Many thanks for this video bro....saved me from paying for a costly repair job with the "experts". I first noticed the AC was no longer blowing cold, only to find that the heat exchanger had stone damage and needed replacing - coolant was leaking from the front. BMW provided a ridiculous quote so I decided to go it alone. The M140i doesn't have a lot of room to maneuver but I was able to complete this procedure by loosening the bumper at the top, as an additional step - that gave me the little extra room needed to get the part swapped out. There was no way I was going to remove the engine radiator to get this done, and thankfully I didn't have to. I filled the system manually and did the bleed procedure twice to get it fully topped up. Happy to report the car is back to its old self again!
same situation with my f30 330i right now perfectly described by yours. i just bought all the parts i needed of FCP euro for $750ish and ima do it myself since BMW quoted me $2500 for it 😂. Hopefully it’s easier than B58 since the b48 a smaller engine even tho it uses the same radiator.
Great DIY, look forward to seeing your test results
Really informative video. I know I messaged you about this a few days ago. For anyone interested, the tubing on my heat exchanger got damaged. I’ll be upgrading based on this video. What I wanted to add was that, and I’m not sure if this is because it was hot and I was driving for about 30min to the mechanic, once my coolant began to get super low the a/c started blowing hot air. Whether that’s a sensor or because the car was beginning to overheat I do not know. But thanks for all the help Kern you’re awesome.

Thank you so much for the video. I’ve been going in circles looking for a diy video.
Great video learning everything I need to learn about my 440i
WOW!!! I searched everywhere for some sort of installation instructions on this! Even tried looking up replacing a B58 radiator... NOTHING! I did the whole thing by myself last week with no video or instructions! One week later there’s a How to video 😂 lol
Lol sorry man. I saw the only video on UA-cam was incomplete so i wanted to add one that was start to finish. Hope this helps the next guy 👍🏾
Yup I seen that one! Although I did learn a bit from this video! Thanks brotha💪🏼
This is probably the best DIY out there for this install, great job man.
I really appreciate it
Great Video. Very detailed. Thanks
Thanks for the video. It helps.
Do you know the part # for the coolant hose above the pulley and under Lower charge pipe side?
do you need to bleed the high end circuit if you don’t take off the engine radiator? thanks kern
Dose it improve the A/C performance in hot days
hi what did you pour into the expansion cap? thank you
What tools do I need to get this done myself?
just ordered the same heat exchanger. but Im curious to know if there is no upgrade for the engine intercooler behind this one, or if it's not something that even needs to be messed with.
The other heat exchanger is the main radiator for the engine and doesn't need to be upgraded
Will this also work with the 4 cylinder b48?
Can you please provide an update on bleeding the high temp circuit? No links in the description about it 😕
Sorry about that. I'll add it to the description.
thank you man
Can I flush/replace coolant and charge coolant just from under without removing all the top bits from the bonnet you removed?
It's worth a shot. Depending on the hose you choose, you may need to at least remove the fan shroud.
Enjoyed the video. A bit of a basic question but why is there a radiator and another heat exchange? What function(s) do each serve in the B58?
The heat exchanger that I replaced is a part of the air to water intercooler system. The other radiator(s) are for the engine/turbo/etc cooling system.
Thanks for that!
Does the heat exchanger that you replaced also function as the a/c condenser? And if not, where would this be located?
Clearly not related to a heat exchanger modification but the reason I’m asking is because I just experienced a road kill and will have to replace some of the surrounding parts. There doesn’t seem to be any videos explaining the parts breakdown clearly.
@@drummerboycaleb no, the a/c is separate
@kern417 did you see at any point in this procedure the mix of distilled water plus water wetter turn into foam ?
Not that i can remember
Great video. How much coolant is needed to fill the system with the csf?
It takes ~.5 gallons more than the stock heat exchanger. After I was done I ended up putting about a gallon back in so that covered what drained out and the extra capacity.
