Honda 2020 F1 engine pops and bangs. Insane Crackles

- When i was at day 2 of pre season testing i noticed that the Honda engine sounded incredibly good and popped and crackled a lot. It resembled the sound of the 2011 blown diffuser cars
This video was filmed with an iPhone 6s
If you have any feedback on the video could you please reply.👍🙏
Earth Dreams is awesomeness!
Make the video longer! The video is already great but too short :(
@craftracer I had a few more clips that I regret not putting in but I have them in another video that should be out soon which has those clips and the other cars. Thanks for the feedback👍

Your gonna love the new V2 electric silent engine
I’m not a fan of the V6’s, but when I heard these things up close and personal at COTA, the sound changed my mind drastically! They will never compare to the engines of the past, but they hold their own!
well in 2025 they are bringing back “emotive” engine most likely hydrogen v8s so I think we will be taking abt how the new ones r so much better lmaoo
@OriginalFake I wish they would be hydro v12s but from what has been said it’s probably gonna be v8s but hey anything is possible
The off throttle sound the Honda PU makes has been in a class of its own since the start in 2015... never been the cleanest, but actually gives a rupturing sound all of us V8 fans are looking for
Yeah back in the McLaren days the one good thing about the engine was the noise.
@@boheyo the "only" good thing you mean. wish Honda got their bugs worked out before McLaren said F'off, we're going with Renault's power units.

Grand National?
@@Berchol No, the 80's turbo v6 in f1 cars. Senna's mp4/4 for example. GNX is very cool though.
Sounds more like civic
Why does this footage sound better than the official F1/Sky coverage and why does it portray the speed of the cars better?!
Special camera's at sky
@@REFLEXLWD Because the TV coverage is WAYYY too zoomed in. Back in the day the TV coverage was not as zoomed in and you could appreciate the speed of the cars. They have totally messed that up so we can all read the cars and teams sponsors for advertisement. They sound slightly better in person but not by much. Yes the Honda sounds that much better than all the other cars and Sky/F1 productions does not do an adequate job placing ambient microphones around the circuit for TV. They never had to with the loud N/A cars, but now they have too since the noise radius of these current cars is 1/4 as big.
Official camera's use too much zoom. So you don't get enough backdrop to get your reference points to estimate the speeds.
It is a Hollywood thing. In action movies they do the same thing. Whenever action happens or stunts happen you get focused shots. Except in old Asian action movies from Bruce Lee or Jackie Chan.
Using focused shots makes it seem a lot is going on but the real speed of the action doesn't translate to the audience. Whilst it removes the need for a retake if something isn't right in the shot, which is more likely to happen in action movies with a lot of extra's. So using a wide shot in action scenes is a high risk thing as everything has to happen correctly.
Of course you can say F1 isn't an action movie, but it boils down to how these cameramen and women are thought by their schools to take certain shots. As well as the desires of the company you are working for of course.
Why r u asking so many question
Because the cameras are too far away and zoomed way in.
Sounds like an enhanced anti-lag on the turbo!
wait, there's anti lag system in f1??
The hybrid-engine uses the MGU-H that's tied onto the turbo. When the car slows down into a corner, the turbo consequently decreases its revolution. In order to mitigate the turbo-lag, the MGU-H system works as a powerful and high speed electric motor to spool the turbo up before the exhaust gases do! This type of solution is far more advanced than the traditional anti-lag we find on rally cars.
@@TheRgf795 sounds more like a blown diffuser to me.
@@TheRgf795 and the traditional anti lag is also not very healthy for the engine compared to the f1 anti lag system with the mgu h
@@hhlun9428 It's more unhealthy for the turbo than the engine, I've never heard of accelerated engine wear from anti-lag.

