I have bought you class, and watched so many videos, but this one "freedom of movement" has be back to some basics to be able to be "what ever character I want to be"... this one, so far has the biggest impact on my spinning...thank you
THIS is the gateway to so much more for my poi practice!! I'm a dancer who recently started spinning poi and definitely a bit frustrated with the lack of flow I had... This opens up so many possibilities, and as you say, MOVEMENT! Thanks so much for taking the time to explain this so very well, I'll be studying this video for weeks to come!
You make it look so easy!! It's practically second nature for you...it's so amazing. the way you describe the freedom of expression and movement just inspires me so much. Thanks for the video, Nick.
When you are actually aware of your body making it move in fluid ways IS a spiritual journey...the physical is the temple for the Soul...try it - you might like it!
My husband bought me some fire poi for Christmas and I'm stoked!! I've been spinning lights since 2004 and I love it and I want to expand my knowledge! :) I can't wait to start using fire!!!
Woah I was just watching one of your lessons on Udemy and searched for poi flowers and came across this video. Too funny I come across a video from 10+ years ago :) I did not not know that were so many variations of compound circles with poi.... watching you do all the different variations was mesmerizing, you have some seriously mad poi skills!
GREAT ADVICE, just watching your mooves has helped my spin heaps, i'm guilty of beeing lazy to new mooves as i enjoy the ones know too much. hope to get a real lesson one day. peace love and hippy hugz
Wow. Very simply, clearly and succinctly demosntrated and explained. An infinite sheaf of possibilities opened up for me just watching that. Next time I spin, I know I will experience much freedom that following pattern descriptions has never offered me.
You are just so awesome at this. You can always tell when some one has put there time into something. Your very talented. Im gonna get a starter kit and try. Thank you for posting this video and giving such great tips. I can't wait to start myself.
I have been spinning a couple years now I really wish I got into flowers sooner but I am getting there! I have learned everything from you! You're amazing nick.
My god, that was amazing! He's so great! It's like, the poi just move on their own, like he's not even twisting them around, it looks like he's just moving his arms while the poi spin on their own. I love this video! I may have to look into buying the DVD now. Hehe. Thank you!!
I'm glad this video is here explaining flowers and all but all I really get from it in terms of learning is that I need to practice this and practice it a lot.
ty for your tutorial i found it very informative and it has inspired me to take my poi up again. You just showed me how to get over some of the hurdles ive been trying to jump on my own with no idea how to train. tytytyty so much and good luck with your future poi adventures :)
thanks for this, i've been struggling with the problems you mentioned in the vid - like not having much freedom to move as i unfortunately have a sort of boring style. but now you've given me some really good ideas to explore. cheers xx :) happy spinning
great lesson! i have been working on this for awhile, i can do compound circles on my right and left wallplanes but cannot hold a synchronization of petals for long.
great video... This vid really opened my eyes to possiblities for movement and transitions if you will. I've always felt very locked into patterns but this video made me see that getting a flow can be much easier than it seems... so thanks to the creators :) Excited to try some new tricks.
Waaaah! Why did it have to end?! I love your teacing style, I prefer 'the dance' to the 'tricks' and always have. Your DVD was the biggest fresh air I've had in a long time with poi. You rock.
ok i have been doing poi for a couple of years now and never understood why i couldnt be as free with it as i wanted to be .... NOW I UNDERSTAND!! .... I'm off out to the garden RIGHT NOW to start to practice this!!!
Is playing piano just banging on strings? Come on, you can make fun of anything that somebody else likes. You could say that soccer is just chasing a ball around. Of course it's silly if you look at it that way. People like poi because it's like music in motion.
I love doing these however having a clavicle hook plate in my right shoulder makes this exaggerated movement quite painful. But who cares it poi :D thank you Nick for everything and can't wait to see you next year at Lanquista
in my opinion the answer is in the antispin thing, because its just this patterns you gotta know to hold the flow wherever your arms are, cause its all isolated, istn`t it?