@@kern417 thanks for the quick reply. And appreciate your contribution to the B58 community, sir.
Do you need to bleed the high side using the bleed screw? Or does the electric bleed work for both sides? I know that's an old school method.
You can just do the electric bleed but the bleed screw helps fill it up faster
Thanks for your video, I just got a broken line on my frontal radiator, and I need to be sure that part was leaking, do you need to drain the engine radiator on a b48 engine too?
drain the circuit that you are working on. you don't have to drain both if you aren't working on both
@@kern417 thanks, I just don't want to unplug the engine radiator if it's not necessary. And thanks for the video it's really well explained
I love your open toed steel toe boots my guy!
is there an upgrade for the motor cooling system? like this heat exchanger
Not that I'm saying but it's not really needed
I am wondering, I seem to be the only one around trying to do some sort of tuning to a 740i... my questions is:
I am having an issue where my expansion tank is being pressurized beyond the 140 limit of the cap, and once that happens, the liquid coming back in the return line, spills out due to the pressure. Would this heat exchanger work, on my 2016 740i? I tried contacting CSF, but, they referred me to a distributor, I was just shooting in the dark by commenting on the video, see if anyone knows.
My thinking is, the car is overheating to the boiling point, creating pressure, hence the issue at the expansion tank. The only Mod on the vehicle at the moment (because I am trying to overcome this coolant loss issue before adding more) is the Down Pipe, It now has a VSRF Catless pipe, and with an MHD mod, from stage 0 to stage 1, same issue of overheating.
I am just wondering if this CSF heat exchanger would fit the 2016 740i B58. Thank you in advance...
In theory, what is « required « to run bm3 stage 2 safely on a b58 340i ? Is Catless with high flow air sufficient?
Yes, all you need is a downpipe
In a more recent video I was disappointed to hear that you didn't see the value in the Dinan intake shown on the car. Now I have crossed that off my 440i wish list. How are you liking this CSF product. Is it worth buying?
It's worth it if you do more than daily driving. The primary benefit i saw was more stable IATs when doing back to back pulls. I'll have a full video review coming soon
Does the heat exchanger truly help with cooling when you increase boost? Does it increase horsepower as well
Yes, I'll have a video coming hopefully next week for a proper review
kern417 awesome thanks, I am tuning my 440 and don’t want to do the whole process of getting the heat exchanger unless it’s truly going to help with heat soaking my turbo and help with boost
Why did you upgrade?
Nice Instrument Cluster who did you purchase/coding from?
I ordered my car with it from the factory
my mechanic added an entire water wetter bottle after installing the heat exchanger. should I suck up some of the coolant in the reservoir and replace it with water?
It's not the end of the world but wouldn't hurt
@@kern417 what does you water look like with bmw coolant + watter wetter? Mine is pretty clear when I pour it in a bottle, but once it's in the bottle, it's like a dark brown.
@@jp_b58 water wetter is red and coolant is blue or green so that kind of makes sense. mine is an orangish brown.
Great DIY, what coolant and mixture should I do if I move to Alaska?
50/50 protects to sub freezing temps. On the bottle it says 50/50 down to -34°F, or 60/40 down to -62°F. So depends on how cold it gets in winter.
Mixture always? Or we can put full coolant?
@@patou_supercharged13 always mix
@@kern417 if i live in a tropical country where temp is always above 30degC, do you think its okay to put 100% distilled water? Or the 50/50 mix is still preferred. Just to have different colors of liquid for the HT and LT circuit.
The lowest they recommend i believe is 30/70 because the coolant has some lubricating properties as well
Do you know what that electric motor noise is at 16:57 by any chance? I hear it when I unlock the car and have always wondered what it was
Throttle body/valvetronic motor adaptation i believe
@@kern417 makes total sense, thanks!
Bmw green coolant shoukd always be used its the only one tbat dont create that limescale theres also a bleeder screw on the manifold closest to bulkhead
So I watched this and everything worked perfectly fine. The only problem I’m having is putting the hose back on on the driver side of the new heat exchanger. For some reason it won’t go all the way in and the clip won’t engage.
