The electric guitar is only a plank, a pickup or two, and six strings, but consider the differences in the sounds people like Howe, Fripp, Belew, Holdsworth, Watanabe and Torn get out of it. The bass has even fewer strings, but Squire, Berlin, Gomez, Harries, Wetton, Hodgson and Levin all approach the instrument hearing it done differently to the other guy. When these people play, it is a measure of their creativity that the part they contribute becomes instantly a defining factor of the composition such that you can hardly imagine the piece of music without it. Elephant Talk without Belew’s elephantine wailings? Fracture without Fripp’s moto perpetuo? Roundabout without Squire’s bass clanking along? Red without Wetton’s thunderous bottom end? I don’t think so.
This set of choices is what the musician brings to the table, and constitutes his or her musical identity. It’s what gets you hired if you’re in a band that wants you to express that identity. You might, of course, be working for a leader or in a band or ensemble who wants the opposite - that you sublimate it. Nothing wrong with that, but just best to know what’s wanted. Sometimes there’s guesswork involved. Try King Crimson, for example.
Britain’s ‘UK’ generally wanted scoops of identity; after all, expressing the country’s identity is a national pastime. So too with the band. This video is from a drum workshop / demonstration in Paris. The music was written by violinist Eddie Jobson, fresh from working with Frank Zappa, and you can hear how the composition twists and turns in a manner similar to Zappa.
These sort of karaoke demonstrations were never my favourite sort of public appearance, but sometimes you take the rough with the smooth. The only UK album I was on - the eponymous first one - was a great success that we all could sign up to, even guitarist Allan Holdsworth, the other notoriously difficult-to-please guitarist with whom I shared many dressing rooms.

I love the calm, the peace with which he plays. He is utterly in control of the sounds we chooses to produce. Amazing.
There were great drummers when the “prog” movement started. Mr. Bruford had different influences, sound, approach to drumming, and technique. The greatest part was we could tell he was the one drumming because of all these factors. Who else has had a sound like his? Then and now? Timeless and still unique.
I wish Bill had done some of the U.K. Reunion shows with Eddie Jobson & John Wetton, Bill sounds amazing here, lots of energy.
Unfortunately, John Weaton died.

I think UK was an effort by Wetton and Bruford to keep the King Crimson vibe going. They picked a guitar player who didn’t fit the Fripp mold. Ultimately, Bruford got that groove back by joining 2 subsequent lineups of KC.
Really looking forward to this video. Probably the greatest prog rock supergroup ever assembled. Such a shame this line up didn't produce more albums together.
Saw them in Santa Monica, CA in '78 with Holdsworth still on guitar. Maybe the single greatest prog concert I ever witnessed. GOSH they were good live!
This album will always be one of my favorites.
Muchas gracias.

righty, lefty, crossed, open, matched or orthodox; no matter - centre hat!! ✌🥁👍
great musician, great music, thank you!! ✌😎👍
For me the best album ever made in musichistory.
Oh man those were the days…so much great music coming at us from every direction!! We (my friends and music buddies) had no idea how fortunate we were and thought it would last forever.
I’m guessing this is from a drum clinic. Mr. Bruford you’re the man no matter how it’s presented. Thank you…
**We (my friends and music buddies) had no idea how fortunate we were and thought it would last forever.** - Exactly this ! ...I'm still in shock that it ended. I think I will continue to be.. until the end
Well said
@@jimjosemusic5325 Yep. UK, Yes, ELP, Crimson, Gentle Giant, Tull, Genesis, PFM, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever, Weather Report...and you could see ALL of them in one year. Oh, for a time machine...
Love the guy!
WOW!!! BILL, YOU´RE THE BEST DRUMMER IN THE WORLD!!!
no one hits the snare like mr. bruford. yes was never the same after him.
We miss you, Bill!
Amazing
C’est magnifique ❤
And a monster Yamaha CS-80 banging out those stacatto notes, too. This is the Reprise of In the Dead of Night. Well done.
My word, full appreciation of the percussive music here. Absolutely phenomenal Thanks Bill!
Pure fire.
en espera con ansiedad..!!
Amazing.Thanks from Brasil.
BILL YOU RULE!
UK self titled album is very underrated, Nevermore, Mental Medication and Thirty Years is my favorite of the 5 tracks but they are all masterpieces.
Bravo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I saw this live at The Chance in Poughkeepsie, NY. I have your drumsticks from that show!
This Great musician got me thru great times in my youth all the way back to yes days including his solo projects with the great Alan Holdsworth & immortal singer Mr Wetton thank you🙏🏼
Bass player Mr Wetton…. JW was a bass player who sang, not the other way around.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Great stuff, a pity the audience-taped audio is so overloaded.
Maestro William Bruford 🎼🥁🎼
still love your work!!
An interesting performance on Bill’s late Earthworks’ drum kit - remote hi-hat in the center, toms arranged flat on both sides of the snare in non-descending order.
A completely different style of kit than he was playing c1978. I wonder if that presented any challenges to this performance.
天才
This is gooooold! Thank you master!!! =D
UK changed my whole understanding of music
That’s the way it’s supposed to go, folks.
Great video.
"The best part of a great song is the intro. The best part of a bad song is the ending." td
In a better alternate reality, the early UK would've been a global smash success, rendering Asia unnecessary. Incidentally, there's a decent-quality recording of UK live (Boston 1978), where Bill is heard playing on "Carrying No Cross" and "Caesar's Palace Blues".
Parece un bombo de 24
🤘🤘🤘
Billy B!
Terry bozzio doing this live with those big rotos is also a thing of beauty. Question, why does bill always have such terrible audio. For god sakes, do these bits with at home for us, you have a rich catalog for us.
In The Dead Of Night
Nice to see Bill miss s few hits and struggle to get back on beat…he is human after-all😅
Bill is one of the greatest (and one of my favorite) drummers in the world, but WHOA. The sound quality with all that cell phone compression is...well, I'm just surprised he put this out. Mind you, it's great to have ANYTHING with Bill playing the UK repertoire, but it's just a shame it couldn't have sounded better. Still rather have it than not, so I'll shut up.
I wonder how he got his hands on a rather poor bootleg?
As great as it is to see this performed again, this more straight-ahead (but also very dynamic) version lacks some of the push and pull and tension created by the original performance on record.
Needed decent EQ
The compression pumping sounds terrible. It's probably multiple generations of compression that destroyed the recording.
Eeeuuww, I much prefer Terry Bozzio's tenure on the UK drums. Bill doesn't do it for me here.
The drum is so poorly miked up - makes him sound like an amateur.
That’s one thing Bruford will never sound like.
@@blueabattoir He will never play like an amateur but the sound is amatuerish
Amateurs like Bruford who needs pros but your right he shouldn’t release this stuff . Doesn’t do him justice
@@jefflevinson669 He's nothing to prove after his career.
That was terribly phrased . He is bar done my favourite drummer has been since the 70s but for one that might not be familiar with he would be more impressed with a better mix
