Hurricane Georges - Luquillo, Puerto Rico - Sep. 21, 1998

- Hurricane Georges crossed the entire length of Puerto Rico on September 21, 1998. As the storm made landfall over the southeastern part of the island, I was able to intercept the northern eyewall in the town of Luquillo (the same location where I intercepted Hurricane Hugo nine years earlier). Although Georges had weakened significantly as it approached the Northeast Caribbean, the hurricane began to strengthen rapidly just before landfall in Puerto Rico. Georges was a Category Three with maximum sustained winds of 115mph and gusts between 130-140mph at landfall in Puerto Rico. Winds of 110mph with a peak gust of 130mph was recorded in Fajardo, very close to my location. The minimum central pressure at landfall in Puerto Rico was 968mb (28.59in).

Jim found out that he had colon cancer in early 2014. He passed away in November of 2014 at the age of 64. Jim Leonard started storm chasing Tornadoe's and Hurricanes in the early 1970s and to this day holds the record for being in more Hurricanes on the ground then any other person in history. He was also only the second person to ever start chasing Tornadoes altogether as there was only one other guy who started chasing before him and that was in the mid 1950s.
moviemagg it's
@@hectorfranco5973 David Hoadley :|
Oh damn, RIP Jim, I just left a comment, unaware of his passing, sorry!! A legendary storm chaser!! Peace!!
@@mexicanmappingtv5239 Yes, you are correct. It was David Hoadley. However keep in mind that newsmen with movie cameras who filmed many a tornado and hurricane were really the first storm chasers going as far back as the 1920s.
@@moviemagg Hey, I research a little and I found that first photographs of a tornado were during the 19th century. In fact, there's a photo of a tornado that hit Oklahoma City in 1896.
Jim Leonard. 1950-2014 R.I.P.
what happened??
+Chopzz Gaming What do you mean what happened?
How did he die??
I was the last one to see him in the hospital before he passed. He is missed by a lot of people. Too bad he's not around to experience Matthew.
This is among my favorite hurricane videos. Shows the true power of what "just a cat 3" will do. Hurricanes are powerful monsters and anyone that goes through one surely will never forget it for their entire lives. Hard to even fathom what cat 4's and cat 5's will do.
Maria was category five and that one in particular I will NEVER forget.
Nature is so Beautiful.
Wow, Jim-- I hadn't watched this footage in a while and I forgot how amazing it is. That is just some top-notch hurricane action. I have to get in one like this.
👌🏽
My first big hurricane experience!! I was 8 years living in Higuey, Dominican Rep. This hurricane was so strong and made me fell in love with hurricanes. It was a category 4 when it hit the Dominican Republic, and it changed most of the country,
Another incredible video Jim, just amazing. Palm trees are also equally amazing how they are adapted to dealing with such extreme winds!
Hi
Haven't seen this footage in awhile - but I gotta say the footage between 1:40 and 2:40 is truly the most amazing hurricane footage I have ever seen in my entire life. Looks like they underestimated George at 115mph.
I was DR when this happen too. I experience the eye too. Everything just got calm for like 5 minutes and all the sudden all hell broke lose. Man, I drank a lot of coconut water during those day lol..
El Poke 312 same omg. I was a 4yo but i remember it all so clearly
lmaoo the coconut water lol my coconut tree went down. i got pictures drinking coconut water after this hurricAne lol
puerto rico is a small island so most of the time it gets completely covered by the hurricanes like maria which is horrible
Great footage! I was 14 when Georges crossed PR and I lived in Guaynabo. We didn't see tons of damage (other than fallen trees and power lines) where I was, but I remember driving around the day after and seeing houses torn apart. We didn't have power for about 2 weeks after that and standing in line for an hour to buy a single bag of ice was not fun!
Best eyewall video I've seen Jim. Was a chaser way back and had encounters with Frederick 1979 and Allen in 1980. This was back in the super 8 video days. Caught Frederick at a welcome center at Alabama, Mississippi boarder near I-10. The worst was at night and in those days you could forget about video at night. Set up wind equipment with 102 mph gust. Manage to be in the eye with pressure at 946 MB. Was with meteorologist John Coleman of Chicago for Allen. Worked for him from 1975 to 1979.
One of my all time favorite hurricane videos Jim! Just incredible!!! I really need to chase in the deep tropics someday soon!
Absolutely Phenomenal!!! This is some of the best footage of a tropical cyclone ever shot! Those peak gusts are easily in the 135-140mph range. The sound of the shattering glass is great too. Who would have thought nine years after we intercepted Hugo, that you'd be back in the exact same spot for the sequel!!
this is one of my all time favorite hurricane shoots......love the palm action with the roof being peeled off, doesn't get much better than that!
Nice footage Jim! I love the fury of nature!!
Puerto Rico has been hit very hard these past few decades but has been sparred a direct impact since Hurricane Georges back in 98. This is a great video you are truly a proffessional what a vid better than any i've seen on the internet.
