My youngest son went to parris Island for boot camp. I definitely saw a change in him when I went up for his graduation. I'm incredibly proud of him and all who have honorably served. Ooh rah from the father of a Marine.
Took my younger brother to see this movie in 1988 right after I got out of basic training while I was still in college. To this day, when ever we get together {he lives in another city} we will watch this movie together
I still have my paperback copy of the novel. It's a fairly faithful adaptation but he shuffles around some of the events which makes it a little confusing for someone familiar with the film. Thankfully they decided not t use a scene where the head of the sniper is used as a soccer ball. It was filmed but never made it into the fact and regarded as being too excessive. I highly recommend reading Full Metal Jacket Diary by Matthew Modine.
It's unfortunate that Kubrick never made his Aryan Papers film about the holocaust. Even if it was considered too close in subject to the Spielberg film it was from a completely different perspective. I have never seen the Spielberg film but I loathe him as a director, but Kubrick's take on this horrible subject would have been interesting, albeit a deeply depressing experience-probably his most depressing film. I read the novel many years ago and didn't see much to it or why he chose this particular novel to adapt, but he would have added a great deal of detail not found in the novel, and would have done an exhaustive amount of research. When he abandoned the project his wife was actually relieved , seeing it as a subject that was going to very difficult to turn into a film. He seemed to enjoy the subject of war and it factors in many of his films, although not as realistically as Full Metal Jacket. He stated that he wanted to make a war film that had no political angle and just showed the nuts and bolts of what it was like to be a grunt just trying to survive. The film still has its fair amount of satire, especially the very stylised language used by the soldiers. One could even compare it to the slang used in A Clockwork Orange by the droogies. It's a form of communication that was designed to set them apart from outsiders.
If by the 'the Spielberg film' you mean Schindler Lists then your making a mistake not watching it. It's a masterpiece and you can even really compare it Spielberg's other movies in terms of style or tone.
