These card fronts are so pretty! Great tutorial!
Could you have started with colored cardstock and put white ink on the parts that you wanted to be a lighter color? Then you could put the lighter ink over the white ink. Of course, you would have to wait until the white ink dries, but that would not be a problem if you were making many backgrounds at one time.

you can but it woudln't be nearly as crisp and colorful...
Loved the colours from the crisp dye inks, but was always a little sad, that they don't blend very well. I have to try the new dye inks....
