Layne, please can you do an Educational video on Non stick cookware coatings and what they term as 'Forever Chemicals'. I'd like to see you discuss this and if it's something that consumers can ignore or need to pay attention to, please kindly do a video on this topic. Thanks
When I was doing alternate day fasting, I was eating less on my fast days than on my feast days, because you still feel full after eating a normal meal. It does take a certain amount of willpower to keep this up. Autophagy wasn't a consideration.
I troll fasting advocates frequently. These clowns refuse to accept obvious evidence that contradicts what they want to believe. They are as bad as if not worse than low carb diet zealots and appear hopelessly irrational.
I lost 120 pounds between February 2023 to September 2024 with the help of alternative day fasting. My vitals are the best I had since I was a teen and my life is saved. For me ADF was a therapeutical device to make caloric restriction possible something I was never able to otherwise. I am 46 and tried to lose weight since I was a teen. Nothing worked until now. But I didn't bother about any of the pseudoscience about ADF out there. I never sought autophagy, and the "longevity" I expected was due to the fatloss alone.
Same here. Little younger, didn't lose as much as you but it's been the only method that continually works. My first period was a month in 2020 and I lost 10 pounds. I've more recently lose 13 after gaining some back, but yeah. It's the device that guarantees a calorie restriction for me and I'd rather that than nothing.
Im a faster, but I can readily acknowledge The only benefit to fasting is getting conditioned to a shorter eating window so you don't overeat. And for me I use that fasting time to consume most of my liquids as I typically want nothing to do with water later in the day.
Ive done it all over the years. In my experience this study is accurate. Slow and steady wins the race. If you exercise daily then you require fuel especially if you are resistance training. The magic happens over night through sleep and rest. Your body is capable of converting fat to energy so that you wake refreshed. Daily calculate that you are eating enough protein for your lean mass then make up the rest through fats and carbs. Autophagy is a very slow process and you will only see the benefits over time.
Thanks. I've followed fasting and strategies for longevity for a while, and it's been pretty apparent that calorie restriction is the main way that we see rats live longer.
Ive never seen anyone recommend 200% calories then a day of no eating though? Sure for weight loss and health benefits, ADF is done at 100 - 120% maint calories then a day of nothing? So overall a much reduced calorie intake?
Autophagy leads to a more efficient use of resources. Maybe there is a tipping point at some time but for common fasting protocols I would not assume a decrease.
Thanks for sharing this Layne. If you retire you could announce fighters for the UFC. In this corner...24hour fasting.....LOL. That fasting window 24 hours is not the usual intermittent fasting interval. It is usually 16-8 which matches the caloric restricted group that ate everyday. Eating food stokes the metabolic fire while in a deficit and with sufficient protein they will keep muscle and loose fat. I do low carb intermittent 16-8 to restrict calories and keep blood glucose lower. What the study shows is that you can restrict calories and eat throughout the day and have a better body composition outcome or the same outcome as a 16-8 fasting window. But skipping days of feeding will have you lose muscle and fat.
I might have missed this, but were these people training? I feel like the protein synthetic response of training *could* blunt some of the protein catabolism from ADF. I want to see what I did for alternate day fasting... cause so far it's the only thing for me that actually works given my lifestyle and eating habits which are unfortunately not optimal. What I did was I would eat a bunch of protein right before bed all days. Fast one day until bedtime, eat, then eat a normal days worth of food and repeat that protocol. I ate, what I believe would be, about maintenance on feeding days and just 240 or so calories of mostly protein on fast days right before bed, I also resistance trained 5 days a week. Personally, that promised protein bomb at the end of the day made the fasting bit a lot easier to manage. My rep-strength went up the entire 6 weeks I did this, plus I noticed decent muscle gain in my shoulders and arms for the first time in my life while doing this protocol. What I'm not saying is that it's miraculous --- The same kind of energy restriction across the same time frame with the same training would've given the same results (if not better). But again, with my lifestyle and eating habits I find that it is easier for ME to actually lose weight on a fasting protocol.
cool, i'll still do IF because it just helps me restrict my calory intake implicitly. now try and figure out whether that mouse study on gut stem cell activity + cancer risk in relation to refeeding translates to humans and if i should be worried about cancer risk because i'll be doing it for a while (atm i'm just assuming that refeeding with food that contains as few carcinogens as possible is kind of the only way to be a little bit safer but who knows, there's no data AFAIK)
the only conclusive evidence i have that fasting is good is that it fixed my blood sugar drastically. after running IF for a few years i never got low blood sugar again...other than that i never saw conclusive benefits. i still will run a window every few days but i eat normally now and it feels better and works better for training.

