    NOTICE: Follow-up video can be found at • RE2 Remake Retrospective
    Ever since its official reveal at E3 2018, many people have been asking for my opinions on the Resident Evil 2 Remake... so here it is, in animated form!
    It's sad but true... I am personally very disappointed with how the RE2 Remake is turning out to be. I've tried very hard to push my bias aside, and simply be excited for the fact that it's going to exist. But it just doesn't work that way, I'm afraid. With such missed potential and an ultimately broken promise, it's difficult for me to feel anything but betrayed by the whole situation, at least with what's been shown so far.
    This animation alone couldn't possibly cover all of my exact reasoning for feeling the way I do, so if you have any questions or are further interested in my thoughts on the RE2 Remake, please take a moment to read this opinion piece I made to accompany the video:
    drive.google.c...
    Please also keep in mind that I don't think the RE2 Remake will be a ”bad” game by any means. If you're hyped for the RE2 Remake, there's no reason to take this video personally. My opinions are simply my own, and I don't intend to offend, discredit, or sway the opinions of anyone who may feel otherwise. Videos of this nature are always gonna have a touch of comedic anger, and that little jab at ”TrueREfan98” is satire that's only intended towards the fanatical types who lose their shit at even the most innocuous of criticisms.
    Whether disappointed or hyped, your opinion is valid.
    (As long as you're not being a complete dick to other people in the process, that is)
    Thank you for watching!

    As you all probably know, RE2make is now officially released! My husband decided to get the game for himself, so we're likely going to be spending the next few days playing it and seeing how it holds up. Jack will be playing Leon's scenario, and I'm going to play Claire's.
    Since this particular game is such a hot topic on my channel, I will likely be working on another video for my overall feelings on the full game. This will most likely be a more simple animation done in a similar style to REMusical Predictions, rather than the more intricate RE2make Reaction. I'll also make another, more in-depth text document to accompany it.
    Between getting the full experience of the game, writing about it, and potentially making a video on the matter will take time, so this will inevitably put a delay on the animation I was working on previously. Thank you all for the support and understanding, and I hope you'll enjoy RE2make and the upcoming animations!

      Same here for me
      I'll be honest
      I once or twice tried playing RE games but I just couldn't do it
      The controls are ABYSMAL, I can't handle the camera perspective, simple things like aiming a gun were terrible chores & I couldn't get past how clunky everything is
      But I haven't met anyone who loves this franchise as much as ShadowLeggy here to fhis extent
      Watching her original "in a nutshell" works long ago inspired me to see the walkthroughs, see the movies, and I've spent hours on end just excitedly reading every Wiki entries out there about it
      I was enthralled & became so enthusiastic about it
      & it all cascaded from her vids here, even now I occasionally come here for a laugh & I am never disappointed

    It should be given a fair chance. If it actually were like re4 it would mean a fast paced shooting gallery with melee mechanics and increasingly difficult and varied encounters with large amount of enemies where fast reflexes and situational awareness combined with effective level navigation culminate in a stylish slaughter of enemies and fast progression. The simple displacement of the camera doesnt mean plentiful amounts of healing items and ammo with easily dispatchable enemies.
    Still i would be equally or maybe even more so excited for a remake with a static camera because of the atmospheric effects it provides. Altough the over the shoulder viewpoint grants different possibilites for scares and surprises since you only see what the charcter sees.
    I hope all of us are pleasantly surprised and satisfied with re2 remake. It has enormous boots to fill.
    Also i would never ever ever want any of your videos to be remastered in Re2:R style. The old ones aren't going anywhere and they will forever be remembered by the fans. Loving all of your new uploads! Been a fan since your first musicals 😊

    • @residenteviltalk
      @residenteviltalk 5 років тому +2

      thank you for being open minded.
      I too will give it a fair chance. It is very difficult for many of us who grew up with the original games, who asked and begged Capcom to remake this game since RE1 remake first came out in 2002, we were basically ignored for 13 years!
      Its insane when you think about all that time it took to be heard as a fan and we knew as fans these remakes were a no-brainer. And as Shadowleggy pointed out many times, this was always advertised as a remake and then Capcom has openly said in interviews since E3 multiple times that its not a remake its a new game and they took a re-imagining approach, which is their words.
      I would even go farther to say the 13 years we tried to even as fans be heard to get this remake greenlit and the additional 3 years until the reveal of the game we have been giving Capcom a detailed blueprint and been consistent to be heard to make this remake very much like RE1 remake which has been known in the gaming industry and fans across the board as the quintessential remake, this is how you remake a game. And they did stray far from that formula.

