I was introduce to this masterpiece Misa at the age of 13th by my admired eight grade teacher who played it for us in class on a black vinyl disc many years ago. I will never forget how the music and the voices captured my heart and my mind . I am so thankful to this day for such great teacher who had the courage and the passion to introduce us (Jewish children in Israel)to this beautiful music despite of its religious content and context. Today as a teacher I try to follow her foot step and keep the legacy of pluralism , openness and freedom of learning and being exposed , to the richness of all types of art and cultures around the world .
Thanks to all for your comments. In response to comments about my dress, I would like to explain that we performed the "Misa Criolla" on a concert that featured music from Spain, Central and South America. It was not practical to have a different outfit for each composition/country. The Spanish dress was chosen specifically because of the representation of music from Spain; I danced for the grand finale and needed a Spanish outfit for that. UA-cam unfortunately cannot fully capture the context.
Gracias
Great piece! Love the Spanish from Argentina Miss Criolla = Meesa Creeosja I was introduced to this piece 15 years ago as a Soprano 1 with Stony Broook Chorale under Dr. Timothy Mount. My. All time favorite chorale piece!!
Wonderful performance. It brought me back to my childhood when, I was to see Ariel Ramirez' Misa but I had the flu and could not go. Naturally I was upset. The following week, when I was feeling much better, my parents had invited a dear friend and one of his close friends as well for dinner. That close friend of our friend was none other than Ariel Ramirez! After dinner, he came to the bedroom (that happened to have a piano in it) where I was recovering. And he played all of his Misa for me. An unforgettable night!
From my point of view as a Music student, "MISA CRIOLLA", composed by Ariel RAMÍREZ (1921-2010), is one of the best Latin American religious compositions for Soloists, Choir and chamber orchestra of 2nd half of XX century.Congratulations for University of California Los Angeles Choirs, conducted by Rebecca Lord.
As an argentinian is a real privilege to hear such a wonderful performance... Congratulations to you all... You had been able to capture with grace and talent, Ariel Ramirez intention, when he composed this work of art... Greetings from Argentina...
Congratulations, Rebbeca! As an argentinian, I can tell you captured the spirit of this wonderful folkloric-religious piece created by our genius Ariel Ramírez. Thank you!
From Tucumán, Argentina: Felicitaciones!
It is very exciting to listen to foreigners interpret a work so difficult and so full of profound values for Argentina as a Catholic country and in turn ethnic, Aboriginal, composed by masters of Argentine folklore. Congratulations to everyone and their Director for this interpretation, which must have taken a hard work and for the love they put in carrying it out !!!!
Excelent work with the choir and the solist, it is strange much the bombo legüero, irreplaceable.....very good orchestral, choir conducting
Beautiful performance of a beautiful composition. The first time I ever heard the choir's voices in the "Kyrie" (years ago, on the radio) it nearly brought tears to me eyes and I welled up listening to this, too.
Congratulations. I 've watched it for a lot of times. Rebecca, you are great! But also, all the members of the choir and the orchestra gave a wonderful performance!
Is valid this performance , but I suggest in a future presentation, included charango and bombo the principals intruments of this kind of music ,argentinian folklore
Congratulations on the excellent interpretation of Misa Criolla composed by Ariel Ramirez. The music is a master piece of a country I have always admired as a brasilian neighbor: Argentina.
Rebecca estimated Congratulations for this great work. From Uruguay wish you success in this passion. Uruguay is a country Argentina brother with the same culture and folklore. Our great admiration for the master Ariel Ramirez and your effort to respect what he wanted to express in this great Misa Criolla, thrill me to the depths of my soul. I wish you an excellent year 2013.
Regarding the Spanish dress: I was a member of the choir and, if I recall correctly, there was indeed a Spanish-themed piece of music that preceded Misa Criolla, so that's why the conductor is wearing a Spanish dress. All of the music that was performed on this day had the Spanish language.
It is such magnificent and - thank to God - of international quality. I am quite happy that it not only argentinian.... Gracias Ariel Amirez...
