In January 2012 director, actor and screenwriter Bryan Forbes became the latest recipient of the BFI's highest honour, the Fellowship. Unable to accept the award in person, he was interviewed at his home by actor Simon Callow about his remarkable career, which has included Whistle Down the Wind (1961), The L-Shaped Room (1962) and Séance on a Wet Afternoon (1964).
Forbes discusses his early career as an actor (his interpretation of Shakespeare's Shylock was cited as being the greatest of his generation) and his works as a director, often radically different in style to the British New Wave films from the early 1960s. Callow questions Forbes about his renowned ease with actors, and asks about one of the director's projects which failed to come to fruition - a film about the lives of Napoleon and Josephine.

I knew Bryan well for many years and have never encountered a more compassionate person both privately or professionally. He walked with kings and never lost the common touch. I truly miss you Bryan. As he always said to me.. 'with much affection'... Peter Roberts ( OLD VIC...Peter O'Toole's ~ Macbeth... Dir..Bryan Forbes)
Bryan Forbes what a legend thanks for uploading R.I.P Bryan you will be greatly missed.
One of the most talented, intelligent writers both in screenplays & books. His love of literature shown by his Wentworth bookshop. Also completely kind & genuine. No one left like that anymore (in that industry)
A great director and clearly a real renaissance man; when he took over Associated British he happened to walk down Panton Street in London`s West End and saw a tail of people being made to stand in the rain outside the cinema there, instead of being admitted to the foyer. He joined the queue, shivering and wet, and finally got inside the cinema and asked to see the manager. Having heard the cinema-goer complain, the manager said there was nothing he could do about it. Mr Forbes replied: "Well there is something I can do. Make sure people never have to queue in the rain here again. I`m Bryan Forbes and I now run this company - and you are fired !"
I really like Brian Forbes as an actor. As a young person Brian left a lasting impression on me as a result of his acting. We shall no see his like again.
Bryan was always interesting to listen to. He knew his subject so well. Fascinating man.
A wonderful actor, director etc. I was so in awe of him as I loved older films since being a kid and met him when he was giving a talk about his career in Southampton, which I think was in the early 1980s. I was about 16 and saw him sitting outside (it was a hotel) with glass of something and joined him. Probably bored him rigid as a simple country boy with my hopes of going to London. Funny now, but he was attentive and generous with his time. A legend.
never heard of him before, but refreshing to see not a luvie but a genuinely intelligent chap.
*Who else is here in 2019 after watching his abandoned mansion?*
glad he was able to celebrate 50 years of Whistle down the Wind
Sure love 1967's Edith Evans/Eric Portman film. The close up shot of the chain door lock and the hole in Mr. Ross's shoe always make me smile!
STILL watch whistle wind after nr 60 yrs since I sat as an 18 yr old at cinema , I was mesmerised by the kids and script , just had it !
An incredibly underrated actor and director and writer
Loved this mans films .....genius.
These Gents brought British Cinema into the new world. Forbes , Attenborough , Ray Simm et all These films of the 1960;'s should be viewed over and over again they only get better if that's possible cp
Great movies, lovely man
Looking younger than his years, good memory
0:50 What Bette Davis had embroidered on a pillow was “Old age ain’t no place for sissies.”
There are big mistakes in both French and English subtitles
An interesting chap.
"Binky" Forbes , what a lad he was , he would go into a café and say "im Brian Forbes , im famous , youre not , so gimme an egg and cress sarny on the house or youll get a visit from the twins" ha ha ha , what a corker .
