There’s usually a clear lack of respect for the partner from the less developed countries’ culture and little genuine interest in their traditions, but rather a very stereotyped image in their heads (“people from this country are conservative and submissive”, while ignoring individual differences and how their assumptions may be wildly incorrect (this is basically the premise of 90 day fiancé lol). I think what is really disturbing is there’s a clear lack of awareness from the “passport bro” side of the street on how this “relationship” is clearly exploitative and fundamentally unequal. There’s usually a clear lack of respect for the partner from the less developed countries’ culture and little genuine interest in their traditions, but rather a very stereotyped image in their heads (“people from this country are conservative and submissive”, while ignoring individual differences and how their assumptions may be wildly incorrect (this is basically the premise of 90 day fiancé lol). I think it’s really cool that people are having more conversations about this topic and it’s starting to be studied, thanks for sharing! :)

I met my boyfriend through a language teaching/exchange app. He wasn't the only person I talked too, I was just trying to better my Spanish and French and was talking to people in a bunch of counties. I also travel a lot.
Anyway, the first time I went to meet him in person we were just friends and he showed me around his country and nothing romantic trabspired.
We started dating after that and I went back multiple times. Now he's in the USA on humanitarian parole (kinda like a refugee). We've been together for a long time now.
People do judge us sometimes because I went and "got" him (even though he'sessentiallya refugee not a 90 day fiancee sitch). I didn't think I'd ever meet him (his country was a red zone when we first started talking) and because of this I was really open and honest with him as he was with me. We talked a year before I went and met him, and yes, his country was still a red zone the first time I went due to political problems and it being an "election year" (it's a dictatorship under the guise of "democracy").
He said from the very beginning that he's not sure he can leave his country and even now some days he really wants to go back. We'll see what happens, I obviously won’t stop him from going back to his family but I will be sad.
We are usually very happy, but sometimes he wants to be with his family and I understand that.
