  • Terry Labonte absolutely dominated the 1996 GM Goodwrench Service 400 at the North Carolina Motor Speedway. Terry started on the pole and most people pointed the finger at the #5 Kellogg's Corn Flakes car as the one to beat.
He led 198 laps and clearly had the best car in this race. Unfortunately, a piece of trash got stuck in the front grille of his car. The trash got off the car, but unfortunately, the damage was already done to the motor. Water came out of the car and they had to come down pit road while leading to put water in the engine. However, it was too late. The engine expired and they had to retire the car.
According to the broadcast, a similar issue happened the previous week in the Daytona 500. There, he led a lot of laps early in the race. However, mechanical issues took him out of contention of a race that seemed like he could win there. He finished 24th, 4 laps down.
Obviously, Terry recovered from these two poor finishes. The speed shown in these two races carried over for the rest of the year. It culminated with his 2nd championship at the end of the season.

2 straight weeks where this happened. Trash got sucked in the grill during the 500 when he was the dominant car and killed the engine. They only won the 2 races in ‘96 but they were in position to win so many other races.

What's crazier yet is that his teammate Jeff Gordon was also getting DNF's those same weeks. Granted, one was for a wreck and the other was a blown engine, but still. Not a good start for Hendrick Motorsports in '96. Yet, they ended up duking it out for the title in the end.

Man what's up with all the suicide talk? Never heard anything like it on a NASCAR broadcast before

Because that's how people talk. You hear it all the time. Its sarcasm. You dont hear it now, because people are dying to cancel everyone for everything, so people are scared to say anything on air. You'd hear all kinds of wild stuff in the 90s and before.

Crazy how Terry felt that way and said that…in the same year he won his second championship.

I guess they didn't know about getting on the bumper of another car back then. He passed lap down cars with the trash on there, probably could have got it off if he had got right on their bumper for a bit.

cause he didnt need to, why risk possible damage to your car sticking onto the rear of slower lapped cars

@@housesports000 because otherwise you need to pit and/or have catastrophic engine damage

@@housesports000 He didn't need to? He literally blew the engine and lost the race. If he had got the trash off the first lap car he passed, he wouldnt have pushed all the water out of it. Did you even watch the video?

@@jesuschristislord6790 my bad for not elaborating, this is in the context that Terry or his crew were not aware of how bad the consequences were for having that plastic bag remain on the grille

Crazy to hear how disheartened that crew was knowing how 1996 ended up for Terry
