I grew up with REO and took guitar lessons from the guitarist who started the band, Bob Crownover. I have met them all. True Gary was an excellent player and no guitarist could fill his shoes, but Neal retired to spend more time with family and grandchildren. I don't know about Kevin kicking Bruce out. I saw the last year and Bruce played with them. Bruce does a lot of charity work in our home town. Kevin can still sing. All rock stars are narcissist. I am a nobody school teacher and he still spoke to me at a bar where he sat in with a local band.We were outside smoking a cigarette. He is not that bad.
I watched the five minute speech Dave from Kevin at last night‘s final REO Speedwagon show according to Kevin. Can you say self loving narcissist he barely mentioned Bruce Hall and that was on purpose. He invited everyone at the end of the speech to come out and see “Kevin Cronin band“ only problem the January 25 show was canceled due to low ticket sales. He said it was because he’s giving the band a chance to rest. That’s a BS Lie. If the band last show is on 21 December or so. There will be plenty of time to rest until January 25. This guy‘s ego is bigger than route Rushmore. He’s not even close to being a caliber singer and entertainer of a Steve PerryPhil Collins Peter Frampton. But he thinks he has the draw of a Mick Jagger or Paul McCartney that Kevin Cronin. According to the podcast, Bruce Hall said he got really really nasty emails from Kevin this year.
Bruce should’ve saw this coming from 1,000,000 miles away. How could he have witnessed what happened to Gary and not automatically assumed that the same would happen to him when the time was right? Bruce is no longer the big buck he was for many years, He yes his back is bent over a little bit, and he’s not standing up so quite so big and tall ,so our hero, Kevin automatically knew it was time to put him in the recycle bin. I saw Tommy open for the Kinks at the Rockford Metro Center , he was in a short lived project called "Girls with Guns". Pretty forgettable to be honest.
Ive heard part of the REO Classics from Lutrell..its not bad...there is a rumor going around that Lutrell,Neal,Alan Gratzer,and Mike Murphy(late 72 to early 76),Gary Richraths son on guitar and Steve Scorina(OG memeber long ago)...I would go see this just because of the history of that.
No need to bring in Mike Murphy. He was never a real fix for their problems. He subbed in till they got KC back. I would definitely go see REO with Neal, Alan, Terry, Bruce and the guitarist currently playing with Terry. Terry's vocals are amazing. I don't know about his durability but he's sure got it on the classics album.
I actually saw REO at a county fair in Michigan back in 1994, it was the start of their 'come back' trail, after the dark days of the late 80's and early 90's. I have to say, they were good. The band was tight, Kevin was still pretty young and could hit every note, the venue was HUGE and it was packed and the band seemed to react to that and really put on a show. IMO, that was sort of the high point for a lot of that 'post Richrath' stuff. Today, there are NO original members in that band, it's just some oldies tour and Kevin looks like someone's grandmother trying to dress like she's 19.
It is what it is I'd argue Styx isn't Styx without Dennis d young people get old and don't sound the same. Personally, I think Kevin Cronin should retire. I like Megadeth and Dokken, but I wouldn't pay to see them today even though I have [yes I'm old school their CD'S] To say Kevin Cronin broke up the band is kind of ridiculous the band hasn't been REO for many years. Styx is like what hit did they have after Kilroy was here? Reo like hasn't had anything since the early 90s. Most bands reunite for a reunion tour because they're broke.
Richrath was booted out of Reo back in the late 80s and Reo was still around for at least 30 years so i'd say they did very well don't get me Gary Richrath was still my favorite member of Reo. but they did very well with out him

Another consideration, and this is pure speculation on my part, is that KCB may not be allowed to perform the complete set list of songs that they typically do. If the other songwriters involved have blocked songs that Kevin did not write or co-write, KCB may be forced to replace 30 to 40 percent of their set list. With the holidays factored in, they likely needed more time to work up 8 or 9 tunes and have time to rehearse them together, and they might not have had time to do all of that within a month and be ready for the show.
The last REO album I bought was Hi Infidelity in 1981.The band's musical direction changed into pop ballad garbage & long time fans such as myself stayed away in large numbers.They were terrible,KC has a huge ego,the entire band suffered through his arrogant bullshit.Which only got worse as the years went by.Gary was a HUGE part of the band,not just his excellent guitar playing either. I think its hilarious,KC deserves getting dumped on for his past behavior. To go from selling millions of records,playing huge stadiums being reduced to playing much smaller venues such as State Fairs & similar places while not even getting radio airplay is quite a testament to how the mighty have fallen......
That’s all part of the cycle. The hit records eventually go away and new artists come in to fill the void. Bands aren’t meant to last forever - and this one ran its course.
Huge fan going back to 77. Lost count of how many times I've seen them from 78-88. But once Gary left, that was the end. It was those 5 guys together. Also can't underestimate their secret weapon, neals keyboard playing. Cronin has over estimated his importance.