You just have to push really hard. And make sure the notch is lined up so it's rotated properly
Is this possible by taking the front bumper off??
Sure
the coolant is applied manually or is applied with some pumping equipment. Thank. Great video
I did it manually. Using a vacuum pump will be faster but not 100% needed.
@@kern417 Hello, do you know if for the m140 it is not necessary to disconnect the second intercooler, to make the change equal to the video?
It should be the same. There's not a lot of space, but it can be done.
Does anyone know if this will also work on the 2017 g30 540i?
g-series has a unique setup so it's not the same
What kind of coolant did you use?
G12
Do you have the link to the csf web link?
It's in the description
the coolant that was drained out , can you just re fill that back in , and let it cycle ?
That's basically what the bleed procedure does. When you first pour the coolant and there will be some air that will prevent it from fully filling up, so you need to run the water pump to cycle it through and push out the air bubbles
@@kern417 yea i get the cycle part , but i meant the coolant that drained out the hoses , u can just pour it back in no ? lol
oh yeah if it's clean
@@kern417 i went and got the heat exchanger but i noticed .. there is no perf radiator for 340s ?
Not that I've seen
When I go to pull the heat exchanger out it’s stuck on the drivers side seems like on the bottom? Any idea?
Make sure it's unclipped and the hose is clearing the oil cooler
@@kern417 HI! I have the same problem :( I just can not pull it out. Spent 2.5 hours and nothing helped :( The hose is unclipped, but it is stuck at the bottom. Anyway, your video is great! I did it everything according your guide ;), but failed at the finale stage :(
May I ask you, how did you solve the problem? I have same issue :( thanks!
bro howd you get the driver sode clip off of the heat exchanger with the engine intercoller still on ?
Same I can't get my driver's side clips off. And the larger engine radiator hose on the passenger side won't come out so I can't take off the radiator
I crashed my 340i and I’m trying to figure out if I need one or two auxiliary radiator. How can I find out??
Was it msport? The bumper either has 1 or 2 openings in the lower corners
It has m package but it’s a normal 2017 340i
@@kern417 I don’t know if it had one or two because the front was damaged so I only can see one
Look at a pic of the bumper before the crash.
@@kern417 how could I send you two pics to help me determine what it is. I can only see one but a different opinion wouldn’t hurt
Just an update..I tried to fit my self according the video...The video is great and very accurate, but some very important steps are missing! Like, the right side of the charge cooler also has a push clip, what is impossible to compress, because there is no room! Even, after lots of misery you could do it, very difficult to pull it out, because there is no room. To slide it in the new performance charger ( which is much bigger) is already impossible! I suggest, and the BMW service/repair is right, REMOVE THE RADIATOR and you save lots of time and worrying..
Sorry, I thought that was pretty self explanatory. Most of the video I show what to do on one side and you just know to do it on the other.
All I used was a pick tool and a screw driver to squeeze the tabs and pull it off. Installation was the same way.
how much you pay for the digital dash ??, it's so sexyyyy but so expensive 😞😞😞😭
I ordered my car with it. It was a $350 option from BMW.
kern417 only 350$ omg lol, why kies selling for 2 k 😭, anywhere to get it for cheaper?
@@rashad3286 have no idea man, sorry.
@@rashad3286 I'm looking for one too. It's way cheaper as an add on from when you order the car as opposed to buying it OEM after.
another great video. My radiator has just sprung a leak so will be doing this asap. Anyone know if the BMW rock guards fit on the rad prior to installation of afterwards through the front kidney grilles? Will attempt this method to fit my new OEM rad
I think you have to remove the whole bumper. It's 2 pieces - an upper and a lower section
The fitment is wack man, lol had a hard time with mine
GET ON WITH THE JOB LESS TALK
NO. HOPE THIS HALPS. GOBBLES