@meenik Perfectly put; I've been doing poi on and off for the past two years or so, and the rhythm of it (with out without music) is more relaxing than anything else I've ever done. I find that whenever I'm stressed out, a short, slow poi session calms me right down. Also; thanks for the in-depth and, clearly, well thought about tutorials; really giving me the confidence (not to mention the knowledge) to expand my poi-universe. P.L.U.R - Peace, Love, Unity & Respect.
@SkeyeU Poi starter kit=2 tube socks+ 2 tenis balls. haha. thats what i used, started about 2 months ago and just got my first set of fire heads yesterday. And to you nick, is there anything thats physically possible that you can't do with poi? lol, only thing i can think of is a fully isolated 3 beat weave, and even then your pretty close. Gotta say, you've helped me sooo much.
I was hoping you could give some advice. I've gotten to the point where i can handle spin and anti-spin but when it comes to keeping the moving split time something doesn't feel right and sure enough it's not coming out right. Could you explain if the split time is handled more in the wrist and if so how? or if it's in the momentum of your arms in the flower and if so how? Thank you.
@rekkuzo87 i also were close to quitting because of all the hitting (heh that rhymes) but i tell you, don t give up, as soon as you straighten your planes and stop hitting yourself, a whole new world opens up for you. Poiplaying really brought some awesome quality into my life. so keep on trying. there are also a lot of great tut vids here, basically everything i learned i learned from theses vids, be patient, hit yourself a lot,... thtas the way to mastery, its inevitable
@NoGumms88 I completely agree that there's nothing spiritual about poi, and I can't pretend I don't secretly roll my eyes at people that tell me it's a path to spiritual enlightenment. I do love it, though. It's fun, can look great, and it isn't any more or less "productive" than most other hobbies.
Thats a really great tutorial. Damn, why does it always look so much easier than it is!! Hehe, I'm not completely useless when it comes to Poi but I do get a bit messed up with all these planes!!
watch some of nick's, yutas, or nevisoul performance videos and you will see that there is productive quality in them and they are very creative. I recently started choreographing routines to songs and I would compare the choreography to composing a song or engaging in any creative endeavor for that matter. I ahve seen performances that are like works of art...at least to me.
alright so ive been working on anti spin flower for awhile now and my friends say i got the only problem is that i keep hittin the corners..does anyone know how i can fix that problem??? help put plz this guy is crazy at poi..
OK, I've got some problems, I've got some string poi, with a ball at the end, with ribbons sticking out, (know what I mean?) and it takes a lot to do flowers it seems ever so difficult, and...all the videos/tutorials I've seen are done with another type of poi, like the one used on this video, could it be it's easier? or even that it's imposible to do with the other kind? if you have any idea...PLEASE RESPOND!!!
Just wondering do these tricks work with poi that have tails?? Everyone I've seen do them has sock poi (or similar) and I wondered do they still look good with like spiral poi?
15 years later, this is still an excellent tutorial.
I need to dig out my DVDs I bought in ~2006. Agreed, still a fantastic tutorial
after 2 years of spinning i still think that is one of the best tutorial ever
terestian87 same! 🙌
I have bought you class, and watched so many videos, but this one "freedom of movement" has be back to some basics to be able to be "what ever character I want to be"... this one, so far has the biggest impact on my spinning...thank you

I've been spinning 5 years now. Seems like a long time, but I still love it.
18 now ;)
Wow! Who is this guy? He is an amazing teacher, he is as fluid with his words as he is with his poi control, absolutely beautiful!"
You make it look so easy!! It's practically second nature for you...it's so amazing. the way you describe the freedom of expression and movement just inspires me so much.
Thanks for the video, Nick.
these fricken flowers are soo perfect. the planes are perfect, the rotation, the timing, it all goes perfectly. This man has what we call flow.
When you are actually aware of your body making it move in fluid ways IS a spiritual journey...the physical is the temple for the Soul...try it - you might like it!

Could you apply these movements to nunchucks
Hello :-) Are you using the swivel poi? Just wondering; looks easier on the wrists.

Good luck to you, may the poi gods smile upon you.

I got those poi at a clown store in Seattle. I forget the name of the shop. Too bad, as they were a good set of poi.
I got Poi Balls when I went to Hawaii. These are almost as fun as twirling batons. Almost.