Thanks to all for watching this video and taking the time to comment. There seem to be numerous comments about my dress, which is amusing. My dress is indeed Spanish in nature rather than Argentinian, although it is actually a dance costume, not a true Spanish dress. The reason for the dress choice was that the Misa Criolla was programmed on a concert that featured music in the Spanish language from around the world. There was music from a variety of Spanish speaking countries, including both Argentina and Spain. I danced for one of the pieces from Spain, and I had to choose a costume that would work for that. I would have loved performing the Misa Criolla in an Argentinian dress, and perhaps will have the opportunity to do so in the future, but for this concert it was not practically possible to have a different dress for each musical selection as we traveled around the world.
Rebecca Lord Rebecca: your version is the one I prefer. How could I get the recording? I live in France and I want it for my daughter's wedding! And those who call your dress "spanish" have never seen a spanish dress in their life! It is beautiful.
Hi Rebecca, first of all, as Argentinian, thanks so much for making the effort to conduct our "Misa Criolla". Yes indeed, your dress had nothing to do with such piece of music, but anyway, that is not the main issue. You know, all music pieces can be performed in the way that the performer feels . So it is absolutely valid a performance different from the ones of the local (argentinean) chorus and orchestras. The only suggestion for future and new presentations, is to add the "charango" (little guitar used in the north/northwest of Argentina and Bolivia) and the "Bombo" (percussion instrument). Finally, if you want to know Argentinean Folk Music, let me give you an advice: visit the Province of Salta, one of the most beautiful of the Country. There are good Hotels and Resorts, available to receive international tourism. You can visit the city of Cafayate, and taste the most exquisite red and white wines. All these cities and towns have Restaurants with folk-music shows (called "peñas"), where you will find a wide expressions of all this kind of music. Thanks again!
Rebecca, Proud to be Argentinian and hear you all in this interpretation. Congrats. Ariel Ramirez, Guastavino and Ginastera are three excellent Argentinian composers of folklore. My favourites. I understand it is impossible to get a charango in England.
Hola Rebecca this version of Misa Criolla is fantastic congratulation. I was a member of a choir back in Peru we sung these beautiful songs. Great experience, by the way your dress is fabulous.
A challenging masterpiece that now belongs to the world culture. You guys have moved me to tears. Thanks so much for this wonderful performance. Way to go!... Warm greetings from Rosario, in the Argentine Pampas... 😊
Being from Argentina, I was impressed by the rendering and spirit of the performance. Kudos to you all! Since we are in the age of telling it like it is, I was a tad distracted by the hollow sound of the drums. A "bombo" has a much warmer and rich sound, plus other percussive options, than those dinky things you used. I was still happy to hear such a wonderful version. I thought the "Frida Kahlo meets Sevilla" costume was fabulous!
Oh, this is one of the best versions of Missa Criolla. I've been listening this on and on. What a extraordinary performance! I love the drums, and of course the dress of Rebecca.
Hermosa y talentosa la Directora. Felicitaciones. Thanks to all the players of that great performance, and for the young and gorgeus director a big hug and a kiss from a latinamerican fan.
Thank you Rebecca. Most people associate Mercedes Sosa with the Misa Criolla but in fact Ariel Ramirez wrote it for a male singer. Good to know that it keeps getting recognition in the classical music world outside of Argentina. This is how true masterpieces last for a long time, by being performed outside of their country of origin in institutions of higher learning such as UCLA.
Great job, Rebecca!!!! I´m myself argentinian and practising catholic, your music is helping me to cope with the stress related to medical residences exam, is sad that our country is known nowadays because of corruption and being a "failed state", and an exporter of football players and girls with such an impressive beauty but with a dubious reputation....Outside and inside Argentina, very little people actually know that this country contributes to the world with 2 Nobel prizes of Medicine and 1 of Chemistry (but medicine related).... Recently in a northern province here, a pediatrician almost die because of being working 7-8 days without rest and sleep, just because corruption in the governing body of the hospital (a political-appointed position). Nothing but taking the cross and going ahead in the life and you help in excess with that, your music is a blessing....
Wonderful. Congratulations chorus director. That its culture so different adopt the Latin culture, making it see and feel so natural and even more to praise our God, is worth admiring. The instruments or costumes used by you or your artists are not important. truly important is his professionalism, that of his choir and that of his musicians. How nice it feels to hear or see you dance while directing. The rest is secondary. Many thanks and blessings. With affection from Colombia.
Thank you for your comment, and for watching! As I have previously mentioned, we performed the "Misa Criolla" on a concert that featured music from Spain, Central, and South America. It was not practical to have a different outfit for each composition/country. The Spanish dress was chosen specifically because of the representation of music from Spain; I danced for the grand finale and needed a Spanish outfit for that.
