80-89 my favorite is Tincup 10 yr at 84 proof. Honorable mention Michters Sour mash at 86
Tin Cup Ten Year. $40ish. 84 proof. It's delicious. Though hard to argue against Old Forester 86 at closer to $25. OF86 is an OUTSTANDING value without question.
Evan Williams Single Barrel
Love it too! However not made right . I bought the last 3 btls. At a local liquor store.
That is the best Evan Williams product I have had!
Discontinued. I got one bottle in the shelf
Old forester 86 in the low proof is my go to
Single barrel is really good! But the last small batch I had wasn’t my favorite..
I prefer the 100 Proof, but Old Forester 86 is awfully hard to beat.
Please please please, tell us more about this Holiday punch you spoke of! We need the details! Thanks for everything you do, love this channel!
My Dad drank Evan Williams Black Label day in and day out in his old fashions. If you buy it by the handle it's about the same price as water. I always pony up the couple of extra bucks for the bottled in bond white label.
Hah! In my area I've been getting the EW Black 1.75L since 2010 for $14-18. The BiB is always $10-12 more, but have started getting that instead.. Been getting the EW eggnog off season for $2.99 & $5.99 1.75L.
TinCup 10 with MGP is my favorite off the top of my head. Higher price point and not as easy to find, so doesn't perfectly compare to your list. Thanks for the notes.
Agree on the TinCup 10 yr... the only issue is the price. Its just too steep for the proof. Really tasty stuff though.
My favorite low proof bourbon has always been Evan Williams Single Barrel. 86 proof. While they ranged from bottle to bottle, most were really good.
Agreed! I have had some that were Just as good as any allocated bottle in my collection and some threat were borderline undrinkable…which makes me love them all the more.
Cheers
Great list! Thank you, Fred. For me, Old Forester 86 is my favorite under 90 proof. You were right. All the "low proof" bourbons I enjoy are 90 or above.
100% agree! Outstanding low proof and under $20 around me!
My favorite also
Tin Cup 10 year is a great low proofer!
Good stuff Fred. Your right about the 90 proof point. It really opens up the field. Just out of curiosity, would you go for the EW 1783 over any of these? I find it to be a great entry level, affordable bourbon and it's also found everywhere. ( I always got a few bottles in the closet).
EW 1783 is a great budget bourbon. But it is now 90 proof.
@@enriquefors3284 Thats why these kind of videos are silly. Price should ABSOLUTELY be a factor.
Tin cup 10 year is 84 proof.
It’s a 10 year MGP sourced. Can’t believe this didn’t make your list. It’s tasty af.
Love Tin Cup! Good choice! But is not a bourbon....technically
@@charlest8373 how is it not a bourbon?
Old Forester 86, Wild Turkey Longbranch, and Evan Williams Single Barrel are my top three low proof with any of the three taking the lead on a given day. Unfortunately EW SIB is only available in KY now. Gotta go back home to get a bottle.
Old Forester 86. I buy the EW black by the handle for mixers and I absolutely love it. I never ask for Jack and coke, ask for Evan first!
I see a few nods for Tin Cup 10yr or Michter's Sour (not technically a bourbon). I would agree. I also kind of like Wyoming Whiskey Small Batch. I know this was a bourbon list, but Michter's hits again with some other nice low proof options in both the Rye and American Whiskey. Funny thing is I prefer both the Sour Mash and American Whiskey over their Bourbon. One other bourbon I can think of is Evan William's Single Barrel. Sadly this is now a Kentucky only release so I can no longer get it. This used to be my go to low proofer.
I know you had to draw the line somewhere, but the "world" opens up at 90 proof (as opposed to 89 pf limit). This is very common to other lists:
1. Tin Cup 10 yr
2. Wild Turkey
3. Very Old Barton
4. Evan Williams
5. Gentleman Jack
I'm surprised Tin Cup 10 year isn't on the list. That bottle has gotten a lot of whiskeytube love recently.
I'm saying the same thing but technically it's not a bourbon.
@louidaiv2387 Actually, TinCup 10 year IS a bourbon and is now labeled as such.
@@xiamengbaby I thought it said American whiskey 😵💫
Wild Turkey Longbranch was the one that started my madness into bourbon. I still love it.
Alright alright.
I agree Shawn, it's still underrated. It must be that $40 price point that is off-putting to sum. I wonder if Matthew gets a few dollars a bottle.
Long branch is always in the cabinet.
@@jasonlloyd3984 It's definitely my favorite low-proof offering. Those who complain about the price ignore the fact that it does have an 8-year age statement, which is nothing to sneeze at. It also packs a decent amount of flavor and viscosity.
I would definitely at the TinCup 10 year. Absolutely love this bottle!!!
Yes, I agree. Evan Williams Black label at 86 proof is one of the best if not the best value for low proof whiskey, especially if you can get it under 15 dollars. I've seen it under ten bucks on occasion, so, if you really don't or can't spend more than twenty bucks, Evan Williams is the way to go if you want lower proof. If you want more proof, the Evan Williams bottled in bond is usually in the 14 to 18 dollar range.
