This was Wilkinson's chance to stake his claim to be put in permanent charge. But his task was a difficult one - France were the reigning world champions and on a 16-match unbeaten run. not quite.. even then was somewhat lacklustre.. having to have a stand in caretaker manager Howard Wilkinson didnt help much and i dont think Beckham was over France 98.. Keown and Adams past it.. Rio a newbie.. Andy Cole shite.. Shearer fading.. Owen not allowed to excel in a very rigid team.. of course France were way better but England were still disappointing.

I think the so-called England Golden Generation era (2002-2017; finishing when Rooney was finally kicked out) was the *pinnacle* of that. Beating teams like San Marino and Liechtenstein competitively in qualifiers saw some of our players celebrate like champions.

Watching this game live on TV during a season where peak Man United and peak Arsenal fought it out was one highlights of my football life. So many players from both clubs on both sides. The quality of football was very high.

This was the first international match I ever went to. I was sitting pretty much level with the goal line when Anelka hit the bar and we were all certain it had gone in. So funny seeing it now 21 years later! I remember Anelka looking absolutely lethal that night

I was at this game and was sat right on the goal line - Anelka's "goal" was clearly in. Also, why is he wearing goalkeeping gloves?

cuz he was an iceberg!!!. Only was good player when he was young and cuz had amazing partens on field. Anelka was a common striker, Henry was way better. So, backing, he used gloves cuz he had cold blood like lizards
