Stunning. Stoke's voice is both soft and strong, warm and powerful, simply amazing. I had tears in my eyes by the time he'd finished. That hasn't happened in a long time.
A very special, one-of-a-kind man who comes along maybe once in a generation. Presence, bearing, talent, warmth, strength, class, beauty, all in one person. Thank you Brian and God for this.
For over 50 years this amazing and inspiring song has been so important to me . For most of those years it was Richard Kiley , the original star on Broadway that captured my heart and stayed with me . Tonight, on UA-cam , I saw Brian Stokes Mitchell sing it . It floored me with its grace , power and beauty . He's the very best at it . Now I've got to check out much more of his enormous talent thru song. George Lewis, Sr
I have felt the same way about this song. I remember when Jim Nabors sang it as Gomer Pyle on TV and I also so it on TV from Richard Kiley in the 1960's. I've watched it lately with Elvis, Sinatra, Williams and a few others. It just doesn't seem to lose anything as many times as I see it. I also watch Susan Boyle audition, I dreamed a dream. The reaction on peoples faces tells the story.
The Key of Brian Stokes Mitchell singing this song, I think, is due to his own lifetime experience, like soldier in Vietnam. He is showing his Soul and Emotions like nobody did before, under extreme circumstances.
I agree. Up until now, I had known and loved Richard Kiley's version, having grown up hearing the soundtrack belonging to my parents. I knew Brian Stokes Mitchell had starred in a revival of this but had never seen or heard him perform it. This is stunning.
I was 15 when I heard him sing this for the first time and I think that's when I truly understood how a song can move someone to tears by the end. I had seen musicals and such, but there is no comparison to the vocal range and richness of his voice and his performance choices. No other version has come close to moving me to tears as his version does. Truly a brilliant artist and a treasure.
Brian is so fantastic! I saw him perform in Dallas and it was awesome. If he had been born a few generations later, with his good looks and talent, he would have been a movie star.
Starts out sounding a little weary and it made me wonder if it was a throw-away interpretation. But then he takes you on his journey and finishes it strong and true. A virtuoso theater performance.
If you like Brian, checkout him singing Through Heavens Eyes from The Prince of Egypt with an Orchestra. I'll let the video speak for itself! Watch it with a good sound system if you can...
@@roder51 Once I read your comment I went to see Richard Kiley's performance, and I still like Stokes better than him. He puts such emotion behind his words, everything in his performance is so perfected and polished. Kiley on the other hand, seems to focus more on nice vocals.
I have never heard THE IMPOSSIBLE DREAM performed like that. Pausing, looking at her, singing lines softly, trying to make her understand. That is a way to make a powerful song seem personal and intimate between two people. How I love Brian Stokes Mitchell.
A record I treasure that is played with the fullness of JOY... yes, each word in alignment with the speaking of heart and the beckoning of soul in purpose defined. YES, a destiny shared... a quest ever present,,, it is the very breath of BEING. BRAVO!!
No one sings this song like Brian Stokes Mitchell. I’ve never really been a huge fan of the song but his impeccable renditions of it have made me a convert. What a gift to have a voice like his. And what a gift to be able to hear it.
We have one and if you really listen to the words you might realize who it is. He's not crazy or insane or anything else that the media might want to tag on him...he is fighting to save this Constitutional Republic...and so are the people who back him

My wife and I saw an excellent local community theater performance of "Man of La Mancha" last night. This play is beautifully and cleverly crafted, and the music and message are uplifting. I really enjoyed this performance -- thank you for posting.
such a beautiful and brilliant performance by a magnificent actor/singer. Stokes (as we used to call him) draws up in and weaves a tale of majestic magnitude simply by making sense of what he was singing about and really taking the time to build this song with ups and downs. There was only one wish if I could have made (and Richard Kiley fell into the same trap) the last note should have been a third or a fifth higher. the last note was too comfortably placed in both performers ranges and something a little higher would have turned a good solid ending into a Powerhouse Finale Note the way someone like Judy Garland would tap into to transform the song with an unbelievable amazing ending.
Picture it... the 1972 Tony Awards, Brian Stokes Mitchell introduces Richard Kiley, who sings "The Impossible Dream". Picture it, again... the 2003 Tony Awards, & Brian Stokes Mitchell sings "The Impossible Dream". This is 'your dream', Mr. Stokes Mitchell. Bravo, Sir, Bravo.
I’m doing this show at my high school this spring and I am super excited to be doing a show so powerful, emotional, and perfect. This performance was fantastic and I can’t wait to see how our Don Quixote does with it. I’m going for Sancho!! Wish me luck. Auditions are in about 3 weeks

What an amazing talent. Perhaps he took his role on the 8 year run of "Trapper John MD" to fund his future? And WOW, what a super talent!!! He outshines the original -Richard Kiley, Robert Goulet, David Canary... I'd have paid a grand X2 to see this full production. Too bad, it was never fully recorded. Thank you for this snippet.

This song speaks of the mission of Christ - but it was not hopeless. He succeeded and was true to his quest and we can all be peaceful and calm when we are laid to our rest if we believe in his work of paying for our sins.
I missed that reading. But only because the text explicitly calls Don Quixote a madman. So the text's ambivalent attitude towards the "hero" made me miss it. I would say that is plausible albeit strained an interpretation.
Damned if I didn't just burst into tears watching this just now. Well into my 60s now and I wore my old man's copy of the original cast album out. In all honesty I can't think of a superlative adequate enough to do justice to Brian Stokes-Mitchell's voice.