The Honda engine has been the crunchiest since 2015. I love it!
Don't tell Alonso
@@icedviking4485 Oh he knows. I was there when the engine crunched itself to an early retirement under his ass at winter testing in Jerez 2015 :)
Absolutely, in their McLaren days it sounded like a Gatling gun at part-throttle. It seems to have maintained some of that characteristic
@@audioamateur True! It would be super interesting to know where the difference in sound comes from. But I assume they wouldn't reveal this information now...
@@bimonsolivar8898 Yeah i was always curious why the Honda engine sounded like that. Definitely the most exotic sounding of them all
it‘s definitely sounding better than when the V6 started in 2014
I was in Barcelona for the second week of testing, and it's true that it's quite impressive. I don't know if you noticed too, but the Honda engine smells when it pops 😉
Yep don’t know what the smell is though thanks for the comment👍
Lol, if it's true, then that would mean they burn more oil than permitted.
@@Petidani0330 sure man, you have so much experience to tell that just from knowing it smells....
@@Petidani0330 Yes it's true
@@oscarswaggie You don't need that much experience, only a bit of a logic. Have you been to a F2 race recently? I have, and there was the same sweet smell as in the V8 and V10 era of F1.
Now, where would that smell come from? Obviously not from the chassis, but neither from the tires, because that's an other kind of smell, definitely not sweet.
The only suspected part left is the engine. They use the same fuel as the F1 cars, but the latters don't smell like that for years now.
F2 cars, however, tend to spit out little clouds of blue smoke, which indicates burnt oil, while accelerating and going over bumps of the tracks. If you watch onboard footages, you can see the oil slightly blurring the image if there's a car in front.
Although Red Bull's excessive use of oil can also be explained simply with the cold engine.
The crowd in turn 1 was so excited when they heard these pops!!
Yeah you could hear people talking about it around the track it made some people laugh at the crackles
Some real engine!!!

IndyCar will be going to hybrid engines for the new car in 2022. I'm not sure if Honda shares any of their technology between their F1 and IndyCar engines but who knows, maybe some of the hybrid tech in F1 will make its way into the new IndyCar?

Honda's 2020 v6t is very good. Amazing sound
that sound on the downshift is insane
@NoNoNoNii Yah. But this one is the best though. V6's wouldnt sound so bad if they let them buzz to 18k rpm.
@NoNoNoNii If we would get back to v10/8's, we would have very many dnf's per race. It would Make the racing Boring, since it would be only about the reliability.
F1 is about the racing, not the sound of the engine and the exhaust.
@NoNoNoNii Yeah let's destroy our worlds climate even more. Let's have 5+ DNF's per race. Let's only depend on the sound of these cars. Fighting and strategies are irrelevant. Who the f are you? I grew up on V10 engines aswell but I dont cry about the new engines sounding "boring".
I love the v6 turbo engine sounds, don’t care what anyone says. Just cus it’s different doesn’t mean it’s bad.
That Honda engine sounds really going to be that little extra food for the ears when Verstappen will be overtaking !!

You can keep shoving them down our throats, but unless you've sat by the track during the early 90's, when we had V8, V10 and V12s screeming by!! And they popped and crackled too, if you could still hear after they went past!!