Very powerful cat.3 hurricane 🌀 that traversed the entire island east to west through the Cordillera central of Puerto Rico 🇵🇷
Thank you SO SO SO SO sooo much! This is what I needed for my Spanish Podcast...I'll be sure to credit your website in the finished product.
Holy Mole'! Thank you moviemagg for letting us know about CJ.
Man, I remember this. I was like eleven or so when it happened, and we had just moved to Puerto Rico in June. xD Quite the change from blizzards from up in the northeast to this type of weather in just a couple of months.
The winds in that video definitely seem to reach gusts of 180-200km/h! :D great clip. thanks for sharing!
Very impressive.
I was 80 miles away ifrom the Coast n Hattiesburg, MS when it hit the US. That wind is something that made me not want to sit through another hurricane. Ever. My goodness did it howl.
I was 19 when this came right over us in Cabo Rojo after about 12 long hours of being in the island. 4 more hours from the tail. The eye passed right above us "the calm of the storm". I can remember the strong echos there was with no winds to then suddenly strong force winds hitting the opposite side of the house. I didn't recognize my home area. Everything was wiped out. Trees fallen. No leaves on trees but everywhere else. Massive flooding because it stood in the Island for so long. To then hit straight to Dominican Republic/Haiti, Cube and straight to Louisiana. Hurricane Georges hits top 5 for most countries landfall for one Hurricane in history.
I live in Arecibo on the north coast of PR. When that sucker hit, I could feel my heavy aluminum "storm specs" windows moving back and forth a few inches even when anchored to solid concrete. At one point I thought the whole concrete wall was not going to resist. After that, the windows looked like if they were hit by a giant pressure washer and removed the paint! Tree leaves were embeded in the concrete. The sound is awesome/terrifying for hours.
i was there !!!! just a couple of minutes away from this place. I had a heavy AC on the wall and a wind pushed it inside my room !! a tree felt on top of my cherokee and we stood 3 months without electric service nor water ! how can u forget this ?
Sad to hear Jim has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Thoughts and prayers to him.
I passed that hurricane while living at home at the south coast. I was 12 by then. At first, I was excited because I wanted to to witness such an event. But when the storm hit the island, and the eye passed over my town, I was more than scared. The sound of the wind hitting the windows was horrible, even though it was a strong structure, I thought they were going to get blown inside the house.
I was 19, and the wind sounded like a train inside your house. The thing about Puerto Rico is that MOST houses are made of cement and can hold the winds, the problem is the flooding. Now a days most houses are being made with glass windows, like mine I hope to be able to get storm shutters. Also the problem is the AFTER the hurricane, no lights and no water, it sucks bad.
Also I would like to know why the quality of the video gets better at 1:15.Anyone know?
just awesomee.... probably some of teh most famous hurricane footage ever shot
I was 12 visiting Florida for a Disney trip. I remember thinking how dramatic the news was in America only to be up all night from the sounds! The roof window in one of our rooms smashed, and I remember the news anchor telling everyone to go in their basement which my step dad point refused. The next day everything was shut, there were washing lines everywhere and apparently lots of people sadly lost their lives. I remember the Minnie Mouse sign near Disney had ripped off and fallen on the world. We had visitors “the biggest McDonald’s in the world” the night before and the glass cladding was smashed. The uk government called us to check we were okay when the phone lines started working again. Crazy times
I living in Puerto Rico when this happen was 9 years old. It was the longest night in my whole life. This hurricane was the reason why we moved to CT.
I was 3 years old when this happened. I was living in San just, Carolina. I remember how my mom was holding our glass balcony door because it was about to fly away.
I was living in Dominican Republic, it came the next day after the hurricane hit Puerto Rico. In Santo Domingo, my neighborhood was a train wreck with all those tree branches on the ground.
I remember this. I was 8 years old. Lived in salinas and everything flooded it was crazy
In that day I was living in Ceiba, in Roosevelt Roads Naval Station... I heard it was in category 4 when it reaches the east part of the island coming from the sea... It's normal to weak when it go through the land... ;)
I can't believe you filmed this from your car!! You're crazy! My father died in Gurabo, PR as a result of Hurricane Georges. :-(
No video of a hurricane captures the horrifying experience of it. The sound is unbelievable and it is not captured by any video. Once it starts you get the feeling that your neighbors are not around. The worst of it all is that this can last from six to eight consecutive hours!! Count your blessings if you live in a hurricane free country.
i remember and i still cry, i lost everything. thanks 4 the footage it a masterpice for ppl who doesnt know what a hurricane is and they always wishing for one, they dont really know whta the f__ theyre saying! Thanks!!!
I was 16 when this hurricane hit Puerto Rico back in 1998 and I lived through Maria and now Fiona.
How would you compare Georges to Maria? I do know Georges moved faster, but in terms of intensity and how it felt in your refuge, how would you describe it?
Excelente video.
Where do people evacuate too?
Was your vehicle hit by debris? Anyway, I salute your bravery.
