It's a fact, we love all things furred and feathered here at Visit Fylde Coast. I loved donkey rides when I was a kid and I still think the donkeys are adorable. They've been a seaside tradition on Blackpool beach for the last 100 years and they're just as popular today. Hear them jingle-jangle as they arrive on the promenade and find out more about the traditions in this video.

I am 79 years old and i remember going to Blackpool on day trips as a very young boy from Stoke-on-Trent, my brothers and I always had a Donkey ride every time we went, good memories.
I remember going on a donkey ride when I was a little girl. It's interesting learning about the history of this tradition.
I remember riding the donkeys when I was younger they are such beautiful animals adorable thank you for another great video x

Some of Blackpool Donkeys come to live near me during the autumn/winter at Latham House Farm nr Wigan. They are fantastically sociable and very nosey, always come over to say hello when I'm out for a walk. You can hear them braying at one another from across the fields most days and standing at the entrance to the footpath on Latham Lane with their heads over the fence, Love it when they're here!
Aw, I'd be visiting most days. Bet it's quiet for them after being on a busy beach all day with people endlessly talking to them.
Thanks again Jane for such a wonderful video. I'll be sharing this video with my grandson...it will resurrect memories of last August for him. He rode on one of the white donkeys. I wonder, if he can recall the name of his donkey? ....I'll put him to the test! He'll love and appreciate your video just as much as I've enjoyed it.....for resurrecting precious memories. Also, my grandson has his own donkey....he has adopted one for £3 a month....which he visits at The Donkey Sanctuary. The monthly donation contributes toward : food and medicine. It also pays for vets and farriers, as well as education and it rescues helpless donkeys from hopeless situations. 🐴x.
Aww there so cute I went on then on about 1992 I was 7 then I wish I was aloud on them now there beautiful I’m planning in coming back to Blackpool one day soon it’s been over 30 years thanks very much this video has gave me happy memories sad but happy I love there ears aww the one with the tiara is looking super cute
God love them all. They look like they are taken care of very well. I hope this tradition stays for a while. I loved the donkeys as a kid...sweet gentle animals.❤❤❤😊

Thank you for the explanation of how Donkey rides came about and also thank you for telling us of the regulations ensuring their good treatment. I always wonder whether livestock used for entertainment is treated correctly and after the scandal years ago relating to circus animal training cruelty I am glad that animals are banned in that sphere.
I have never thought of the horses used in the fishing industry and Donkeys also having anything to do with the rides. I saw [many years ago] writings of the animals used on pack-horse trails giving youngster rides when they reached the merchants in the markets but of course, the nearest market towns on the Fylde were places like Poulton - well inland!
If we hear braying outside the window at Brew-at-Two we shall know whether Sammy is enjoying the grass outside the Rabbit Patch!

Fun facts about Blackpools donkeys apparently they work from 10am till 7pm with an hours break and have Fridays off. All donkeys must have a monthly fitness check and be over four years of age to be ridden. 😃 just some information for anyone who is worried about animal welfare. Cute video
I detest animal cruelty but I think it's fair to say the majority of them are well looked after and quite happy.

My Mum used to keep the price of one last donkey ride for my brother on the last day of our holiday.
Can't be that bad an existence, bringing joy to little kids, important that care and good treatment are enforced

Lovely video, I love donkeys, but i just dont think in this day and age animals should be used for our entertainment. They may be well looked after, but its still a gruelling day for them stood there all day sometimes in the heat.

Donkey rides should be banned its out dated exploitation and cruel. If you love animals you wouldn't support this.
