    Thanks for sharing this with us. It's kind of funny how my first season of awareness of the Yankees was 1976 when the renovated Stadium opened and as a consequence the old Stadium has always seemed like something distant to me. Things like this make what I didn't get to experience much more real.

    I went to the Yankee Stadium Finale vs. the Tigers on Sunday Sept. 30, 1973. I still have my seat ... Sec. 33 Box 165E seat 5 .. Made of wood, steel, and a lot of paint, unlike the plastic garbage they have today.

      September 30, 1973 was Ralph Houk’s final day as Yankee manager. He quit after the 1973 season because he got tired of the “boo birds” at the Stadium.

    Well, I guess you could say that I was a fourteen-year-old " nobody" with a camera. A super 8 silent camera, as that was all that was available and affordable to a fourteen-year-old in 1973. And there aren't many of these films out there. My intent was to share a bit of history with all of you, rather than sit on these films for forty years. I hope that it has brought back some great memories for some of you.

      Brings back memories.... I was at Yankee Stadium a few times in 1973 also bring the first time going there. I believe it's was Bat Day and Ball Day. A few pitchers in the Bull pen sign my Base Ball during the game that you toss the ball down to them, they signed it and then throw it back to you. Players do not that anymore I am almost sure.
      1973 was the year Steinbrenner bought the Yankees from CBS which purchase it in 1960.

    Great footage. Used to attend a lot of games in '73 especially the Sunday DHs. If anyone remembers the last 8 rows of the upper deck were considered general admission. We would get there super early for BP and sit right behind home plate in the 8th row from the top for $1.50 if I remember correctly. The key was to get a spot between the girders to have an clear view of the field. Great times as a kid growing up.

    Went to this game. My father liked Old Timer's Day, so I would guess we went to every Old Timer's Day for both the Yankees and Mets every year from 1969 to around 1975. Old Timers Day 1975 was particularly interesting because not only was it at Shea, but it was Billy Martin's first game as Yankee manager. Nobody could guess what a farce that would eventually become. I pretty sure that was the last time we went to an Old Timer's Day.

    Great video! Thanks for posting! I was also 14 in '73 and remember that season so well; Yanks started off slow but caught fire in June, helped by new pitchers Pat Dobson and Sam McDowell, and vault into first place. Early July, Bobby Murcer and Ron Blomberg are on the cover of Sports Illustrated! I believe the Yanks' biggest lead in the division got to be around 3 or 4 games in July. I was so excited, figuring this might be the year. Started razzing a lot my friends who were Mets fans, as the Mets were struggling. Of course, Yanks faded in August and September, and finished miles behind the Orioles. Compounding my misery was the Mets going on a late season run on their way to the World Series.

    • @TheBatugan77
      @TheBatugan77 4 роки тому

      The Mets sucked that year. Finished one or two games above .500. They lucked into the playoffs. Any team can win 3 of 5.

      Fading is putting it mildly. They collapsed, LOL. Started with a double header loss to the Red Sox on July 4. I remember those two games like it was yesterday, watching them on WPIX. Was not a Yankee fan. The White Sox were my team. They had a similar season, good start, a period of time in first place, then a fast fade. I could sympathize with Yankee fans.

      That same year there was a twi-light double header where my White Sox came in to play the Yankees. The Sox were already fading by that time, though I think the Yankees were still in first place. Wilbur Wood started-yes, started-and lost both games and that pretty much finished all hopes for us Chisox fans that year. I watched both those games on WPIX, but probably didn't stick around for the end of the second game.

    I always wondered when they did the renovations how did they do the upper deck? As you see the upper deck box seats before the renovations only had like 4 rows then you have the corridor that leads to concessions from each section. After the renovations you have like 12 rows for the box seats and the main sections look the same(# of rows wise) then the corridors which lead to concessions had to have been moved up to accommodate the bigger box seats. Unless they demolished the entire upper deck and redid it from scratch...??
