I will double this up that coastal sailing can be nerve wracking. I do coastal sailing in Scandinavia and although it is beautiful, one cannot just relax as when one is out at the open sea. And plan B and C always a must have. I actually had to abandoned my plans sailing from Denmark to Sweden yesterday due to headwinds and waves around 5 feet. Long keels are not good going close haul. And after 5 hours I was back to where I started. Safe travels James.
I admire your bravery. Not a lot of people can do what you do. New watching your videos and Im in love with your content. Be careful out there! Trust your judgement sir
Great job as always love the content. I liveaboard a 40ftsailboat and own another 27ft and I never miss an episode Windy Hippie Sam Holmes and you are really getting it out there being safe making miles… Good luck out there!!!
As a viewer, I love the sporty sailing. That hard dodger playing hero of the episode. The dodger may have not wanted to go down the stairs in LA, but its in its true element today.
NZ has very changeable wind and sea state. 5kt in the morning, 30kt in the afternoon. Changes in direction, changes in visibility. It's all there. It's challenging, but that's the fun.
Till you are in the south and it is too rough to get into a safe harbour so you have to stay out. I got knocked down 3 times in a 12 hour period when a sea and weather change came up the wrong coast as a surprise. NZ is not a day sailors or a destination sailer place to be you want to be a blue water and prepared to change plans and add days to the journey. If you rush or push you will make mistakes and that will cost you. But yes it is exciting if you are prepared and in the right boat.
Been watching from the very 1st video when you were towing her! Happy to Sea you are living the dream James. Thanks for the advice a few years back! Fair winds my friend.
I watch a few sailing videos, bit biased because at the moment James is in NZ which I visited for the first time last November, but I do enjoy his videos the most. Very relaxing after a stressful day 😮
As a kiwi delivery skipper we get mostly SW to NW , a bit of NE a little SE & some good southerlies so the chance of a lee shore is more likely coming down the west coast & all harbours except New Plymouth are bar harbours , Not good in any westerly winds . On the east coast you have plenty of safe areas to stop or shelter , The biggy is from Napier to Wgtn.or Picton if you get the weather right but even there 'Waiarapa' coast in 50+ off the shore you can stay in close so no big seas a bit hairy for the uninitiated but easily doable , Just watch for cray pots in close .
An interesting decision to have to make but yes good seamanship does dictate doing the right thing for yourself and your boat. The Sailing Brothers (Luke and Adam on their Rival 34), sailed down the East coast all the way to Wellington and then across the straight over near Picton and have continued sailing around the area now. They intend continuing sailing down the East coast of sth island under the bottom before heading up the west coast. Mind you they are two up. Nelson marina is large and is a great area to explore. Nelson itself is a lovely town.
That’s fair enough James, the only sailing on NZ I have done was a passage from Nelson to Newcastle some years ago on a Halleberg Rassy 40. Sailing the east coast of Tassie rather than the West coast is most sailors preferred route here.
Man, that was some Really rough water you were in there ! You sure woke up in a pretty place though.I was noticing the thing which looks to hold the rudder seemed to unhook at one point. I like your help solutions - "Im gonna drink more coffee". Thanks so much.
Funny I was watching you and thinking Elephant Cove is not ideal in a bigger sea and entering in the dark not the best. I would make for Hooks Bay instead! It can be a bit rolly as the swell comes around but it’s safe in that kind of wind
It would be nice to see you mark in your planned route with stops for the episode. You orally described it at the beginning of this episode but I’m a visual learner. 😂. Noraly on her Itchy Boots channel does a great job with this.
I always like to watch your footages. They are very instructives. Probably, a more frequent use of maps when you edit the video would help to better understand. Fair winds Sailor James.
Hi mate, I live on my 30ft in Brisbane. If you want to get in touch when ya passing It would be great to catch up, will definitely be able to help you out in some ways. Fair winds mate
Always have a Plan C. The big brain move here is to make Plan C the place you actually want to go to so you always end up at the desired destination...
Long time watcher, rarely comment but really enjoy your videos. Are you required to check back into the US every so often or can you be gone as long as you want?
Hey man! I love your videos and am enjoying your videos of Aotearoa , there's just one thing that is bugging me. It's the way you pronounce Aotearoa. The A and the O are not pronounced separately, they are combined . It's sounds more like owwtearoa. I give you big ups for trying. The Maori language is a hard one to sound out . Hope to see you exploring more of New Zealand soon! Happy sailing.
I am an American and I pronounce it just fine and tons of Maori people have complimented me on my pronunciation of Maori words. One thing that’s bugging me is your desire to mansplain things to other people, you should really work on that.
I love it when the sails are set and you switch the motor off and its just peaceful.
Wise choices once again James! Another Master Class in Sailing!! Thank you.
Agree
I wish these were longer, I could watch for hours. Great job Sir!
I love your life, I think things u own end up owning u, you don't own a house etc, I think your very brave, and u give people inspiration
You wear your sailing emotions on your sleeves. I sail a similar size and age vessel. No one else on UA-cam reflects how it feels as well as you do.
Thank you 🙏🏻
I agree, feels right for the situation. Honest reporting
Can you be honest how limiting & annoying it can be?
I am really enjoying watching your adventures!
I work as a carpenter, usually the annoying way is the right way, sailors don't give up, I presumptuously carry that with me lol ✌️
So true. If not necessary to stress - don't. There will always be the opportunity for that when the time comes

Great music and someone who's interested in the wildlife.
Cool T shirt. Great graphics. Your sails seem in good shape after so many miles.
I have put about 9000NM on them and they are still in amazing shape
Love this guy. He is Awesome

I love it when your on passage...😊
As a viewer, I love the sporty sailing.
That hard dodger playing hero of the episode.
The dodger may have not wanted to go down the stairs in LA, but its in its true element today.
Thank you, this was a real good one!
Seems like yesterday you were sailing to Catalina and back!👍⛵
Love your videos greetings from Crete, Greece.

Very true statement

Your an inspiration for us to look at changing our current lifestyle to one of adventure.
Just found your channel, subscribed. You are a prudent mariner.

Very first video towing her? The first video was when I bought her in LA. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻
Hey mate cheers for another great episode 👍
As usual James, quality stuff.
Thanks James.

I know 20 kiwis that have all done it both ways and disagree with you
Doing it down the west coast means you don’t need to make any stops other than New Plymouth because you are safely off shore
Orcas, awesome!

All the hardcore kiwi sailors I know said the smartest way is the west coast and after doing it I agree

😂 me and my dad and brother were out there in 89. During a hurricane. 180k winds. Just a storm gib up.. was crazy... 26 foot Gazelle trailer sailer...

Yeah the tiller pilot pops off sometimes , it was a beautiful place to wake up to for sure !