My college band, Feathertrain, needed to replace our original bass player and we somehow found out about this guy who was playing in a High School band in this tiny town outside of Champaign IL with a population of maybe 200 people. Geoff Poor and myself met with Bruce and his parents in their living room as Bruce was still a minor and we would be playing in clubs that served alcohol. We hired him after we got his parents' consent and he stayed with us the rest of the year. Our group, however, became so popular that Irving Azoff, our booking agent, wanted us to go from playing 4 nights a week to 6 and do more travel which I couldn't do and stay in school. So figuring "Who ever heard of a 40 year old Rock n Roll star" I announced that I was leaving the group right before finals so I could cram I was replaced by this named "Gary Ritchrath" on lead guitar, which is another story. I feel for Bruce but he had a great run.

If you do your history KC tried this solo act thing after he and Gary had a pissing match on the direction of the band in 1972-73 , KC sang on the original RIDING THE STORM OUT record, then he got left to go solo , Mike Murphy over dubbed all his vocals and was there for 3 albums KC came back in ‘76 to put out R.E.O. ( cowhide album) This is his second attempt to go solo, 2nd time in 51 years I’m not being a troll, I have followed this back since the 70’s just trying to state my own thoughts So disappointed in the whole situation 😢
Yeah they have a very interesting history. I’ve studied all their albums from Terry Luttrel to Kevin Cronin to Mike Murphy back to Kevin again. Of course Gregg Philbin on bass before Bruce Hall. Seen many of their tours. Including a mini tour with Michael Streive on drums in between Alan Gratzer leaving and Hitt starting with the band. I’d like to learn more about the pre-album days with Duke Tomatue and others I’ve seen little clips about. And I hate to see it end this way too!

I saw REO five times, all during the Richrath years. Best live band ever. I've seen many clips over the last few years and it's sad to see what to the band. Kevin lost his voice and while Amato is good, he can't fill Gary's shoes. Gary's guitar work on "Back On The Again" is to me, the greatest ever recorded!
Should have perhaps left well enough alone, while Bruce is showing signs of decline, Styx still had their founding member play with them in his decline…..sad for all fans!
You had on exactly what I was thinking the second that I saw this video. He does not have any name recognition. The crowd that would see him is aging out and probably already saw REO Speedwagon 10 times. He doesn’t have any following with younger people, so it’s a tough one. The thing is, they have always toured with other acts. Being the underwriter to STYX is not a bad thing… I just think that he falls into that category where you almost have to team up with other acts and make it a 80s reunion sort of thing. Now I don’t know what the issue is with the REO Speedwagon name as I have not paid any attention. Please fill me in and let me know. Because if they are going to find a new singer and go out together, then I will contact some of my people and try out for the band.

I, as a huge REO fan, am completely fed up with Cronin. But I've been fed up since Gary left, so..... I would be interested in seeing Terry lead again, though.
One concert being cancelled is nothing and other artists have canceled shows at the last minute due to unforeseen circumstances. If the whole tour was canceled then that would have been news. Please do a follow up as to why it was canceled once that information is released.
Some legacy artists aren't worth my time. Music has never been about the singer alone, yet these singers think they were the draw. For me, that is almost never true. I tolerate some singers so I can hear the rest of the band. I never got excited about Kevin in the first place, so going to see him is laughable.
Sincere question, why do you suppose 73 yr old Kevin Cronin would still be out there touring and not just touring but at these little rinky-dink venues at this point? Did I miss something? Is he not at least a millionaire if not multimillionaire? Dude had a 50 year successful career in the music industry back when it paid. I just don’t get it. Don’t get me wrong he’s free to do what he wants and I wish him all the success in the world but I just find it curious.
Paul McCartney is still out there touring, and he’s in his 80’s now. So is Ringo Starr, for that matter. Neither of them HAVE to tour, but they still do tours and albums.
It gets In You. You just want to play live Look at David Crosby and other perfect example before he died. He was out touring everywhere for months at a time. No they weren't very big venues but he enjoyed what he did. Jackson Browne has been doing that quite a bit now too smaller venues but he still loves to get out there and play.
For many of these artists, show business is all they know and they will get bored without the energy of an audience. I'm referring to the artists who don't need the money. For those who do, the reason is obvious why they tour. These artists basically just love what they do, and this is aside from the varying egos.
Dave, do you think they could recruit Dennis De Young? He could do a good job with REO songs. And then of course STYX songs it could be a very good new version of the band with Dennis as the lead singer.
Dave Amato replaced Gary Richrath almost 35 years ago. He is as underrated as Gary as a guitar player. You should read up on Dave and give a little credit to him. He also sings much better than KC.
A few of my friends met Kevin & they took pics etc with him . They said he was a great guy & real nice . Saw REO in Concert about 7 years ago & he talked way too much between songs etc . Richrath was a totally legit & a great Rock Guitarist, but sadly an alcoholic, but I don’t blame REO for cutting him loose due to alcohol abuse.
Excellent concerts in the OMNI ATLANTA GA REO and Journey And in a place with 30.000 seats or so I use to get lucky and some school friends would be sitting right next to me or within a couple of rows and it happened in the FOX THATRE as well but ROCK that was close to METAL

Cronin's touring days are over. There is huge backlash over him SCREWING his REO bandmates.