    • @ShadowLeggy
      @ShadowLeggy  5 років тому +11

      I'll definitely give it a shot, and hopefully it'll be fair, though it's pretty tough getting over the bitterness of being lied to all the way back in 2015. And the little jab on Claire's jacket, while that's mostly made in jest, I'd be lying if I said I didn't just see a re-skinned RE4 any time I look at the standard gameplay from RE2make. It hurts a little bit more with each viewing, to a point where I haven't even wanted to look at updates anymore, but that's just me.
      With Capcom's track record of every single OTS Resident Evil title being almost entirely action-focused, also doesn't really help my outlook on how RE2make may wind up, but let's just hope I'm wrong about that in the end, and Capcom can finally prove themselves. It really would be a nice little surprise, for a change.
      And thank you, I'm glad to hear that! I've said it plenty of times before, but this channel will always be a place for the classic games, first and foremost. Trends be damned, I know what I like and I'm sticking to it :)

    • @GugureSux

      Mipera; the game will have AUTOMATIC SAVES, UNLIMITED SAVES, AUTO-BALANCING SYSTEM that spawns items and/or enemies depending how well you do in the game, up to 16 slots of inventory space, HUD that shows you a legit crosshair + ammo + HP + mission reminders, button prompts ... and who knows what else.
      It's not "just" the camera angle ruining this game for me, though that one is a big fuck up on its own already. It's all made even worse by the fact that you can now MOVE and ATTACK at the same time, with the crosshair always being stuck in the middle of the screen, thus totally removing the little bit of tactical thinking even RE4 still had with its stationary free-aiming.

    • @mipera
      @mipera 5 років тому +2

      @@GugureSux I havent heard anything of the autosave or difficulty system. Can you give me sources to read? Tho i like the difficulty system becuse that gives players eho play well more challenges. I love the movement lock of re4 and 5 but being able to move and shoot gives the enemies also more room to be agile and aggressive. You can move and shoot in SH1 as well. I do wish they include an extra classic difficulty where you havr ink ribbons like they had one in RE7. Theres gameplay of re2 remake with a laser sight so theres that.

      RE6 wasn't a total stinker IMO. Fixed camera angles are dated nowadays. They were used back in the 90s due to hardware limitation.
      "Item indicators are incredibly jarring and immersion-breaking,"- I agree,but this is how things work in 8th gen,we have huds and indicators for everything. Maybe they'll turn it off in the highest difficult,who knows.
      "The mechanics doors use just looks silly and almost broken, like they could've been programmed far better."-I don't get what you said,could you elaborate plz?
      "Near the same timestamp, characters constantly shouting profanities while being attacked is very annoying."-I think that's the same thing that every newcomer to that kind of situation would do
      "While I understand using the RE Engine, recycling the RE7 menu just seems downright lazy and uninspired."-RE had recycled menus from 1 up to CVX,that's a Capcom thing and I'm ok with it.
      "Claire has been altered to the point of being unrecognizable, with outfit designs becoming questionable at best."-The photo you picked is indeed weird because it is meant to be an official artwork,her ingame model resembles much more Claire's likeness and you can fix her questionable classic outfit by adding a black T under the jacket.
      "Keeping certain content behind a pre-order paywall sucks, especially when it's stuff that used to be unlockables."-I agree,but unfortunately 1 or 2 people won't change this reality.
      About the orverall darkness,maybe it's how they did video edition,maybe it was a preset brightness from the start which could not be changed,we'll know for sure when the game is out.

    The only problem I have with the Remake so far is the fact that the characters won't shut up during gameplay. The more the characters talk the less scared I am. Take the famous licker window scene for example. In the original it is silent as the grave and goes by very quickly. In the remake the licker crawls by slightly more slowly making a loud banging noise with Leon responding with "What the hell was that?" Which completely destroys the tension by overemphasizing it. The characters will often say things such as "I can do this" and "Stay back" when confronted with a zombie. This completely severs the connection between player and character and as a result The experience becomes substantially less scary.

    As much as I initially wanted fixed camera angles for this remake, I understand why Capcom decided to go with the OTS perspective. I remember critics calling fixed camera angles dated way back when Code Veronica came out on the Sega Dreamcast. I suppose Capcom wants the game to appeal to as many people as possible, particularly younger gamers, and fixed camera angles are a little too "retro" at this point. What really concerns me is how dark the game is. REmake managed to be tonally dark without literally turning off all the lights. I want to actually see what the new police station looks like!

