    Amusing how a comedy like Kelly's Heroes is more accurate in its depiction of tanks than serious movies like Patton.

    Interesting facts (maybe)
    Many of the actors had military experience:
    Clint Eastwood -Army stateside during Korea
    Telly Savalas-Army WWII
    Don Rickles-Navy WWII Pacific Theater Appearing in theaters, even back then.
    Carroll O'Connor-WWII Merchant Marine Atlantic
    Harry Dean Stanton-WWII cook on landing craft at Okinawa
    Gavin Macleod-Air Force 1950s and of course later Captain of the Love Boat! 🚢

    Fun fact , Kellys Heroes was filmed in a small town of Vizinada in Croatia (former Yugoslavia) now every year ww2 airsofters and reeneactors do a ww2 kelly inspired battle in the middle of the town, right where the Bank and the "Tiger cowboy stand off" in the movie is.
    Right now the latest season of SaS Rouge heroes is filmed in the same place.

    The two Tiger I replicas from Saving Private Ryan were stored at The Tank Museum in Bovington, England for a time, but they have apparently been sold and removed from the museum. It looks like one of the tanks may have found its way to the United States, as one was reportedly used for a reenactment of the Battle of Carentan in Monterey, California by the World War II Research and Preservation Society. An article on the reenactment indicates that the Tiger tank is owned by Joe Fazio of San Francisco.

    The tube to mimic a larger main gun on the tank was one of the unrealistic parts of the movie as the Shermans with the larger (British 17 pounder) gun drew more attention and fire. Some of the 17 pounder barrels were painted in a disruptive pattern (camouflage) to appear as the smaller and weaker gun to not draw attention.

    Only problem with the '90 mm pipe' is that it's not as long as the tank's actual barrel. One thing I've always been curious about is the small ring bulge around the end of the barrel. What purposes did it serve?
    Not sure about tanks, but paint-bearing shells were a thing in naval combat during WW2. The Japanese heavy Naval shells contained paint along with the warhead/payload; different ships used different colors, mainly for shot tracking and marking. What I don't know is how tank crews in the field could've made their own paint shells.

    • @MilitaryArmamentsCompany
      @MilitaryArmamentsCompany 3 місяці тому +2

      Great questions there. The post war Yugoslavian Sherman's seen here had a 76mm US gun crammed into a 75mm style turret. To explain the longer gun in the film on an early war tank the pipe excuse was used, exceptionally well done creative liberty by the art department, vehicle crew whoever. A paint round could be very easily made from a HE or Smoke/ Illumination round by gutting the explosive component and filling that cavity with paint. The Ring on the end of the barrel I assume your talking about the British style firefly muzzle break? US 75mm had no muzzle break and the 76mm had a big baffle block style.

    • @bwilliams463

    Sorry dude, but the 76mm gun was added in the U.S. during the early 1950's as part of the upgrade program for the Mutual Defense Assistance Program. The upgraded M4A3's that the Yugoslavians used were designated M4A3E4. Hundreds of M4A3(75)W were converted to E4. Along with Yugoslavia, Denmark, India, and Pakistan received them as well.

      Ha! is this the part where we get all pissed off and butthurt? I had trouble finding information on those Shermans, someone had told me that only Yugo had those. • @Bojan_Kavedzic
      @Bojan_Kavedzic 11 місяців тому +1

      @@MilitaryArmamentsCompany Denmark, India and Pakistan also used those. IIRC Pakistani and Indian ones were based on M4A1 cast hulls, while Danish and Yugoslav were M4A3 hulls.
      As for Tiger mockups, they were originally made for "The Battle of Neretva" movie, and were also used for a few more Yugoslav war movies. Exact fate of those is unknown, but they were most probably scrapped with the rest of T-34s in second part of 1990s. There are also few more odd things, BAR is Polish wz.28 due the lack of US M1918, "M1911s" pistols are either ViS-35 or Star B, sniper uses Mosin sniper, as there was no 1903 sniper in Yugoslavia. At the time of filming, Shermans were still in use in Yugoslavia, through on their way out of service, being only used in Tank Bns of Infantry divisions.. Oddball's Sherman survived and is currently exhibited at Novi Sad Petrovaradin Fortress Museum, minus movie mods.
