can you make a video on the m2 MacBook Air running photoshop, for graphic designers
Thank you for this real world review; seeing both the pro-level and more hobby level work flow performance really helps clarify where to spend the $$$. Keep it going!
Appreciate you watching and the kind words Robert!
As travel and photo enthusiast, I would prefer the lighter and more compact Air M2 with the upgraded memory and storage. There is no way I would carry the Pro 14 with all my camera gears when I travel. So it depends on the individuals i guess. I'm willing to lose seconds or even minutes on processing for a lighter gear.
Totally get that. 2.73lb vs 3.5lbs. As long as your sd card dongle isn’t super heavy haha
Question: what about the top-of-the line m2 air with 24 gig memory? Would that be comparable to the m1 pro? I would also prefer a lighter laptop with pro performance…
Yeah, the MBP 14" is a whole .8 pounds heavier... GASP! Maybe just hit the gym if you're that stressed over 3/4 of a pound?
@@shawnprince5262 looking for someone to help answer this question as well!
The problem for photographers (professional or not) with the Air is in the quality of the display. The Air M2 is the loser in display quality especially if you are on the road.
I’m currently thinking over whether to buy the 15” M2 Air or going the extra £500+ for the smaller and heavier M2 Pro MacBook, but I keep thinking about how much better the Pro display is over the Air’s.
Being a first time viewer, I loved the quick and to the point explanations. Looking forward to more videos. 👍🏻
Thanks for the kind words! Happy to have you here
This was extremely helpful! THANK YOU!
Chris, thank you very much for your review. I've been wondering about which computer to get, also with the idea in mind that I should anticipate the evolution and increase of my workflow in the near future. I wasn't sure that the Macbook Air M2 would be enough; you addressed some of my concerns and helped a lot. Thanks man!!
Appreciate the comment! I'm sure you'll make the right choice
The realistic tests mentioned in this video got my subscription
Thanks for the video! the real world tests are so much more useful than benchmark numbers. This helped me understand the m2 is good enough for me, I got the 16gb ram version so that should help with Lightroom.
A great video with real world examples for photograpers.
Thank you! I've subscribed for this reason.
Thank you! Exactly what I was looking for this review!
I wish someone would do a video on the maxed out version. Every video I find only talks about the base model, but realistically if a photographer is considering this laptop its going to need more RAM and storage. Comparing the maxed out to the either the standard macbook pro or one that gets as close to the maxed out air as possible (16 or 32gb ram 1TB hard drive)
If that's your budget, buy the pro
@@ChrisPieta there’s still a near $700 difference in Canada for the 14” pro with comparable specs to the maxed out air, its still a lot of extra money. Paired with a clunkier looking design. Maybe it’s worth it but I am on a budget
thanks for the review. really helpful !
honestly a good real world review instead of saying a MacBook Air is enough for everyone
Appreciate the honest feedback!
Nice video. I freelance occasionally (1-2 projects per month) as someone just starting out with a job. Budget is tight. Going with 16/512 on a MacBook air m2. Wanted to go for Pro but M1 pro isn't available here where I am. Going to take a leap of faith with the M2 air ❤️. Your video was fantastic 👌🏻
Thanks, this is so helpful. I use Photoshop mostly with extended monitor. It's good to know that the Air won't be a good investment for me.
Probably the best and most useful review on the m2 macbook I've seen so far! Thanks Chris!
Means a lot, thank you.
Thanks Chris. My wife is a professional photographer and she has a really nice iMac but she wants the ability to work more mobile and review on scene and such like you talked about. She’s always used Apple and wants to stick with it. Thanks for helping a goober like me get a great gift. LOL
Great video Chris! I was on the fence between the Air and the Pro, you helped me see the Pro will be better for my expanding photography business. Thanks!
Happy to hear that Doug! You made the right choice
Thanks for the solid review!
Great review!
I never store any photos on my machine, always external ssd
Thank you! This may be a good machine then!
Thanks for saving my sanity - I was going to risk it!
Nice video! I just ordered the 10 GPU, 24GB, 1 TB M2 Air. I hope it performs lightroom tasks moderately better than the base model 🙏. I'm shooting with a Nikon Z7.