    • @ShadowLeggy
      @ShadowLeggy  5 років тому +4

      I guess that's just the way they've decided to see things. Though I feel that HD REmastered proved that the classic style was still perfectly viable (and who knows how much more it could've been improved with RE Engine) Capcom would just rather do the more pandering thing in the end. It's a shame, but it is what it is. I do hope the darkness can actually be adjusted in a way that actually makes a difference, too.

      The original director blessed this project before it ever went forward. I’m sad there’s so many resident evil fans so firmly stuck in their old ways when it’s been proven time and time again how updating the series to keep it fresh while sticking to that classic outline is a necessary thing! RE4 and RE7 are amazing titles, 4 was a bit more action, but at no point does it feel less RE! I’m only excited to re-experience 2 in a new light! With all the new and old nostalgia that comes with it! Fixed cameras aren’t necessary, nor would they improve anything, I grew up on fixed camera and can gladly say I’m glad we’ve moved on! I’m also sick of people acting like RE:Remake was an exact 1:1 remake. It’s not, they added new areas, an entirely new boss, and made zombies terrifying again with the crimson head mutation! So when you’re complaining about a reimagined re2 just remember you’re at least being somewhat of a hypocrite and you should and it should be acknowledged!

      @@joshuaperkins4565 I already said Remake added new content. I was referring to Lisa Trevor, crimson heads, etc. But the game is almost a shot for shot remake of the first one, BESIDES the added content and improved graphics. Unlike the new game, which isn't made by the same team as the original Re2 and has an all around different vision.
      While I could argue REmake was meant to replace the original... I don't think RE2make has the same intent.
      As for fixed camera angles vs over the shoulder? One isn't more valid than the other. Modern third person games (while great) aren't as cinematic and look kinda stale after a while. And I've played and still play to this day fixed camera mode games and railshooters when the mood hits me, but I have to say i'm excited to see what they "change" in this remake. I'm often blown away by today's games and how much they've changed. I started out back in the atari era I understand your want to relive your childhood in a game. Which is why I still own my old systems or replaced the broken ones with new ones, so I can do just that.

      I appreciate it, and that's completely understandable. A lot of the disappointment for me comes from their "We Do It" campaign in 2015, in which we (the ones supporting and commenting for a classic styled RE2make) were basically lied to and kept in the dark for 3 years. But I do truly hope they return to horror as they claim this time. Though even then, they've promised the same concept for every other OTS title, which all ultimately became actions games instead. So here's hoping this one will finally be the real deal.

      @@ShadowLeggy True story and I understand the disappointment I didn't know the support for an RE2 remake was made by support for a classic styled game. I thought it was just support for a remake remake. That being said years ago, players had to live with odd camera angles, fussy controls, and frustrating save systems, which I might add, we old gamers tend to hold on to as to that's what made the older games so great. I believe however that their focus seems more towards growing their fan base by making the remake more updated and accessible to today's gamer. Thus breathing new life into a all but dead franchise, which has me excited to see what they will do with RE after the remake/rewrites. So long as they don't make the remake "easy" I will find great joy in playing it as I'm sure you might as well. I enjoyed how they tried to balance the horror side with the action side in RE7. The simple fact that I didn't even want to buy RE7, but was told by a friend he thought I'd enjoy it says a lot to me about how they are wishing to make RE back into a horror/survivor game franchise.

      Fixed camera angles added to the tension! You could hear creepy steps, roars and other creepy sounds, but fixed camera angles prevented you from checking it out, which made the situation scarier! When you see everything and everyone approaching you in your line of sight as soon as you hear the sound it defeats the purprose of "unpleasant" surprise! Thats how i received my first jumpscare, when Nemesis followed me to the next room in Police Station in RE3 and as soon as i entered it to my surprise i could hear his roar, but couldn't see where he appeared, so the fixed camera angle preserved the tense and scary moment for me! If i entered the room with over the shouler view i would most likely immediately spotted him at my line of sight and it would ruin the scare!