I've seen many clips over the last few years and it's sad to see what to the band. Kevin lost his voice and while Amato is good, he can't fill Gary's shoes.
Gary's guitar work on "Back On The Again" is to me, the greatest ever recorded!
Should have perhaps left well enough alone, while Bruce is showing signs of decline, Styx still had their founding member play with them in his decline…..sad for all fans!

You had on exactly what I was thinking the second that I saw this video. He does not have any name recognition. The crowd that would see him is aging out and probably already saw REO Speedwagon 10 times. He doesn’t have any following with younger people, so it’s a tough one. The thing is, they have always toured with other acts. Being the underwriter to STYX is not a bad thing… I just think that he falls into that category where you almost have to team up with other acts and make it a 80s reunion sort of thing.
Now I don’t know what the issue is with the REO Speedwagon name as I have not paid any attention. Please fill me in and let me know. Because if they are going to find a new singer and go out together, then I will contact some of my people and try out for the band.
KC's finally giving real value back. Keep refunding those tickets and cancelling shows.

I, as a huge REO fan, am completely fed up with Cronin. But I've been fed up since Gary left, so..... I would be interested in seeing Terry lead again, though.

One concert being cancelled is nothing and other artists have canceled shows at the last minute due to unforeseen circumstances. If the whole tour was canceled then that would have been news. Please do a follow up as to why it was canceled once that information is released.

As far as KC with Styx is no problem, people want to see STYX with a new album coming out. KC on his own, i'll stay quiet.
Some legacy artists aren't worth my time. Music has never been about the singer alone, yet these singers think they were the draw. For me, that is almost never true. I tolerate some singers so I can hear the rest of the band. I never got excited about Kevin in the first place, so going to see him is laughable.

Sincere question, why do you suppose 73 yr old Kevin Cronin would still be out there touring and not just touring but at these little rinky-dink venues at this point? Did I miss something? Is he not at least a millionaire if not multimillionaire? Dude had a 50 year successful career in the music industry back when it paid. I just don’t get it. Don’t get me wrong he’s free to do what he wants and I wish him all the success in the world but I just find it curious.
Paul McCartney is still out there touring, and he’s in his 80’s now. So is Ringo Starr, for that matter. Neither of them HAVE to tour, but they still do tours and albums.

Look at David Crosby and other perfect example before he died.
He was out touring everywhere for months at a time. No they weren't very big venues but he enjoyed what he did.
Jackson Browne has been doing that quite a bit now too smaller venues but he still loves to get out there and play.
For many of these artists, show business is all they know and they will get bored without the energy of an audience. I'm referring to the artists who don't need the money. For those who do, the reason is obvious why they tour. These artists basically just love what they do, and this is aside from the varying egos.

Dave Amato replaced Gary Richrath almost 35 years ago. He is as underrated as Gary as a guitar player. You should read up on Dave and give a little credit to him. He also sings much better than KC.

A few of my friends met Kevin & they took pics etc with him . They said he was a great guy & real nice .
Saw REO in Concert about 7 years ago & he talked way too much between songs etc .
Richrath was a totally legit & a great Rock Guitarist, but sadly an alcoholic, but I don’t blame REO for cutting him loose due to alcohol abuse.

Excellent concerts in the OMNI ATLANTA GA REO and Journey And in a place with 30.000 seats or so I use to get lucky and some school friends would be sitting right next to me or within a couple of rows and it happened in the FOX THATRE as well but ROCK that was close to METAL
I watched the five minute speech Dave from Kevin at last night‘s final REO Speedwagon show according to Kevin. Can you say self loving narcissist he barely mentioned Bruce Hall and that was on purpose. He invited everyone at the end of the speech to come out and see “Kevin Cronin band“ only problem the January 25 show was canceled due to low ticket sales. He said it was because he’s giving the band a chance to rest. That’s a BS Lie. If the band last show is on 21 December or so. There will be plenty of time to rest until January 25. This guy‘s ego is bigger than route Rushmore. He’s not even close to being a caliber singer and entertainer of a Steve PerryPhil Collins Peter Frampton. But he thinks he has the draw of a Mick Jagger or Paul McCartney that Kevin Cronin. According to the podcast, Bruce Hall said he got really really nasty emails from Kevin this year.