Pops and bangs is what these engines needed!!
Honda has always been the best sounding engine in this era. But it sounds decent at best. These V6T-H engines are definitely louder and better sounding than they were in 2014 which was an utter embarrassment to the spectacle of F1. It has slowly gotten better each year but people also have gotten "used" to them. Being used to something and actually liking it are 2 completely different things. Also younger fans may only remember F1 with this sound too. I will say the biggest change came when the cars got enormous after 2016 they did exhaust tweaks to improve the sound output by a good amount. In '14 they whispered and were very muffled and resonated, like a total vacuum cleaner... yet that year we had decent racing lol. Today they still have that sound but just opened up a lot more, the Honda is the only one with a defined growl to it. Sadly its as good as we are probably going to get. It's nothing like the chilling and epic scream we had with the standardized V10s 98-05 or the epic open 3.5L rules we had 89-97. Now a days the rest of the cars on the grid sound like outboard banana boat engines compared to the Honda. The Merc engine is the loudest of all the V6T-H's but doesn't have any definition to it. The Ferrari is hands down the worst sounding and quietest engine and always has been since 2014. F1 is a spectacle and these engines have really hurt it IMHO. The noise is what attracted many of us to the pure amazement of the cars and the sport. I've been to quite a few races since 2014 and the show just feels lacking and the racing has become too predictable with engine and tire management. They only really push hard in Qualy. Main thing is I want super competitive racing back in 2021, something we haven't had enough of during the Hybrid era. 2020 will be another double merc title by US/Mexico again. I also want F1 to adopt the Aeroscreen Indy Car has put in place. The Halo while a good step for saftey is hideously ugly and flawed as a safety device since it offers zero protection for small shards and fragments. F1 also needs to drop this whole road relevancy garbage and save the planet crap. Leave that torch to Formula E, its awful bumper cars racing and the political hacks in Brussels. And let F1 just be purely about entertainment and raw motorsport again. The hybrid tech is interesting and cool, but they could not have picked a worse engine to pair a hybrid turbo to. A straight 6 or V8 would have been way better. I wish F1 could have open ICE regs within a certain displacement like it was in the 90s, but allow for Hybrid's, Turbos, N/A etc. it's become too spec-series-ish lately. We only got our first major breakthrough with Merc's DAS system this year... which you know the FIA will ban for 2021, count on it.
I wouldn't say the current engines sound like the 2014 engines but simply 'opened up more'. They sound distinctly different to the low pitched sound of 2014, and even the higher pitched engine of the Ferrari had an obvious vacuum cleaner sound in 2014 that hasn't been present in more recent years. I'd say 2015 cars were the first to sound similar, but they were quieter and had a more noticeable turbo hissing sound. the 2015 McLaren Honda kept that ugly 2014 low pitched grumble noise in 2015 but had the good off throttle sound. And 2016's Mclaren Honda is by far the best sounding engine of the turbo hybrid era, noticeably higher revving than the any other car of the era and that amazing off throttle sound.
Maybe It's just me but i can notice and identify the subtle differences between the sound of each engine and each year and its more than just 'opening up'. 2018 had the best more of a grunting sound, 2019 the cars sounded raspier, 2020 and 2021 more smooth. I dislike the honda on-throttle sound the most but like the louder, raspier mercedes. I enjoy the 'barking dog' downshifts of mercedes and the higher pitch sound of the renault turbo spool. If open engine rules were allowed then the teams wouldn't run N/A engines, its a sport about performance, entertaining the fans with loud engines is just a side product of restricting rules to n/a engines. Infact teams are allowed N/A engines now, nothing in the rules says you can't, but all teams choose to run turbos.
Wow that's crazy! Sounds so primal! Like a wild animal!
It is the sound of victory!!!
now that sounds like a race car … on the limit... I love it
Best sound on the grid.
I was there in barcelona for the test too and I remember one of the redbulls literally let out “a supersonic boom”, not sure how else I could describe this haha. Nicholas Lindroos that happened at the final chicane for me as well and i was not expecting it
High end on the V6s isnt great but the low end is incredible (especially with honda engines).
The hybrids arent quite as good as v8s or v10s when going fast but the downshift and low speed noises make the cars sound pretty decent overall
What a perfect day ! F1 crackling and not a soul around
A considerable improvement, but the 80's turbo F1 cars still sounded a lot better than this.
Maybe but they were a heck lot less reliable and also slower...
@@Until_It_Is_Done well, when you make 1400hp out of a 1.5 liter engine, things tend to go boom quite frequently.
Aerodynamics have seen the biggest changes in F1 over the last 40 years, downforce helps a lot while cornering and the turbo cars were tricky to drive. Manual, non sequential gearboxes, fixed geometry turbos, which were huge, resulting in immense lag.
