When I remove background, how can add a new background, say, black or some color or a layer? thanks

Chris, Is there a way I can extend a background rather than removing background or using layers. I use a black screen but it does not fit multiple people and invariably shows the wall or floor in the picture. I tried using the portrait/background removal and using layers but the final picture is not coming out to my liking. Any suggestion will be appreciated.