Wild Turkey Longbranch... love the Mesquite influence
Great list, thanks for all your reviews, would love to hear your Four Roses punch recipe!
Not surprised you went with EW Black label, since that is your baseline bourbon, but really surprised that EW Single Barrel (at 86 proof) didn't make your list!
I got worried you weren't going to mention Four Roses! That's my favorite by far (or Jack, even though it's not a proper Bourbon). I'd love to have you drop that Four Roses punch recipe too - I might want to try that for Christmas
I would have to put my top 5 low proofers at:
1. Evan Williams Single Barrel
2. Wild Turkey 81
3. Four Roses
4. Old Grand Dad
5. Old Forrester
Honorable mentions would include the Evan Williams black label, Jim Beam black label, and perhaps, Old Crow.
Very Old Barton 86 when I can find it. But prefer most barrel proof expressions...
I am in Sydney, AU and we have sitting on shelves Buffalo Trace at 80% proof, Makers Mark at 80% proof and Benchmark at a lovely 37% proof.
Tin cup 10 year.🥃👍
What's your 4 Roses punch recipe?
Reading comments looking for this
Picked up a bottle of Dickel Barrel Select at 86 proof recently and it’s been a pleasant and crushable surprise.
Old Forester 86 was my pick for best low proof. I appreciate the USO hat. They provided some great shows while deployed.
My low proof Bourbon list Brother's Bond at #1(by far, I love the MGP flavor profile). Jack Daniel #2(how can this not he better than Basil Hayden?)Jim Beam#3, Even Williams#4, Old Forester#5, Longbranch#6, Very Old Barton #7
Old Forester 86, and one that is now only sold in Ky ....... Evan Willims 10 year old at 86 proof. And for summer highballs, Cooper's Craft 86.
Tin Cup 10 is my favorite low proofer.
That is a good one!
1. Evan Williams 1783 ( not the extra aged 90 Proof) which is also great
2. Evan Williams single barrel vintage
3. Jim beam 80 proof
4. Breckinridge
Totally agree on Evan Williams. Back before I could spend a lot or had the variety we do today, I used to call EW "the poor mans Makers". Have also loved Longbranch from day 1. Oddly, I figured the mesquite would give it a JD-type profile, but I was wrong....the mesquite just does something that I like....I love the smokiness of the vanilla and fruit.
Can you share your Four Roses Punch recipe?
I agree with Evan Williams and Old Forester 86. I would add Evan Williams Single Barrel in there as well, but it is leaving most markets, unfortunately. Also, I agree with your assessment of Benchmark.
I certainly have not samples as many as Fred but my top three or so would be Evan Williams Single barrel, Longbranch, Tincup 10 and agree with Evan Williams Black label & Old Forester 86.
Hancock President's Reserve! Well put together and the old Elmer T Lee and Blanton's mashbill-- and I get it, Blanton's is super overdone BUT at msrp its an interesting and well-blended premium low proofer.
Evan Williams Green Label, 80 proof, is my go to grab for easy sipping that taste great.
Old Forester 86 for me.
Glad to see I’m sippin the #1. Love EW’s bourbon ❤❤❤
Couldn't agree more with #1 and 3. I second the vote for Longbranch. Packing in good flavor at a low proof is an impressive feat, IMO, and longbranch does this well. Also, Dickell Barrel Select is pretty rich (if you count it as a Bourbon).
Really like Longbranch as well!!!
Jim Beam Double Oak is my bottle. I just really enjoy it as a daily sipper and the price is right
Nice video. Definitely a lot more options in the 90-99 proof range for sure. I’m a fan of the Michter’s line (although not bourbon) so those are my go to when I want a low proof bourbon. Otherwise I’m certainly going for something over 90 proof.
Old Forester 86 for the win
Tin Cup 10yr, Michter's American, Old Elk, Wyoming whiskey, Evan Williams single barrel, Old Forrester and Benchmark top floor
Tincup 10yr old. 84 proof.
Evan Williams Black Label is the bourbon that got me into bourbons. Haven't had it in awhile because I'll usually grab the white label before I'll grab the old 86... maybe I should dust off the bottle that's in my collection.
Edit: I actually wrote this before I watched the video all the way through! Your top 3 are right on par with mine!
great minds think alike right!
Tin Cup 10 year 👍👍
OK, you asked for my favorite low proof before you list yours. Gotta go with Evan Williams SiB at about 88(??). So easy drinking and TASTY even though that low!
Why would I buy cask strength at a higher price if I’m going to dilute it with water anyway? I’ve tried to find a BP product where I didn’t taste straight isopropyl but that has yet to happen.
Give us that Four Roses punch recipie
I have to add Wild Turkey 81 proof. Sure, I'd pick the 101 every time if I could, but I think their budget bottle can go toe-to-toe with Evan Williams black label. Also props to the folks mentioning Tincup 10 yr. I also like Michter's a lot, but technically speaking, they don't offer any bourbon under 90 proof.
