This process becomes a habit. Let me show you my favorite color preparation process in this video. It is fun, easy to do and is perfect preparation for your painting.

    Wise advice that made me realise that’s exactly what I need to do, Prepare! I thought just the Notan was prep enough 😂 I just jump into painting and find I’m disappointed with the result. Thank you for that tip and also to say that your prep paintings are lovely. I’m going to do that from now on.

    Thank you Malcolm. Great idea to do small color preparation sketches first. Your little color sketches are beautiful.

    Your videos are an instant click, always informative and inspiring. One thing I thought about today as I received my order of tiny canvases (trying to paint while not breaking the bank) is that the idea of painting 'thumbnails' or colour study sketches take a lot of the weight off. On a bigger sheet or canvas you think 'I have to make a great painting, or at least this sketch better turn out good', whereas looking at these tiny canvases (like 5 by 5 inch) I just think 'let's throw some paint on and capture the most essential elements of the reference.

    Thank you for this very helpful illustration of preparatory paintings. Unfortunately, I often do them, but the translation to oils doesn’t work. I’ll have to keep working at that.

    I think you mention prep work in one of your courses as well, & I've been doing it ever since! It really helps, especially if you're gonna be tackling large size paintings. Thanks for sharing! I love your watercolour & pastel sketches, they're always so vibrant!

    Your "preparative paintings' are much more interesting and eye-catching than ref-photos. I like how you combine watercolor and pastels - good trick, indeed! Thank you for sharing your experience, Malcolm!

    An excellent idea! I think doing quick watercolour painting like this could help me learn to paint looser and let go of all the reference details I try to put into the final scene.

    So far I tend to focus on the structure of the picture, looking at vertical and horizontal lines leading to the focal point and also noticing other aspects of the picture that strengthen that. I also fill in the value masses, like Notan. I might crop the picture as part of the design too. Your ideas for preparation would take me further in terms of colour notes and testing these which would be very helpful. The discipline is putting the time aside to do this rather than jumping straight into painting.

    Thank to your teachings, I always do a notan sketch and sometimes a colour map. I actually find it extremely helpful. It definitely gives you confidence during the process of painting and clear purpose. Thank you for the video, your little sketches look so vibrant and beautiful 😍.

    I do the same thing with oil paint, but that means cleanup, expense and lack of mobility. I'm not sure why this didn't come to mind. With this, I can take it anywhere and not worry about the mess and cleanup. I look forward to test driving this as soon as I can buy the goodies. Thanks for this!

    Why not use acrylic colours which will be used for the actual painting?

    • @MalcolmDewey
      @MalcolmDewey  2 роки тому

      I find acrylics, oils and gouache too complex for this quick process. Also working on top of these mediums with pastels, pen or pencil is not practical. This is not about creating a painting, it is exploring, instant testing, sketching.