Congrats on the new laptop!
I'm also interested in the same configuration 10GPU, 24GB + an external 4k monitor, for a Fuji XT3. Would you recommend it? How is your experience?
Any updates
@@polanialmoni6274 I personally didn't like it and returned it. I purchased the Asus ROG Zephyrus 14 and like it a lot better.
@@pherylihy58 what g14 model did u ordered? With what cpu and gpu? I'm thinking about the g14 as well! What screen res?
Do u find. It heavy? Bulky?
And is it fast when merging hdr pano in LR?
Thanks!
Hope you do the same for M3 Air 💥
Thanks Chris for this great review. Subscribed 😉🙏
Appreciate you watching!
the one thing people forget is.. they compare apple to apple.. but does any one compare it to an i7?
Another great review on the M2 Macbook air. Very informative.
Thank you Jerome
Hi Chris, thanks for the review. Just wondering, will a 16GB of RAM be sufficient for the M2 with an external display? (60hz, 1920 x 1080)
Hi Chris. I'm so glad I watched your video. I was just about to order the M2 Air but stopped after watching your video to reconsider. Any thoughts on the M2 MacBook Pro? I know it's a lot pricier but. I want something that works well and I hate lagging machines. Thank you.
Nice this made my choice to return it easier , thank you
Haha glad to be of assistance
Hello Chris I have 2 Canon 1D Mark IV’s with 16 megapixels each. I shoot documentary & sports. I will not be storing images on the laptop for too long. I would just use external storage for this. So really I need a laptop for editing.
I would be interested to see a test with a config better suited for heavy processing (i.e. Sony A7RIV 65mp files) , trying this torture test on this basic model would be misleading, specifically, I'd like to know how an M2 MBA 16gb/1TB compares with a similar M1 MBP PRO or Max
The reason we tested a base model was to show what someone with a lower budget can expect from the mac lineup. With a 16gb, 1tb config that comes in at $1800 - if that's your budget you should definitely just go with the base model m1pro for $2000
@@ChrisPieta So, then , who should buy the M2 MBA base model ?
@@ChrisPieta I would really love to hear your opinion on that. Of course, the price difference is not huge, but I would prefer to have the lighter M2 MBA unless for photo editing (Lightroom and Capture One) on an external monitor (27" 1440p) of Canon R5 files, I would really run into trouble and need to go with the M1 MBP 14". So would you be so kind as to share your thoughts on that with us? Or perhaps (since there were quite some comments in this direction) even compare the M2 MBA 16GB/1TB with the M1 MBP Pro 16GB/1TB in a similar video? Thanks a lot!
Hey Chris, thanks for this great video. Would love your guidance on something. I'm a photographer, and am considering getting the new Macbook Air 15" (M2, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD). Do you think that's good enough for Lightroom Classic? Also, I sometimes use Topaz Labs sharpening tool (This takes ages on my current Macbook pro, Intel i5 chip, 256GB SSD, 8GB RAM). Do you think the new laptop I mentioned can comfortably handle this? Thanks man, for your time :) Kind regards, Rohit
Me too looking for the same spec, I have been searching for a while and I think it is more than enough.
Fantastic video. I currently have an M1 Pro 16 inch with 16gb ram and 500 ssd. Very capable machine. BUT I am going on a backpacking trip to Asia for a couple of months and I really don't feel like bringing this heavy thing with me..That's why I was looking into buying an M2 Air, but after watching this video, I guess you would recommend me the MB Pro 14?
Hey thanks for the video! Great content! What do you think of the base model only for tethering, but to use with a FUJI GFX 50SII?
I bought the MacBook Air M2 with 8‑core CPU, 8‑core GPU, 16‑core Neural Engine, 16GB unified memory and 1TB SSD storage. I’m a graphic designer and decided to go for this computer as a backup when I will be needing to travel and not as my main computer. I already have an IMAC 27 inch so it depends on what people need. For traveling the Air is ideal for work and having an external drive will help the computer to be faster.
I am just like you I have an IMac 24" as main computer for me the Mac Book Air is perfect.
How are the colours of the display. Same as the Pro?
