- La India, known also as "La Princesa de la Salsa" ("The Princess of Salsa"), is a singer of salsa. She has been nominated for both Grammy and Latin Grammy awards. Caballero (birth name: Linda Viera Caballero) was born in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. Her parents moved to New York City soon after her birth, and settled down in the South Bronx area of the city. They moved in with Caballero's grandmother, a woman who served as an important influence on Caballero's life. Caballero's nickname India was given to her by her grandmother because of her dark features and long straight black hair.
In 1985, when Caballero was 14 years old, she was a founding member of the Latin freestyle group TKA and was featured on the cover of TKA's second single "Come Get My Love." She left shortly thereafter. Caballero signed a record contract with Reprise/Warner Bros. Records, which planned on marketing her as the Latin version of Madonna (who recorded for sister label Sire Records). After recording the album Breaking Night, Caballero decided that she didn't want to take that route in her career.
In 1994, La India together with Louie Vega recorded a house-music single "Love and Happiness" (Yemaya y Ochún) that paid tribute to Santería (a syncretic religion based in the Caribbean). This up-beat house track was played heavily in dance club's internationally. La India's involvement with Santería drew much criticism. She later recorded Dicen Que Soy (They Say that I Am) which was a 2x gold-certified Billboard hit and included the song "Vivir Lo Nuestro", a duet with Marc Anthony. Later this same year Combinación Perfecta was released.
In 2011 India still continues to release new music. India's latest songs include a duet with Issac Delgado titled, "Que no se te olvide" which has four different versions, one salsa, another an extended salsa mix, one a bachata version, and another a New York Pop version. In 2011, India has also released a new house track titled, "Tacalacateo" which she worked on with Italian DJ, Peppe Citarella. Tacalacateo debuted #13 on the Billboards dance tracks.
Luis Fernando Vega, better known as "Little" Louie Vega, is an American musician of Puerto Rican ancestry. He is one half of the Masters At Work musical production team. He was born to a musician family, as his father, Luis Vager, was a jazz saxophonist, and his uncle was singer Héctor Lavoe of the Fania All-Stars, and he started his DJ career spinning records at the age of 13.
By 1985, Louie who is cousin to Eric Vega, popular event creator and promoter in New York City began playing house and block parties in his local Bronx neighborhood of New York, as well as engineering and mixing. (Erasure's The Two Ring Circus features his earliest dabblings in the studio.) His first nightclub residency was at the Devil's Nest, in the Bronx, and later he moved to Roseland, Studio 54 and the Palladium in Manhattan. During the 1990s, Vega was playing at one of the most influential nightclubs for house music, The Sound Factory Bar. By the mid 1990s, the Masters At Work team had Vega spending less time behind the turntables and more time in the studio as part of the team's remixers.
India is the unrecognized Freestyle Queen, call it what you like but NO ONE can compare to this woman...this one deserves the crown the name and everything.. Freestyle Queen is La India..
I heard this first in the early 90s and saw La India perform this song at Wigstock in NYC in 1995....blew the whole roof off with her vocals and the music !! Everyone was absolutely floored and just danced abandon! Imagine the whole Christopher St. Piers shaking with thousands of dancing happy people. This is what house music does, good house music and India....a perfect combination. One of my all time greats.....
This song makes the hairs stand up on my back...... quality soulful house...... what an awesome vocalist..... I so wish I could have seen her live....... Best wishes from London, UK.
This is my favorite India song it is so EXOTIC and it just shows how much latinos are in touch with our Afro Caribbean culture yet we don't get credit for it. I love India.
So do I!!
I know that's right!!! She is the Queen of Salsa and Freestyle, forget what you heard! Everybody keeps telling me I'm wrong but thanks girl for reiterating what I already know..no one can touch that voice!
Hanging with DJ's in my high school years and early adulthood was everything back in the 80-90's. This song has always filled my song and brings me to tears each time. Her singing to Yemaya and Ochun, the River and Water Goddesses makes so much sense when you read the history of the two of them. As a woman, we forgot how unbelievably strong we are, we can do anything we set our mind too, and we can have love and happiness if we ask our goddesses to guide us to our calling. XOXO
*One of the Greatest Club/House Beats Ever Created! You Just Got To Believe That There's Love & Happiness!
Love her voice!! The production of this track was A-1, true house music perfection
Louie Vega one of the top top top DJ’s in the world! Cielo was his throne in NYC
This is HOUSE!!!
India is a Santera, she practices Santeria. She's speaking Yoruba an ancient African tongue. Yemaya is the Goddess of Rivers, Ochun is the Goddess of the Ocean. Viva Puerto Rico! Viva la Raza!
Yemaya is the ocean...Osun is the river. Osun is my mother :)
Marferferfun Yemaya and Oshun 💙💛

Thank you! I learned something new today.
Latin Americans and Caribbeans should acknowledge and respect their African roots, not whitewash.

Best voice ever indiaaaa x
Awesome song. Met her in Miami! Sweet lady!
She outclasses both those ladies, vocally. Her only 'downside' was that she liked good music. She wanted to sing overtop a good, genuine, soulful beat. Not this pop fluff that the queens of pop put out.
OMG I just got my life...brings back so many memories La India BABY!!!
Oh my god ..i am move by this mix...thanks lui..&india...
Saw them perform at the Sound Factory in NYC in the 90s

Had the pleasure attending and meeting Louie Vega at the Sofitel Hotel in Beverly Hills last night where he had everyone out on the dance floor. All who attended had a great time and I didn't see not one person stand around and not catch heat to the rhythm's of Louie!

I always thought she could give Janet Jackson and JLO a run for their money.
zanzibar
What , what ever happened to her ?
Well, I think it's silly to compare Janet Jackson to La India. It's just plainly silly. Whilst JLo really has no notable vocal skills, Janet DOES have them, but in mellow soul(pop). For instance, "That's the way love goes" is a masterpiece.---But La India does SALSA, that's a completely different style. So comparing JJ to La India would be like comparing Spagna's vocal skills to say, Alanis Morissette's. You DO have to differentiate between styles, otherwise you'll compare apples to oranges.
