    Great post Dr Walter,
    Is it still possible to change ones attitudes towards adversity when the adversity causes physical pain? For example, let's say someone has a condition where they have constant stomach pain. The doctors are unable to give a diagnosis as to what is causing the pain. This person simply must live with the pain until the doctors find an answer. Pain automatically elicits a negative response within us. In other words, is pain an a adversity that can be overcome by altering our perception?

      I won't go as far as you did, but I will say this. People can make physical pain harder to bear and intensify it by holding unhealthy attitudes (i.e. rigid and extreme) which lead to anxiety and depression about the pain. If we make ourselves emotionally disturbed about a physical sensation, the pain then is amplified by our emotional state. So a healthy philosophy about a poorly understood pain condition, will help us 1. not make it worse and 2. help live well with it. We will accept what cannot be changed, namely, our life has this pain, and choose to live well with it, have some happiness despite it, and function with it. We can acknowledge the physical pain is real, that it is a burden, but then accept that life is unfair and has given us a burden to bear. We will bear it better if we do not demand that it not exist. Two people may have the same medical problem, with the same degree of functional impairment, and one will be in bed all day depressed, while the other will function and go to college or have a job. The unspoken attitudes we hold towards the pain will make a great difference as to how the rest of our lives will go.
