Her character becomes a little sadder when you realize she’s supposed to be an alcoholic war veteran with ptsd from the Battle of Guadalcanal, where she came near pointblank to Battleship Hiei, did crippling damage to Hiei’s superstructure and crew, and was then ripped apart by the concentrated focus fire of like 4-5 ships.
(Her skill Solomon’s War God references her last stand.)
Her retrofit art has her firing in both directions, referencing her last stand as she was surrounded and ripped apart.
Her love line also references this with directly mentioning her fight with hiei

there are two ships named after Bartlett Laffey. and both did amazing in the war. the in-game Laffey was named after the DD-459 Laffey and the other Laffey was DD-724 Laffey. the former sunk heroically as mentioned in the battle of Guadalcanal, while the latter survived 4 bombs, 6 kamikaze crashes and multiple strafing runs. DD-724 now resides at South Carolina.

Actually, none of their counterparts are still alive to this day, the original and the basis for Javelin, (F61) was scrapped in 1949, Laffey, (DD-459) was sunk in 1942 by Hiei, Unicorn, (I72), was scrapped in 1959, and Ayanami, (1929 Type II) is as you said, was sunk in 1942, damaged by Washington and then ultimately scuttled by Uranami.
Additionally, just to complete the starter squad, Z23, (Type 1936A) was scuttled in 1944 but was then refloated by the French Navy in 1945 only to be scrapped in 1951.

This is apparent when you max out her relationship and she says that if you (the commander) were there back then she might've been able to beat Hiei. Additionally the game states that Laffey is a Benson-class destroyer further implying that she was the DD-459 Laffey not the DD-724. It is true that another Laffey exists but the point is that it is still not the same Laffey.
@@theguyeverybodylikes9667 That Laffey is a ship made in the original Laffey's Honor, due to the fact that the original, despite being sunk by Huei did a bunch a damage to the battleship. Laffey practically crippled it where it was later sunk a day or 2 later by another fleet.