Great video, right to the point and it’s all about the base model that a lot of people will be getting. I’m a photography hobbyist and I’ve never done editing before. I’ve never even put my photos on a computer lol…I’ll be getting the m2 base model as a gift. Will it be enough for a beginner just starting out? I have a Sony A7C.
I'd happily accept it as a gift based on what you said! Enjoy Curtis!
Chris, I use a Nikon Z9. In my editing I have been using the LR find people, subject, background features. On my current 6-core Intel based MacBook, these functions are sluggish at best. Have you done any performance comparison using these features?
I use an Imac as main Computer and like to use laptop when i travel with my gear for me MBA is perfect but if you want to use your laptop as main computer I think MBP is better
Lightroom is a ram & gpu intensive software. Photoshop works fine and so does Capture One.
I used to have a website, and built my own webpages. I also sold my handmade jewelry, and hand knits, taking my own photos with my Canon EOS Rebel and Canon EF lens. My desktop was a Dell with Windows 7 Pro and 2T hard drive. I also took allot of photos in NYC to put on my site. I used an old version of Photoshop 5.5. Since I don't have the website anymore, I got a 13.6 M2 MacBook Air with 16 gigs of ram memory, and 512 SSD storage. I'm using my iPhone 13 Pro to take allot of photos in NYC. Question, what should I put on my Air to edit photos? Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, or should I just use the photo program that is on the Air? Sad to say when my Dell hard drive died, my computer guy took my computer and seagate external drive, until I could afford to get another 2T hard drive. Things happened, that forced me to move. I just found out the guy threw out all my stuff. My seagate had all my product photos, and NYC photos. I had almost 1000 photos, so probably would not all fit on my laptop. Now I'm starting from scratch, I wan't to know what is the best program to use for editing my photos from iPhone. Photo guy at Apple Store said, they don't support Photoshop, which I find odd. Elements you can buy, but photoshop is subscription only now. Please let me know what you recommend Chris?
Great review, thank you! I see a fair few comparisons with the M2/M1, but how about someone with an 2015 Mac Pro who is an amateur photographer/editor upgrading to the new Mac Air. Is the Mac Air M2 enough to cope with photoshop, lighroom, premier, and heavy weekend usage? Or should I think of the M1 Pro? Appreciate your time.
If you're coming from a 2015 machine I'm assuming you'll want to keep your new one for 5years+. With that assumption you should spend the money on an M1 Pro or M1 Max with 32gb of ram at least.
Bought the MBA M2 Chip with 8 core / 10 core and 24gb of ram and it has the same specs as a maxed out 13" MBP M2. Havent done any signifiant tests yet but I'm sure it will be a nice upgrade from my 2017 intel MBP with only 8gb or ram.
hows it going so far? I am looking at the new 15" MBA with 24GB ram and the 1TB storage, but still wondering if i should just get a pro.
How aobut not assuming what camera someone looking at these models will use?
Great video!!
Thank you so much!
Hello,Chris.Thank you for video.I consider buying macbook pro 16.Would you reccomend to buy m2 pro or m2 max version. I mean does m2 max really worths spending money on if you don't edit video. But of course,I want to use it long time, like 5-7 years.
3:09 or you could pay that 200 and buy an external Samsung T7 2 TB SSD .
Which of these two is better for a university use (take notes, watching videos, using excel and other stuff)?:
-MBA with 512 of SSD and 8gb of RAM
- MBA with 256 gb of SSD (with the storage issue) and 16 go of RAM
Considering that I would like to keep this MacBook for at least 5-6 years.
I'd probably go with 16gb of RAM over the storage for the scenario you outlined. I'm guessing a lot of your workflow and storage is on the cloud anyways. You can always get an external drive but you can't get more ram.
THANK YOU. I'm still torn between the M2Air and the M1Pro, but this review helps a lot and certainly what I needed to see.
The m1 pro is a beast!
Thank you!
Thanks for watching Richard
The base model of macbook air in my country is almost 2000$ and the 14" macbook pro starts at 2600 $
Nice PRX!
Thank you! My favorite watch :)
Thanks a lot !!!
I appreciate you watching Mukesh!