    My biggest problem, just off of watching others play the demo, was a simple one: Zombies are now bullet sponges, EVEN if you shoot them IN THE HEAD...you know....that one thing that rewarded you for your skill with NOT wasting your ammo. But no, now you can shoot them in the head four times, and their now faceless head will chase after you to try and bite you.
    My brother also brought up the lighting. If the lights are on, you're safe. If they are off, you're in danger. It really takes the suspense when I have a clear indicator of if I can or will be attacked. Becomes less horror and more: Oh hey the obvious 'zombie sign' has been lit up, thanks for warning me game.
    Also this one is more of a personal bug than a criticism, but it seems to be more of a gore fest than horror. I feels more so like they are trying to make me vomit than scare me. I know for some gore is one of the most horrifying things, but for me its just disgusting to look at. At no point playing or watching others play did I feel fear. I don't think I need to say this but for a horror franchise that's very very bad.

    • @ShadowLeggy
      @ShadowLeggy  5 років тому +2

      Huh, well that's interesting to hear. Like, it makes sense in a way that zombies are "tougher" and don't die with a hit to the head, because... OTS style aiming would make that ridiculously easy. I see that as kind of an "oops, we fucked up" situation though, since, well, RE2 was never an OTS game. RE4 was, but RE4 didn't have zombies. _Oops._
      If the lighting "warning" sticks around too, that'd really be a shame. That's like, A Machine For Pigs level of immersion breaking and completely ruining the horror. That's how horror works, you're not supposed to _know_ when the danger is coming. Really hope the finally release won't be that blatantly obvious.

    Here's the issues I have with using REmake remaster's sales as a reason to why Capcom should have went for a near 1:1 remake with the original camera angles, etc. etc.
    REmake remaster is what it is, a HD remaster, and it's one of a game that was a Nintendo exclusive for 13 years until the game was finally remastered. Many people never got the chance to play it because of that, and I'm sure when they saw that the game was available for a mere $20, they jumped at the opportunity. IMO, you can't compare the risk between re-releasing an established game that's been out for 13 years at the time RE2 remake was green-lit vs. making a full price triple A title in a similar manner as the former.
    Zero remaster's sales paled in comparison to REmake's. The PS3 version of REmake remaster sold more copies than all versions of Zero remaster put together, just to put it into perspective. Overall, the sales did not share the same success, and it wasn't even close. I know that this was expected, but as I said above, people never had the opportunity to play what was arguably the best video game remake of all time.
    Now, I definitely don't disagree that Capcom took it WAY too far with the "We Do It" campaign, and I'm certain they are aware of this. They honestly shouldn't have even announced that the project was green-lit to begin with.
    Despite everything though, I want to thank you for still giving it a chance, and your opinion on a video game would never make me want to stop watching your videos. At the time I saw your videos for the first time in 2007, I only had played very little of REmake and 4 was the only Resident Evil I beat, and I never bothered with ANY of the other games from that point on. (I wasn't even aware REmake was even a remake!!) Your videos are what introduced to me to all the other games and got me hooked on this franchise for good, and gave me the interest to play and beat all of the classic titles. I thank you for this.

    • @ShadowLeggy
      @ShadowLeggy  5 років тому +1

      My counter argument is that the potential seemed astronomical to bring the HD Remastered style onto the RE Engine, and build it from the ground up. I'm sure even more improvement and modernization could've happened, without sacrificing the "spirit" or Resident Evil 2. But now, sadly, we'll probably never know.
      While yes, RE0 Remastered was not as successful, that's simply because RE0 is not a good game compared to REmake. Not because of the camera or controls, but all of the other strange changes they made to the gameplay. It's essentially like comparing RE4 and RE5. One is loved, one is hated, and it's not because of the camera, but the other off-beat decisions that they decided to implement. Though I do agree that HD REmaster had the benefit of already being known to be an outstanding game, which also must've helped its sales.
      And thank you, I really do appreciate your input and over all, I think you make a good point. That very well might've been what Capcom was thinking, among other things. I'm glad to hear that my videos could interest you in the series as well! If you get RE2make yourself, I hope you have a blast, and maybe you can try some of the older games someday, too!

And yeah, Claire's "classic" outfit is free / unlockable.