Congratulations Rebecca! I love Misa Criolla and I believe this is a truly wonderful interpretation of it. Very classy, very elegant, most enjoyable! Warm regards from Chile.
Dear Rebecca, It was a really good job. When I first heard this missa, it was prohibited to listen in my country but I was loved it very much. Your singers and choir are really very good. Sorry for my English Best wishes all of you from Hungary ( Central-Europe ) Zsuzsa ( Susan )
Dear Rebecca, million thanks for sharing this recording! I'm a Hungarian-born Canadian who grew up with music and spent many years in different choirs. To me, this performance seems to be prepared meticulously, the choir and the instrumental musicians knew their parts very well. Your conducting was brilliant and your style fantastic! I loved it from start to finish. I have a comment on the beautiful dress you wore there: you shouldn't really apologize wearing a Spanish dress on an Argentinian-Criollo music. I have an analogy: If there's a concert with Brahms Hungarian Dances and Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsodies on the programme, probably no one would mind the conductor wearing a Hungarian dress. But the truth is, and as a musician you know it: none of the mentioned pieces are Hungarian music! Thank you again and please do not stop conducting!
An incredible choir! We're performing misa criolla this Christmas, so I can judge a little bit. This choir is absolutely great with a super conductress!! Great performance!
Felicitaciones Rebecca!! Felicitaciones.
Fantastic, I´ve been in the UCLA and heard another musics. Congratulations, specially to Rebecca. The Choir didn't has english accent, sure very difficult for them. It was a challenge but Rebecca could obtain the best, the top.
I don't know what they said about your dress, but in my humble opinion, you look SMASHING! Very well done, to you, Dr. Lord, and to the entire ensemble.
The Congratulations! To get the essence of the Misa, and give the Intonation Force, being a language that is not their own, is a work of Sensitivity . Thank you.
As an Argentinian, I felt happy and proud to hear a different version of the Misa Criolla, Joshua Guerrero is spectacular and someone to follow, and the choir sensational. Overall, sweet! I congratulate Ms. Lord for bringing this version to life; however, two notes: 1) Next time, please dress appropriately, this is not flamenco and 2) the musical arrangement was closer to the Mambo Kings than Argentinan folklore; Ricky Ricardo did not write the musical score.
Alberto Tcah You're right that Ricky Ricardo did not write the score: Ariel Ramirez did. As a concert work, pretty much everything is written out, including the full percussion. But excluding the flute / panpipes.
The Congratulations! To get the essence of the Mass, and give the Intonation Force, being a language that is not their own, is a work of Sensitivity . Thank you.
Si intento escuchar esta canciones es honor de darle gracias a DIOS EN NOMBRE DE NUESTRO SALVADOR JESUSCRISTO PARA EL MUNDO ENTERO .

Good performance. I enjoyed it. Congratulations to Ms. Lord and UCLA for this awesome isa criolla. Since Honduras.

Muchas felicidades Ariel!
Listened to this fantastic performance more than a couple of times, and always always delighted to hear it again.
Dear Rebecca,
It was a really good job. When I first heard this missa, it was prohibited to listen in my country but I was loved it very much. Your singers and choir are really very good. Sorry for my English
Best wishes all of you from Hungary ( Central-Europe )
Zsuzsa ( Susan )
Congratulation for this interpretation. Choir is exellent. Kind regards from Serbia.
Thanks Rebecca, to interpret my country music so magically.
+Laszlo Berenyi Thank you, Laszlo, for your kind comments!
Hermoso!! Gracias!! Congratulations from Argentina!
Coral espetacular. Adorei!
Hi Rebecca!
Congratulations on the magnificent work!
I'm a huge fan of Ariel Ramirez's work.
Orgullo Argentinoo!!
Thank you it is fantastic to hear such a great orchestra and choir.. I was totaly into tears..xx
05:01 Beautiful scene :) The dress and temperament/style of the conductor make this recording even more fun to watch! The gloria is my favorite :)
The Congratulations! To get the essence of the Misa, and give the Intonation Force, being a language that is not their own, is a work of Sensitivity
To get the essence of the Mass, and give the Intonation Force, being a language that is not their own, is a work of Sensitivity
. Thank you.
