medium length ones that totally get lost, but there are some read mores that definitely get buzz. Also dude used to not include the tim and eric style edits, and as the show has become this multi-channel universe and has brought in more elements of whimsical entertainment, of course the comments have reflected that. There are youtubers out there that really do focus on what they are speaking about, and have a much more dampened persona that draws less attention. As Anthony has developed what I would nearly call a character now, he has been able to capitalize on his charisma, humor, and comfort infront of the camera. (I say capitalize here in that it makes more dynamic content, I'm not implying selling out by any means). Size plays a role, but I believe if he were still doing dry unedited reviews with the prayer flags and no greenscreen, even at this size, the comments would perhaps be more music focused.

    Cancerous no, but I think many (myself included) would enjoy the comment section more if the conversations had were about the content covered in the video. However, that is sort of a downfall of generating so many views; meme's and nonsense require little effort to both create and enjoy so these types of post can (and do) receive 'upvotes' from the highest amount of people.
    A longer, thoughtful comment also takes more effort to create so many may choose not to spend the time creating these if they believe they won't receive anything other than meme responses. The culture around your comment section (and kind UA-cam in general) does not attract thoughtful replies.

Like, how pathetic do you have to be to make an account exclusively to garner easy likes for effortless shit posts? Fuck those guys.

    I feel for them, but I get you Anthony. I liked using the browser app that changed UA-cam comment sections into Reddit, but it's only good for a select few channels so I never really kept it up. Generally the comments are nonsensical and lack discussion, but that's sort of always been the norm. The main reason why I don't comment on large channels is because I don't want to attract unnecessary attention, and have my notifications flooded from replies 6 months later. Which, results in the comments section being worse, but I usually don't read comments sections unless I get bored anyway (sometimes I read them while listening to the UA-camr talk.) At the end of the day smaller UA-camrs need the insightful comments, so that's where I spend more of my energy.

    Not really an opinion or meme, but just wanted to say that making these kinds of videos says a lot about you as a content creator. It's nice to see people like you on youtube who can make quality content all while being attentive to your followers and trying to create discussion within the community without getting overly upset about the actions of those in it. Mad respect for doing this on 3 different channels as well.
    Also, keep up the positivity. Just the way you opened this video and many others by saying "I hope you're doing well" can go a long way.

    When you've been courting the 4chan audience for so long, it's not surprising that the comments section for this channel has been garbage.
    Anthony is right about the good comments not getting as much discussion or thumbs up. It's down to the audience of what they interact with, and if they thumbs up some dumb meme, that's the kind of comment section they want. I love the comments sections for science channels, and more video analysis channels, there can be valuable discussion down there.

    youtube should really add a feature that allows creators to separate their comment sections into different tabs, kinda like discord. That way, Anthony could have a tab for memes, and a tab for music discussion. Of course, that probably wouldn't stop the bland memes from infiltrating the discussion section.

  • @mj_dj
    @mj_dj 7 років тому +7

    One way to incentivize people to actually comment in a meaningful way and talk about the music could be to do something along the lines the PBS Idea Channel does with their comment responses, and highlight actually insightful critiques or points/questions raised and maybe even discuss them a bit further, instead of just 'loving' puns.
    Since you do have a tertiary channel now that you actively use to discuss any and all topics that might be something interesting to do (maybe similar to your YUNOREVIEW and WORST/BEST TRACKS video just briefly going over the best comments of the week/month). Just an idea, you know it's all just my opinion right? Love ya.

    They have definitely gotten worse over the years. I remember back in 2010 when I first discovered your channel that the fan-base was a fraction of the size that it is now. It was mostly people either commenting their thoughts or complaining if you didn't agree with their views. I'm sure there are the same amount of good comments, but unfortunately with a larger subscriber count comes more people who just post memes, causing the good comments to be buried in the sea of dumb ones.

  • @ghboy100
    @ghboy100 7 років тому +1

    Memes are great, discussion is great, but most people probably haven't even listened to the album reviewed therefore can't offer real discussion on it. It's easier to leave a meme comment, that's why there are more of these types of comments(also your channel has great memes). I watch a lot of your reviews of albums I haven't even listened to just to here thoughts on what the artists has been doing lately, sometimes you'll influence me to go listen to an album. I usually don't leave a comment at all though. You also seem to have an audience that comes to videos more for you than the album reviews but will give their thoughts if it's an album they care about. As a smaller channel you were probably getting only people that were there to discuss albums.

    Hey Antony, I commented on this video I think (maybe another one not sure) about your use of the word - Schizophrenic to describe music with lots of different facets and styles. The reason I commented was because people usually relate this word to mean this, when you might actually have been wanting to compare it to the diagnosis 'Dissociative Personality Disorder' or as it's more commonly known, multiple personality disorder. This is commonly confused with Schizophrenia, which has whole different bunch of symptoms according to Psychiatrists - like paranoia and hearing voices.
    Just wanted to make sure you weren't unintentionally spreading mis-information to your viewers. it's an easy mistake to make!