Another great video. It’s good to see channels help others rather than selling a product. I bought the M1 MacBook Pro 7 months ago when released. Only if I knew that Apple would release this model with the M2 chip. I Would of saved $$$$$
Appreciate that mate. Yeah I mean there's always going to be the next best thing, enjoy what ya got!
I edit gopro videos on my ipad pro using lumafusiom and I am planning to switch to MacBook for final cut pro. I don’t mind how long export takes, I just don’t want to have any lags while editing.
I decided to go with an upgraded MacBook air m2 because it’s light weight and mobility as most of my editing will be while sitting in bed or on the couch.
I will give a try for 14 days, If I don’t like its performance , i will return it and get the MacBook 14 pro
That sounds like a good choice, hope it pans out well!
hey how was it? did the Macbook Air M2 work well for you, or did you replace it?
@@namede6210 Well I had to return it and get the 14 Pro with 32GB, but here’s what happened.
First, After I got the M2 Air, I went and purchased the 14 M1 Pro 16 GB and compared it to the Air M2 16 GB, honestly I felt the M2 was better in video editing. It was a bit faster than the M1 pro which surprised me. Photo editing was the same however the M2 was reaching 108F but I didn’t see a lot of difference between the M2 and M1 pro 16GB.( I only tried using Luminar Neo which is not very optimized , but if you use Lightroom, the Air M2 will be good).
Then I got the M1 pro 32GB to compare it with the Air M2 and M1 Pro 16GB, and I saw huge difference in photo editing.
If the M2 Air had the 32GB, I would have got it, but unfortunately it doesn’t, so I kept the M1 pro 32GB and returned the 16GB M1 pro and Air M2.
If you’re not sure what to get, you can get get multiple MacBooks and compare them, then return the ones you don’t need. Apple, Amazon and bestbuy have free returns with no restocking fees.
Hope this helps
@@Youno954 appreciate that man!
Didn’t they discontinue the M1 pro chip ?
Good review but are you shooting for print or online use? Not accusing you of pixel counting but 100mb files are excessive, (and time consuming), if it's just the latter.
Both. We charge our clients a lot of money so they get all the resolution they need to play with. Often times they may recrop images to suit their marketing needs.
This is the first video I watch from your channel, you were very clear in the explanation. It's like the Air M2 is stuck in the middle: too expensive for simple tasks like Safari/youtube/Mails/iWork and not suitable for intense photography/videography task like photo/video editing, it can do these things but not in a fast proper way. I'm curious about the new 14 inches Pro M2, will it be really better than the M1 Pro one?
PS: is your surname really Pieta or Pietà? Pietà means "mercy" in Italian
Thanks for the kind words. From what I've seen, The m2 in the macbook pro that just came out is still slower than the M1Pro chip.
Thanks for that translation! A lot of people think it's from the Italian translation but it's actually Polish :)
@@ChrisPieta thanks for your kind reply, I meant the PRO 14 inches M2, the one that is not yet on the market, I hope it will be unveiled next March 2023.
What does it means "pieta" in Polish?
Great video! What brand/model on your screen on your desk?
Thanks you my friend! Lg 5k ultrafine
Hello Chris. I am a photograher and i do lightroom editing and sometimes might use premiere pro. Would macbook air m2 or go for macbook pro m2
I'd get the m1 pro
I use A7iii and im happy (till now) with my m2 8gb ram macbook air
How many photos do you edit at once on average?
I do modelling photography so I usually take 50 photos per photoshoot so I think the M2 Air should be plenty
(A7III)
Hey, I use the same. How is yours moving?
You kept assuming people who buy base MBA won't use high pixel camera or high gamut monitor. This makes this review quite limited. I have 16" M1 Max maxed out for local work with files from GFX100 and 100S. I am looking for a review for a lighter laptop for traveling and felt this review could be better.
Honestly if I made that assumption this review would be 60 seconds lol. The 100mp files you're working with would really push this machine and cause significant lag.
Are you willing to sacrifice portability for power?
Additionally, if you spec this bad boy up to 24gb of ram and toss a bigger ssd in there, it will be great for your use. But at that point it's a 2k machine
@@ChrisPieta Yes I'm old with back pain. 2.7 Lbs is the max weight I want to carry on a trip. Leave the heavy stuff at home.