I'm sure nothing is proved, and we civilians only have a simplistic view of how autophagy works. But as a personal choice I water fast for 3 days once per month. I make sure to keep exercising while fasting.
Autophagy is a cellular process that happens constantly, it's not fasting exclusive. The less you eat, the more autophagy, generally. So during fasting, autophagy is elevated. But if you consume the same amount of energy during a day or week, the autophagy over the entire period is the same, regardless of whether you are fasting or not.
You must be a new follower. He’s a pretty passionate dude and with passion comes volume. He kind of does this shit for a living. I would focus more on his actual content and how it can improve your life instead of criticizing something so trivial.
Originally the concept of fasting comes from religions. So no surprise some people are being dogmatic about it. Knowing that Saoudi Arabia has the worst obesity level in the world, it clearly is not that efficient.
My dream: someone knocking on my door and asking me to be a subject in a human randomized control trial
Exercise increases autophagy much more than intermittent fasting 😊
Since you mentioned Menno, I bet you two could have a nice conversation about some fitness / nutrition topics. Would def like to see that.
I don't do all that often. But the best part to me is the mental discipline of ignoring hunger signals.
OMAD is the only style of eating that fully satisfies me when on a calorie controlled diet but i recognize it is not inherintly superior
Excellent!!!! Layne you never disappoint!!!!
You should def do a sitdown chat with Menno!!

Makes sense you would eat less or nothing on your FAST DAYS lol
"debunked" is a term by Redditors, of Redditors, and for Redditors
I am rarely impressed with the way a study is conducted, but this was sharp.

Thanks Layne, appreciate another study supporting what you’ve been telling us for years!👌♐️💪
It would be interesting if a similar study were repeated adding a group that participated in time restricted eating.
That’s called fasting?

Well another great video!! And once again it goes back to find out what works for you!! One size does not fit all!

When you realize the video is over, but you're not ready to part with it💕
I am particularly interested in a type of autophagy called mitophagy and how it might repair and rebuild mitochondria and fight cancer.
(2 seconds in) but was it a HUMAN RANDOMIZED CONTROL STUDY??!!
Ah okay so no, not this time. Well anyway- FOR THE ALGORITHM
3:10 I am one of those people, but I have no idea how to get in touch with researchers to find a study that I'd be interested in participating in.

Fasting was invented long ago as a religious or spiritual tool. Was not meant for body recomposition. "Eat less, move more!" (And move some weights)
Ive never seen anyone recommend 200% calories then a day of no eating though? Sure for weight loss and health benefits, ADF is done at 100 - 120% maint calories then a day of nothing? So overall a much reduced calorie intake?
In my mind , it would make sense that with more extreme fasting, autophagy slows down.
Autophagy leads to a more efficient use of resources. Maybe there is a tipping point at some time but for common fasting protocols I would not assume a decrease.

What explains the differences between lean mass loss? Something is burning it.
thank you sir
How many hrs was the fast?

So...eat less and exercise. Everyone else, please shut up at this point! ☺

Is there a reason why Thomas DL is such an advocate for fasting? Why does he promote it so much if he’s such an evidence-based guru?
Cause he rode the keto and fasting hype train too long. Lots of exaggerations and little context on that side
foooooooooooooooorrrrrrr the algorithm :D

I thought Autophagy didn’t occur until at least 48 hours of fasting…?

This one is gonna get some down votes 😂

@@Dan-qd9rc That does not work for the 'normal' speaking parts. It's annoying.

Real fasting has never been studied
