Rules are rules. However, on the third exchange they were lined up Jamaica, England and Australia, the order in which the girls were approaching the exchange. It seems like a harsh DQ and the Aussie girls would most likely have been happy with silver after such a good team effort.
Seem to remember the race which saw the then gold and silver medalists from the World Athletics Championships a year after this. India took the bronze medal in this race, an indication of what was to come four years later by hosting it.
Melbourne should be hosting the WC in athletics. I mean look at this fully packed stadium. Its so beautiful to see.

Indeed, but a result that leaves a bad taste in the mouth as England were clearly the better team and there was no intention to take an advantage.