Tin Cup 10yr and Old Forrester 86. Great tasting. Cheers
WT 81 is by far my favorite low proof bourbon. They aren’t bourbons, but Michters sour mash and American whiskey are killer pours under 90 proof.
If I can't choose Russell's 10 yr since it's 90 proof, I'd have to go with the 84 proof Tin Cup 10 yr.
ISO 4R yellow label punch recipe
Four roses small batch which was my first ever bourbon
What about OGD 80 or 86P? Never had those, only the BiB & 114.
The most recent iteration of 1783 is fantastic!
Yup, but it's 90P, so can't make the list.
Great top three. Evan Williams was my introduction to decent bourbon.
I think Tin Cup 10 is the only lower proof bottle I have - and it’s remarkably flavorful for 84 proof.
I've only got one, Breckenridge. If you allowed 90 proof it would be Eagle Rare. But I mostly only buy 100 proof and up.
Caluymet 12 yr, Angels EWnvy, Michters Toasted Barrel, Michters UA 1, Michters Sour Nash
I don’t drink much low proof stuff but I bought the 80 proof four roses once in college. Wasn’t too bad
Good answer on 86 proof.thanx
I’d definitely save the money on BH and select the standard OGD 80 proofer. Also I’d add the standard Wild Turkey 81 to this list. It’ll do in a pinch when you want WT but 101 isn’t available.
what would be your SHTF choice of whiskey to stockpile???
Evan Williams black label is it. I can still enjoy it, a great guest sipper, it was my beloved beginner bourbon.. Have to have it on hand. And the BiB is such a logical next step for guests and beginners. There are many good low proof bourbon out there but Evan Williams OWNS it.
Very Old Barton is what comes to mind at 86 proof. It's not available in the higher proofs, so I don't know how they compare.
What are your thoughts on Evan Williams single barrel?
Hello from Frankfort (about 1 mile from Buffalo Trace ;)) I have Old Forester 86 and Evan Williams Black in my bar at all times. I agree as much as I like OF86 I think Evan Williams Black is my favorite, even against stuff up to 100. The only addition I'd squeeze into the list is Very Old Barton 86. Love the channel!
Tin Cup 10 year!
Virgil Kaine 80 proof! Ginger infused. Pretty good
Jim Beam Black and Jim Beam Double Oaked at 86 proof are Good. Old Forester 86 proof is definitely a great value. I definitely agree with the Four Roses 80 proof. It is one of my favorite mixers. I was surprised how few Bourbons I have that are under 90 proof. My personal favorite proof point is from 100 to 107.
How do you like the Jim Beam Black I was going to get some at Walmart but got Evan bottled in bond instead. There was no age statement on the JB it just said extra aged.
I'm old enough to remember when Old Crow was a fine whiskey. Now I know who screwed that up. Thanks for the I.D. of the culprits.
Sub-90 for me, it's OF, Tin Cup 10, 4R, and WT.
What about McKenna? I'm curious.
Tin Cup 10yr is a hitter low proof if you haven’t tried
Coopers craft 86
How about Evan Williams 1783. Pretty decent. Priced right..
Evan Williams Single Barrels are low proof and very good. Along with the Evan Williams 1783
Agreed 100%
That Single Barrel is so good! Needs to be on the list!
Old forester is what got me into bourbon 🥃
Thoughts on Very Old Barton. It was actually took 2nd place in a local blind tasting. Enjoy your clips Fred👍
Tin Cup American Whiskey
Call me crazy, but I prefer Zackariah Harris to EW Black Label. I realize it's considered below bottom shelf, but it's pretty damn good for something you can pick up a liter for $14 (I live in NY. I've heard it's about $9 elsewhere). Great for sweet mixers.
10 year Tin Cup....hands down
I think angels envy is 86 proof maybe? If not it’s definitely no higher than 92, and that is a fantastic option. A little on the sweet side, but I get these delicious berry notes with heavy sweet cream and wisp of dark oak and tannins, Plus this honey and berries and occasionally a coconut shavings on the finish. Really delicious
Wild Turkey Longbranch would be the only one most people would know on my list. Otherwise, I've been enjoying some small, craft distiller products.
Only ones in my cabinet under 90 or Angel's Envy and OF86. Beam white label is good too, especially for mixers.
Thought you were gonna pick Evan Williams single barrel. My #1 would be Old Forester 86.
Best low proof for me would be Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage at 86.6 proof.
I went through my inventory list
Old Charter #8
Evan Williams 1783
Very Old Barton and
Ancient Age
Stunned that Wild Turkey wasn't on the list.
Great list, fun video. OF is my winner, thanks!
On a budget I choose Four Roses, and Old Forester 86
Tin Cup 10 year. 84 proof flavor bomb
Tin Cup 10 yr
Well my pick wasn't on your list. Gotta say I LOVE the 4Roses SiB (and especially the BS) so haven't tried the Yellow Label. And there are a number of lower priced Evan Williams bottlings that I do enjoy as mixers or on the rocks!! GREAT listing, even with BH sneaking in!
Carribou crossing. Though said to be a Canadian whisky reports are its blantons shipped to Canada or atleast rumors I heard.
Tincup 10