I only recently realised that you are still uploading videos, I am keen to watch through them all and I am keen to see the video after you finish resident evil 2 remake.. I never got a chance to play the original resident evil 2 so I love this game, I knew the story from your songs and some wikis but I am so happy to get a chance to see the remake of this!.. I can definitely see where you're coming from. My brother and I grew up with Resident Evil, and by extension, it's why I've followed your channel for about a decade or so. By the way, thanks for the quality content for the last 10 years.
    But I don't even feel like this remake should be considered a remake. It's too far from the source material, and is more of a reimagining of the original game, and can be enjoyed as long as you try not to compare it to the original, which is kinda disappointing. In my honest opinion, I think it's an attempt to bring the games into the modern age to appeal to younger generations, which would be more profitable than catering to older fans. A tad disappointing, but I'll still enjoy it. After all, good Resident Evil games are more and more rare these days

    • @ShadowLeggy
      @ShadowLeggy  5 років тому +1

      Hey, sure thing. And thank you as well, it means a lot that you've kept up with my channel for all this time, and that you're still enjoying it :)
      The sad thing about all this, is that it honestly isn't a remake, because when the Capcom's Brand manager was interviewed, he blatantly said as much: sta.sh/0178ea95ee8p Even though when the RE2make project was announced, it quite literally was called "Resident Evil 2 Remake", so yeah... we were lied to, and that's what pisses me off the most.
      That being said, it is what it is. Like you said, they chose to backpedal and target the newer generations instead, and there really isn't anything that can be done. This was probably their last feasible chance to ever make a classic game, and they wasted it, so c'est la vie.

      Don't get me wrong, I'm definitely going to play the hell out of it just to get my money's worth, and I'll enjoy it as long as I don't compare it to the original. Mine tastes like actual dirt compared to his expertly crafted steak experience. If that makes any sense at all

      @Jonathon Lundin: For me, it's mainly the "indicators" that are placed on top of everything. A giant cartoon arrow hovering over items, puzzles, drawers, doors... it completely kills the immersion and challenge. And I remember RE6 literally did have an arrow you could activate to show you exactly where you needed to go... let's hope RE2make doesn't have that, either.

    RE2 was my first Resident Evil game and when they announced the remake i was extremely overjoyed. But when Claire's original voice actor, Alison Court said the studio decided to go non-union and not cast her as Claire's voice, I felt extremely betrayed. I could've do my best to adjust to the new face' design' capcom wanted to go with as long as it was the Claire Redfield I knew from heart but that's not happening. I honestly want to give RE2 a chance, but I think my expectations for it is hanging by a thread.

    You’re right, can’t really say for sure if it’ll suck hard or not. Personally, I haven’t been too hyped about a new RE game in years, so I’m pretty much used to just waiting it out and giving it a “meh” or never even playing it. I will be playing this though, I wanna see if it’s at least fun. Aside from the reveal trailer I haven’t really watched anything else about the game. I kinda like to be surprised about new releases and actually experience them blind. Might be cool to see what story elements have changed. For better or for worse! Definitely a let down at this point it doesn’t look as cool as REmake did.

      The sad thing is, I went easy on ol' TrueREfan98. I've seen considerably more horrible comments both towards me, and others who showed even a hint of disappointment in RE2make. So yeah, fuck those people. XD
      And yo, THANKS! I figured there were gonna be a fair amount of static poses, so I focused a lot on smaller animations like eyes, mouths, and hair. And I got to go all-out with using the royalty free stock images and effects, they really help the video pop I think, unless anyone finds them too stock-looking. But so far, no complaints!
      It's honestly pretty insane how many screenshots and videos they're releasing about RE2make. Like, to a point where they're apparently revealing most of the game. Some people have even been calling the latest footage "The Spoiler Video", like the fuck is you doing, Capcom? It's one thing to show off a game's capabilities, but damn.
      And yeah for sure, REmake is literally the best, nearly-perfect remake of a game I've ever played (Spyro Reignited looks fucking great, too) so it'll forever be a disappointment that they'll never fully realize what and RE2make could've really been.

    I think it's fair to say this kind of reaction is unreasonable. If you were expecting a fixed camera style, as if that would fix every problem in the game, but still keep it a good game for the intended audience, it's not reasonable. I love resident evil 2, it's my favorite game. But it's 2019, and Capcom knows how fixed cameras would work in a modern setting. It wouldn't work. The modern gaming audience would hate the camera style, and would hate the controls. Behind the back isn't my favorite part of resident evil either, but it's what will make the game sell copies. From what I've played of the demo, it feels like they really knew how to keep the "scares", while also reaching another audience. If I can still get a good game, and more over, move on from the original resident evil style, I think I can be happy.
    The game looks like a great game, regardless of the vision Capcom had. And Mr X looks lit with the fedora, he looks like a neck beard. Which is hilarious.

