my interpretation of this koan has always been that people live a reality that is completely true to them, even if the ultimate reality is that it is false. until the japanese girl reveals the child is the boy's from the fish market, the reality everyone lives is that the child is hakuin's. everyone lives their truth, regardless if its the ultimate truth or a false reality and we will see this in our lives time and time again. so if the ultimate truth is never revealed, 'that' will always be so.
The story is a koan; don't try to assign meaning too quickly, if at all. Zen Flesh Zen Bones is a collection of koans. We humans could destroy it all with our reasons and reasoning; with our assignment of meaning.