Man for 1,500k it should have enough power
1.5 million?
base 8gb but the 512 ssd? Will that be good enough for sports photography?
For sports I'd go with m1 pro
Did you have a problem while editing in Lightroom with the blur effect? If so, and after that you tried using the brush to add or remove blur from the subject, did your MacBook start to throttle and heat up, making the brush very laggy? Is this a problem with Lightroom, your Mac, or just a bug in Lightroom?
great review thank you very much, but I have one question your opinion is very important. we understand that a 14-inch base model is a great option and more logical to buy that one instead of upgrading the m2 air, but what can you say about the m2 MacBook pro and upgrading that one to 16GB and 512GB? yes, I understand that this one also comes very close to the 14-inch MacBook base model, and yes I understand that this one does not have the same display as the 14-inch also touch-bar but just a moment forget about the touch-bar and display, liking touch-bar or not liking it is a very subjective thing. the argument that you and all people bringing is that if you are coming that much closer to 14 inches with an upgrade price for 200 or 300 more you can buy 14 inches but 200 or 300 is still a lot of money if you care about display quality you can upgrade 13-inch MacBook m2 pro upgrade it and not getting 14 inches and instead of adding 200 or 300 to buy 14 inches you can add 200 more and for total 500 $ buy very solid color accurate 4k monitor, what can you say about this scenario?
Thanks for your comment! I honestly don’t see a point in the m2 MacBook Pro. Watch the mkbhd review on it, it’s good!
Someone need to tell him about external ssd
Would 8gb 256ssd be fine for office work( excel, pdf, browsing more than 10 nd more tab simultaneously) or 8gb 512ssd will be good decision?
Base model with 8gb 256 will work just fine for that use! It's a great laptop for every day tasks like that
Hi! I am a hobby photographer (I'm using a canon 6d) and i want to upgrade my basic lenovo laptop (i5 8gb/256gb and some crappy intel graphics card) to a macbook. I stuck between two options: the base macbook air m2 and the the mb air m1 with 16gb ram. Which would be better? Which would last longer? This is the maximum i can afford. Or should I consider a not apple laptop? Great video anyways!
I would try and save some extra money if you want to go with apple.
But you can't compare 16gb pro to the base line model you are using
This is a very specific comparison of a situation creators will find themselves in when looking at laptops
Thanks for the review... What would you suggest (for the same pro photo /video editing) if it was between the M1 Mini 16GB, 1TB versus M2 Air 10GPU, 24GB, 512GB? I will mostly be using it plugged into a monitor at home. Thanks again!
Probably the air in this situation
@@ChrisPieta thanks. I'm actually now looking at the 14inch Pro instead.

Not until you need it
Beautiful review. Thank you.
I'm planning to buy M2 Air. I'll need to edit 4k. Videos around 15 GB size in IMovies. You think I would be okay with that?
That might work but it will be really pushing the machine. I recommend the base model m1pro
@@ChrisPieta Thanks Chris

~4hours of heavy heavy use. 12+ hours of lighter use
Hey man, I use a Nikon D750 that produces 24MP images. I want a laptop that is light and compact. I don't plan to use the laptop for editing since I do my editing in my PC but I will mostly use the laptop for just only the tethered shooting in Lightroom and let my client check out the photos. I also probably plan to use some slight day-to-day work as a student. Is the MBA M2 base model worth it?
Thank you and I really hope you reply!
I'd go with m2 with 512 GB SSD and 16gb ram at least
Hi sir I use Canon eos r5. I do photography currently, but I want to try doing video soon too. Do you thing 1TB,16GB on MacBook pro 14inch is good enough to edit 4k 120fps and 8k raw? Or I better get 32GB ram?
I’d go with 32gb ram
Talked to fast when trying to learn. Maybe having the name of computer u are talking about displayed would help
UA-cam has a .5x speed feature that people use! Some people listen 0.5 speed some do 2x speed, personal preference
Hey Chris, Im a wedding photographer and I edit on my iMac M1, but I’ve been looking for something portable that I can take with when I’m travelling, so it won’t be my main editing device AND I do keep all my photos on a Lacie External. I also work with Lightroom Catalogs so my photos are already imported with previews loaded on the catalog which is stored on my external drive.
