    The mower and I!
    I helped with replacing all these parts. I remember using a brace and bit for drilling holes in the tongue. They had to be right on target. Guard s, teeth, allof it. We had a blacksmith in Brunswick, Mo.. So handy when making repairs. When I was smaller, I would actually ride on the tongue, my back against the mower seat. I knew exactly what you were talking about your mower videos. Enjoying your videos,l rodee the tongue long enough to get to the field. Also the rubber on the pitman rod, good idea. They were noisy. I enjoyed it all. Keep up the good work.

      Also, we had rubber tires on our mower, and 2 half concrete blocks chained to seat. Took tongue weight off the horses.

    Another great video Jim.
    I don’t know how you remove the sickle sections from the bar but allow me to tell you how I do it. Using a good vice and close it so you can slide the bar through the vice, barely tight. Have your sections facing down. When a section is in the middle of the vice give the section a good swift hit with a heavy hammer. That will shear of the rivets, then slide the bar to the next section and repeat. In a matter of minutes no more sections on your bar. Then your ready to install the new sections. Sine they came out with the screws I really like them better than the rivets. I used to punch the rivets out until an old timer showed me that trick. It really works good.

    Good video, it's amazing how well a mower works when set up and tuned. A farmer I worked for would warn us guys hunting to retrieve our arrows because the aluminum not a problem but the braudheads made of hard steel really raise havick on the mower. Yes, my Brother warned me about those cutters shifting while raising and lowering the cutter arm and to use your palms and keep your fingers back, or like you do keeping your fingers on the bar side opposite the knives. Yicks....

    Those knives are shiny and sparkly! I hope you’re able to pass on your knowledge and skills and keep the old ways alive. I love seeing your farm and the beautiful blue skies. Looks like paradise.

    After the disconcerting evening news it is always reassuring to see that there is also a saner world out there, and it is on horse-powered farms like yours, Jim and Brenda. I have never sharpened serrated knives, only exchanged them, not my favorite work on the farm, though. I use a dolly wheel on my mower.

      The new mower blade is pretty. You can see it’s clearly superior quality. More of the old ways being superior in general.

    Thanks for the closeup shots. I found this knife change to be complicated. The wrong move could be disastrous. How old are these mowers? Don’t think either of them owe you anything. 🐴🐴

    I am restoring a McCormick Deering No 7 mower. I like the idea of bolt on knife sections. Do you need a special type of knife section for a Deering mower (the Deering spares I have seen only offer rivet on knife section), or will a standard combine harvester knife section work? I can get those as bolt on or rivet on?
    Do you know whether you need to have 'high arch' knife clips/hold down plates to accommodate the nuts when using bolt on knife sections?
    Do you rely on the lock nut to prevent the bolt from shaking loose, or do you add some locktite when bolting the knife sections on?
    Any advice would be much appreciated.
    Kind Regards, Dominic

    • @WorkingHorsesWithJim
      @WorkingHorsesWithJim  3 роки тому +1

      The bolts that are used on knife sections are a special bolt you have to buy. They will fit under the regular clips, I believe. And the lock nut usually holds it fine. Good luck