    • @ShadowLeggy
      @ShadowLeggy  5 років тому +1

      If the classic style of Resident Evil was dead, I don't think REmaster would've become their fastest best-selling digital game of all time. Not only that, but REmaster also proved that the classic style could be given new options for players who don't like tank controls, including an all-new analog scheme. If they could do that in an HD remaster, the possibilities of further implementing options into a brand-new title and engine are almost limitless.
      That's not to say the RE4 style _isn't_ popular obviously, since the reaction is still mostly positive. It's just a shame that they essentially promised a follow up to REmaster, but instead decided to cater to RE4. It is what it is, but being disappointed about being lied to is _not_ unreasonable, I'm afraid. I don't think it's going to be a _bad_ game, it's just not the game I was told we would get.

      So far, it very much seems to be the game you were told you were going to get.
      If we’re going to be technical, REmake was actually more of a modernized version of the RE formula at the time and this formula was then used for Zero afterwards then RE4 happened and changed the series forever. So, it’s not exactly a weird thing for the devs to take a version of the RE formula that’s popular now and polish it up to make an even better experience that’s faithful to the experience of the original. REmake wasn’t even a 1:1 remake, it added as well as expanded upon many aspects that made it its own thing.
      Remake never means remaster, so enough with the lame “betrayal” and “lied to” nonsense.
      From my perspective, a faithful reimagining that does its own thing is more inspired over a boring 1:1 remake that’s only interested in catering toward nostalgia.

    I pray it will work out, but the simple fact they got rid of the little things that made the game what it was like the costume design, the static camera system (and not being over shoulder...), heck even the little sparkles of "item here" has truely saddened me.
    The fact they have gone back to do it at least gives me hope that we will see other remakes of classic capcom games at least and I might enjoy this 1, but I dont know, I didnt play resident evil for a shooter, they just completely changed the genre.

    I don't hate you for this, but that's pretty BS especially if you act as if you were the only one who grew up with the originals. We were waiting for some good RE for years now, almost when every new game tries to please a certain fan-base, another will complain.
    It happened with RE6, and it happened with RE7 (which btw, did go back to the roots, and I'm not talking about camera or B.O.W.s but the essence) and now (thank god) this Remake is making the original game even scarier by having things like randomized T-00 Encounters is something to really appreciate.
    I don't like Claire's new outfit and "classic with cleavage" outfit either, but the game itself is looking and playing much better than the original and it sure as hell deserves the attention it's getting since I'm sick of all other generic games and their fuss. They are doing what they couldn't do back in the day and the fact they're revisiting scrapped/unused ideas just says all about their enthusiasm with this project. Same goes for coated Ada (which is an original 1998 unused concept and she only wears it during her initial appearance to match with her spy persona) and T-00 with a hat (another unused concept, but you can shoot off the hat if it bothers you that much) and Leon can wear his original outfit for free if that also bothers you that much.

      Literally everywhere you went for over a decade that would be brought up. I still remember on Facebook when on Capcom's official Resident Evil page said they would remake RE2 and Capcom asked the fans how they should remake the game and the most upvoted responses were to have fixed camera.
      Sure everything else was taken into account but when you go so long fighting for having this remade in that way and they couldnt figure it out? They are a multi million dollar company! Ive seen modders be able to do this such as Rod Lima and he is one guy with zero budget.

    The first Resident Evil I played was RE2 years ago on the PS1 and I finished it and I loved it. RE2 is one of my favorite Resident Evil games. RE2 was also the very first video game I ever played. And then when RE4 first came out and I played it I liked the over the shoulder camera way more than fixed camera angles, and i'm not bad at the fixed camera angle Resident Evil games or anything, once you get used to the play style of the fixed camera angle ones I actually think they are really easy and easier than the over the shoulder Resident Evil games actually. (I'm not bad at the over the shoulder Resident Evil games or anything either I just think when compared to the fixed camera angle Resident Evil games the fixed camera angle ones are easier once you get used to the play style of them). So I think the fixed camera angle ones play fine so i'm fine with the fixed camera angle Resident Evil games, I just still prefer and enjoy the over the shoulder camera way more. When RE4 first came out and I played it (I had bought a GameCube just to play it) I just really like the over the shoulder camera and thought it was a huge improvement over the fixed camera angle Resident Evil games. So I am so happy the RE2 Remake is over the shoulder and not fixed camera angles honestly.