Do you think the M2 Air would be fine since I keep my catalogs on an external and will only be using the Laptop when I’m travelling?
Sony A7iv is my main body, so my files are quite large.
You'll have very similar performance to your M1 iMac with the m2 air. The main thing limiting your performance is probably the external drive read speeds. Hopefully you're editing off an ssd!
Except most photographers are using external drives for their work flow and not the internal storage. You’re being unrealistic. In reality all you need the internal storage for is to store your editing programs. Pretty sure most people aren’t saving thousands of photos on the internal drive for editing. If anything get 16gb of unified memory.
Handsome 👍🏼
Hey you mention 100mb files, is this without any kind of compression? I usually get around 42mb from my A7r3, does that mean it handles like the uncompressed raws from an A73?
I don't have any compression enabled
@@ChrisPieta ah i see! Thanks!
Do you think the macbook air struggles with the bigger files just because of the amount of data or more like the amount of pixels? (would it handle A7r3 files with compression the same as A73 files without any? )
Thanks for the video, Chris! I think I'll get the mbp m1 pro 14 more than the M2. One question, will the base model of mbp 14 with 16GB be enough for Lr and Ps to run at the same time without lag?
If you want to future proof, bump that up to 32gb. It's fine with 16gb
Hi Chris: I really enjoyed viewing this video. I am in the process of replacing a 2015 iMac Retina along with a 2017 Mac Book Pro. I am an avid but non-professional photographer so you video has certainly helped me in my buying decision. I have decided to go with the Mac Book Pro M1Pro vs. the Mac Book Air due to your video. My question is; Should I upgrade from 16 to 32 Gig of RAM along with upgrading to a 1TB SDD? I want to 'future-proof' my purchase as much as I can. Once the MacBook Pro is ordered I will be buying a Mac Studio Display shortly thereafter once my cash-flow position improves. Do you have any further recommendations? Thanks, Keith
Hey Keith, I’d go with 32gb and 1tb to future proof
@@ChrisPieta Thanks Chris for the prompt response. If you had to choose between the two would it be the 32gb of RAM over the internal storage?
"I use Photoshop for every single photo I edit for clients."
5 seconds later
"I didn't do any deep dives into Photoshop"
Fair enough 😂
How can an upgraded chip be worse then the later model?
m2 chip is an upgrade of the m1 chip, not the m1 pro
Thanks a lot, Chris. You really made a great video!! I’m a student and I’m a super lover of taking photos. And my camera is Sony A7R3A and Sony A600. For the past, I used my PC to edit the RAWs which are shot by them. I always use Lightroom and Photoshop to do the edit work. Now I just wanna separate my hobbies from my science research work. I’m going to buy a MacBook but I still can NOT decide which one is suit for me. That’s MacBook Pro M1 pro 8CPU 14GPU 16G-512G and MacBook Air M2 8CPU 14GPU 16G-512G. Which one do you recommend for me? I really hope that you could help me! Thanks a lot! 🙏🙏🙏
I would go withe the M1 Pro. Awesome to hear you're getting more into photography.
@@ChrisPieta Thanks for your help! ❤️🙏
Haven't watched the video yet so you might have come to the same conclusion but I think the m2 is plenty powerful for photo workflows. I think the m1 was powerful enough. 8gb of ram is the issue that holds it back from being the perfect lightweight photography machine though. That's been the bottleneck with my m1 air and the reason I still use my older imac.
M2 is a great chip although you may be surprised by my conclusion. Would love to hear your thoughts after you finish the video Kris
@@ChrisPieta oh I can definitely understand how you got to your final conclusions. I think what I commented is slightly different from the question you answered at the end though. I ran into bottlenecks with 8gb just while having photoshop and lightroom open at the same time. 16gb would have solved that and made it good enough for most editing. As a pro though I agree with your conclusion and would also skip the air.
In my country base M2 Air is ~ 1600 € 🙄 maxed out goes beyond 2200 €
Wow very expensive! Come for a trip to the US and the plane ticket will make up the difference 😄
Dude, do you blink?
Never