I was 4 and I remembered it as if it was yesterday!
Wow i was there in Hatillo and i experienced the same thing on my mothers house.I put my head to the concrete wall to see the windows moving, that was a scary night. we watch how my neighbors roof on a second floor house was completely blown away in one piece.
@jbcamprocklover Thank you for that because well I WAS 3 MONTHS OLD FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!! My mom was scared to death. And our wood boards in the front of our 2 windows of our house literally blew off.We lost great amount of food and milk.My dad brought enough Ice for my grandmother and family. My mom says the George was a MONSTER!!
@ajcusn i was there, i was 19 at that time and those were the sustained winds, most of the video looks sustained to me, the eyewall is much more strong
What the time of day when you recorded this video?
great video!
Hurricane George: No hurricane will surpass my destruction in Puerto Rico
Hurricane Irma: Hold my beer
Hurricane Irma: categorie 5
Antonio Acosta Hurricane Maria cat 5 now
Antonio Acosta
Hurricane San ciriaco: I am the worst hurricane to pass through Puerto Rico

@cyclonejimcom I was 3 months old. Were you in the south cause I'm living in Santa Isabel.Correct me if i'm wrong but didn't George came in throught Guayama and exited through Aguadilla and Isabela.
Great video. Take me with you next time!! :)
Oh, how vividly I remember all this. I had turned 12 the day before, the 20th. Yep, happy birthday to me.
puerto rico has had its share of killer monster Hurricanes damn
i was there
i was 11 when that hit Puerto Rico. I remember my house got totaly trashed, but we got everythingout of the house the day before.
wow i remember this huricane
dammn i was 6
Witnessed this hurricane in the DR. Opened my eyes concerning the forces of Nature. Almost every tree along the Autopista Las Americas was downed (people collected free coconuts the next day). I remember the quiet "eye". Then it came back strong as ever, with opposite winds! Huge tree-trunks blown down the street like waste paper.Airport ruined. Well, it was a crummy airport anyway back then - more like a bus station. Now it's a real airport. I write as Irene approaches, a mere cat. 1.
it is breathtaking
WHAT IS 2904?
I was born on this day
RIP Cyclone Jim
Miami and the tri country area in general needs a hurricane of about this intensity so that buildings that aren't up to code( built before 1994) can be damaged enough so they are required to be replaced but not so severe as to endanger the people inside. In the long run that is the best case as it would allow the region to rebuild stronger so when the big one comes the area can survive. if the big one hits first that people won't even bother rebuilding as losses would be to great to be worth the risk.
Tuvimos Una Buena Infancia! Con Este Huracan :)
I was in this hurricane too, it was awfully strong as you can see.
Dude, I remember how much it sucked to be with out power, I lived in lajas @ the time and we were without power for over 30 days also, but we did have water after 2 or 3 days. That was the only Hurricane I ever experienced & hopefully the last lol.
wow i was a little kid when this happened to my country and wow is that a category 3? i cant imagine category 4 and 5 wow
my friends and i were going to go to pr for a few days then bam!!! this happened. maybe soon we will go. pr is beautiful. that a wild hurricane.
Obviously I don't remember everything, but I do remember some things, like when my aunt lost her house because of this hurricane and that my family and I had to move to our neighbors house because ours was about to collapse because of the winds. Are you from Puerto Rico?
what was the cause of glass smashing between 1.55 and 2.15?
+Gareth T maybe sweaty panties
glass smashing??? what planet r u on
I was like 3 and I just remember when my father forgot put over protection to the door and it blew off. I can image that doors still working at today lol
Here ing Humacao where the center of Georges hits, the were reported about 85 to 112 mph and gust to 150 mph, me acuerdo que mi papa tenia el medidor de vientos y eso fue lo que se reporto aca en Pasto Viejo Humacao..
Because he filmed at 4pm or 5pm when the Hurricane still offshore , the eye of the Hurricane made landfall at night 9pm to 3am
Rode georges out on rosy rodes in the barracks. Def an experience of life.
I was 7 years old when this happened. It was a scary experience :/
UGH! HORRIBLE! MY FIRST HURRICANE AFTER MOVING TO P.R. FROM NYC....HOPE NEVER TO SEE ANOTHER ONE LIKE IT AGAIN.....BUT THIS TIME IF IT COMES, I'M READY. I'VE SINCE BECOME A PREPPER!
I was 14 when this hurricane i am 24 now and i still remember how powerful it was 2 months and half with no electric or water service and 1 month of no school. I wanted to see a hurricane but that was enough for me!
@ShybutFunGal1234 my dad worked on a 7up soda factory by that time and he also brought ice for my family! Our little palm tree in our front yard was literally ripped out and found two streets down. Our dog newton (R.I.P) had to stay at my uncles house and my mom was also scared to death
lived through this...no electricity for a month and no water for 3 months!!!
wow i remember this day i was 10 years old
thanks I wasn`t there but my fam. was Its not the same to see one as to be there.