      That's completely understandable! I don't think one style of camera is objectively better than the other, it just comes down to preferences, like you said. If anything, to me the different style of camera completely changes the gameplay, and thus is basically a different genre all together, so it makes even more sense that some folks prefer one over the other.

    You know what would have been cool? A semi fixed camera like what they did with the Beta of Resident Evil 4, let me explain: the camera moves around the character during the exploration (giving the creepy sensation that something is following you) and during the fights, the camera would move over the shoulder... Check the videos on YT to understand what i'm talking about

      That could've been pretty interesting. There was a very low-budget game called Cold Fear which did this, and for what it was, it was actually able to pull off some cool and creepy stuff with that style. It's just a shame the small budget affected the game a bit, and I'm sure a AAA multi-million dollar company could pull it off spectacularly. But I guess we'll never know, unfortunately.

    I agree... my friends are shitting on me for it too it sucks. Its just a direction i expected but wished didnt happen... none the less it looks like they are doing everything they can to make the atmosphere completely terrifying... personally i cant be scared by a game Unless its the classic re camera... anything else is just too... predictable. But from the gameplay ive seen, you might as well be shooting their legs as headshots dont matter (like in original) and funny quirks like dodging seem to either be short of impossible, or impossible this time around... fingers crossed it just gives rise to a proper Resident evil 8... or reboot... i need my wesker back
    Gotta add the character designs are god awful... everyone looks so... fake.

      I do hope that when they say they're going to make this an actual horror game, that they mean it. Every single other previous OTS title are decidedly action games through and through {despite being advertised otherwise), and I'd just hate to see the same awful thing happen to Resident Evil 2.

    As a long time fan of resident evil, I have to say, that the resident evil 2 remake is the one I'm most torn about. I would have loved to see something akin to an evolution from the first remake on the gamecube, but this is still just a divergence from it. But, its not a completely different experience from the resident we all know it seems. Its just that despite those elements that we do love about resident evil being present, I can't help but feel that people will not notice. Newcomers will praise the game for its gore, its weapons system, its graphics, and maybe even its interface. But, they may not notice what made resident evil so great as a horror and storytelling experience, its wonderful directing . People miss the point of why some fans miss the fixed camera angles, and its as simple as what made older final fantasy games feel so much larger in scope than they do today. Having a fixed camera allowed for directing the players focus on certain scenes throughout the game, which told the player where their attention should be drawn and provided a window to see the world the way the writers and artist intended. One might argue that the lack of freedom in this is a problem, but this is exactly what movies do, hell even on stage plays do this. (Imagine being literally placed in the universe of Othello the Moor instead of watching from the audience. You might not even know if Othello even existed.) It was all for the sake of presenting the world of resident evil, but also establishing the best way possible to experience it as well. Sure, they do this now, but just not the extent they once did.
    Now, I'm not arguing that a good resident evil game has to have a fixed camera in order to be a "real" resident evil game, (although I would like this). I just don't think the direction its going really focuses on these elements like the originals. Instead of making enemies ultra grotesque and limiting visibility to provide anxiety, I think they should have instead found ways to reimagine the feeling that the resident evil 2 provided, basically the same thing they did with the first remake. I mean it when I say that you can make just about anything in any scenario scary if its directed well enough. It doesnt take fixed camera angles, it takes the ability to play with the players own fears and Interest that they already have within.
    To finish, I just think Capcom will notice praise for already tried and true modern game mechanics, which will once again yield a resident evil sequel that is unrecognizable from what we know. Such a shame they seem afraid to show newcomers to the series why we loved it so much in the first place.

      Well, I'll just keep it short and say that I completely get where you're coming from. Regardless of the majority praising it, I can still see why this is still yet another divisive game in the franchise, and there's no shame in feeling one way or the other about it. Honestly, it's a lot to take in for a fan.

    I hope that the game can have a "classic mode", with fixed camera angles to get that old school RE vibe, and if that's not possible then I sure someone is gonna make a mod for it XD

    Switching gears...
    I for one like the direction they're going with with the REmake. I honestly see a lot of RE 1.5 inspiration mixed in with what we got from the original RE2 for this remake. I for one am really looking forward to the moments when we explore the streets more than any other area in the game.

    Read your great opinion piece, and I mostly feel the same way, but I do think that a RE4/RE7 style remake of RE2 is better than none at all. But yeah, I do feel a slight sadness thinking that it (RE2 remake) could have been done in classic style like the REmake.
