I found a wood bookcase similar to yours on the side of the road on trash day. I only had to make dividers with 1/8 inch hardboard that you slide in a groove track for 6 hens. I did make a 45 degree storage door on top with hinges to store extra chicken supplies like brooder lights, feeders, waterers, first aid, hardware staples for maintenance, etc. I used your idea for the coop 1×2 perch.
    Edit: Nest box perch.

Rodents would tunnel or squeeze underneath and nest happily out of sight at the bottom of that. (I'm not trying to be negative, just offering some knowledge / insight.)

1 rooster 13 hens...those 13 hens are gonna join the #metoo movement. Roosters is brutal.

If the chickens don't like it at least you have some shelving. Looks good!

So after the fact , how did that design work for you? I'm in need of space saving nesting boxes. Thanks

They worked out well. I didn’t need that many spaces though. For a dozen birds 4 boxes is plenty.

I'm a big believer in "one man's trash is another man's treasure" have you seen "the story of stuff" great watch here on UA-cam. Consumerism is OK. It's the broken loop that creates the problems. Consume "waste", by recreating it into useful stuff. Support skills over products. Prepper 101 :)

Most excellent. I think I will use the interlocking method for your 1x12s and your rods out in front of the boxes are also a good idea. Just wish there was a way to keep them from pooping on the dang eggs

In Jamaica its better to use sawdust as the material for the boxes for the chickens to lay in

Hey JJ long time no see! Great video looks like a great job. I would have suggested staining the outside to protect the wood and make it last longer but great job. Btw did you ever raise your truck?

Should have put hinged opening doors on the back for easy removal of eggs. Or at least that's how I did it. And my boxes were bigger for more "comport to the hens. And snakes can get into ANYTHING! Good luck, Chicken farmer

Yeah if the wall it was mounted to had a door it would have been good to have an open back but it doesn't. :)

Mine mounted against the back fencing of the coup. I have since taken the whole coup down or I would send you pics. It was really quite easy to build. The birds could be fed, watered , and eggs gathered without ever having to step a foot inside the coup. I am guessing it was about 12X24' coup, so they had a lot of "room."Even MORE room after I got tired of being attacked by the rooster (who I let run outside the coup.) He met a potato rake!!! Needless to say, the rake won!

A friend of mine keeps a wooden egg in one of her boxes. They all lay their eggs in that one with straw too. Not sure why the egg. She only has hens no rooster.
