I'm pretty sure that one of the scientists involved admitted to it and that it was one of a dozen tests that they conducted. They knew about the satellites and had conducted them only on overcast days; the Vela incident was simply an unlucky break in the cloud that made the detonation visible from space.

Where it gets interesting is, the test was of an ERW (enhanced radiation weapons), basically a neutron bomb, designed to produce more neutrons than a "standard" nuclear detonation. You cannot generate neutrons on this scale without SOME form of nuclear detonation, which is why the US eventually stopped using ERWs ourselves-- propaganda made them out to be "clean" bombs that only killed living tissue and left everything else, but that's not true and the benefits of the EMP/neutrons don't really outweigh detonating a nuclear device in the first place. Anyway, the rumors state that SA/I used something like an old bank vault built into the ground, an ERW weapon which produces much less residual radation, and conducted the test during a typhoon to suppress/disperse radiation in the air.
Still why they couldn't find anything? an ERW should have more radiation levels, right? do you think US were hand-in-gloves with Israel that time?
Israel and SA were collaborating militarily at the time, notably the R4 rifle which was ostensibly an Israeli Galil, among many others.
The Israeli Galil is itself a “copy” of the Finnish RK series of rifles, themselves “copies” of the Soviet AKM (which borrowed features from the American M1 rifle [named after its Québécois inventor, John C Garand]). Rifle designs are not great indicators of collusion.
I wouldn't say this is the greatest Nuclear mystery ever. I would personally give that title to the Banjawarn Station seismic event in Western Australia back in 1993.
I would give it to the soviet nukes that they... kinda... sorta... lost
Wasn't that the place owned by the Aum Shinrikyo group around that time?
Maybe they had something to do with it.
What about the nuke that Japan tested in what is now called North Korea?
You can’t detonate a nuclear bomb if it doesn’t exist.

3:22 look at these scientists with their vr goggles and 3d printers
I'm pretty sure that one of the scientists involved admitted to it and that it was one of a dozen tests that they conducted. They knew about the satellites and had conducted them only on overcast days; the Vela incident was simply an unlucky break in the cloud that made the detonation visible from space.
that kind of light isn't going to get blocked by any amount of clouds
@@schnoodle3 it does actually.

@Adventure Inc lol you're referencing something, that i doubt you were even alive when it happened, and most certainly not on the ship if you were, STFU
@@goji059 how does that hold relevance? I wasn't alive during Pearl Harbor, and obviously wasn't on any of the ships. Though my great uncle and his brother were. One saved the other, after he was thrown into the burning ocean from the USS Utah. And it's something I wont forget had occurred.
@Dr. Bright Why would they attack us? Where is the motive? Stop making a fool of yourself, it has been confirmed to be an accidental friendly fire incident. If they did it for malicious purposes, they wouldn't have immediately contacted the US embassy. Just... stop.

An historical overview of just how far certain countries would look the other way, while a certain country quietly built an arsenal of a few hundred nuclear weapons, and on occasion...cooperated with another fledgling nuclear power, aka The Vela Incident.
Good for them 👍

@ ComaDave ---- I read that about 1995 or earlier and why I posted this:
It Definitely WAS a joint collaboration between S. Africa & Israel and was the test of a Nuclear Artillery Shell. Why did Israel Not want this information disclosed? A very good reason, because Israel is Not supposed to have Nuclear Weapon but it Definitely DOES and was proved by Mordechai Vanunu aka "John Crossman" who is a former Israeli nuclear technician who exposed Israel's Nuclear Weapons Program to the British press in 1986.
Vanunu was a junior nuclear technician at the Nuclear Research Center at Dimona, Israel who exposed Israel's production of Nuclear Weapons and took 57 photos inside the facility to prove it. Google his name if you want more info on him and his deed's.

Video makers should really check how to pronounce words with odd spellings, there's loads of places online where you can check-up, even UA-cam pronunciation videos. As a UK person I roll my eyes when Americans try to say Leicestershire or Worcestershire.
They don’t seem to be mentioning that another such “incident” occurred in the Early/Mid-80s.
And.... It WAS Israel/S. Africa. Israel basically had ALL of the Nuclear Scientists it needed (many who worked on the Manhattan Project) to create a nuclear weapon, as well as several sources of fissile materials out of which to make them.
Yes they definitely possess nuclear weapons today and its a pretty open secret. South Africa also developed several bombs.
I represented apartheid-era South Africa in a historical security council about the Yom Kippur War in Model UN and my nation secretly sending uranium to Israel for the war was the crisis. Yeah it was interesting that South Africa was developing weapons of mass destruction

The city in Puerto Rico that the facility is in is pronounced "Ah-re-see-boe". Half Dominican, half Puerto Rican here. Can confirm.
Also, fun fact, that facility was in 007: Goldeneye.
Keep up the great work!!
I remember when I was still young enough to get pronunciations wrong while talking about a topic i otherwise understood very well
Graduate school hammered that out of me.
I don't think we can fairly expect UA-camrs to get pronunciations correct when it's not in their native language, sadly. As much as it grates on me, i think i can suffer through it.
But it's nice when UA-camrs bother to research correct pronunciation like television pros would, isn't it?
For England, James?
I feel like it was just a large meteor breaking up over the ocean. Most of them go undetected, because they explode so far away from life that we miss them, unless a satellite picks them up for us.
Mmm in this case no if it was a meteor it would just be a single flash streak this was a double flash in a circular area plus high levels of iodine were detected in Australia a few days later. Also many have confirmed it was a secret test between South Africa and Israel

Nukes cant just detonate like other conventional explosives. They work in an entirely different fashion
If it was underwater, it wouldn't detonate in this fashion but would look quite different.
@@MJonMBoviM well the US once accidentally almost nuked themselves.
They accidentally dropped a nuke out of a transport plane and upon landing 4 of the 5 safeties failed.

The double pulse was used by the United Kingdom Warning and Monitoring Organisation for detecting nuclear bursts. They used apparatus called AWDREY (Atomic Weapon Detection Recognition and Estimation of Yield). This detected both the optical pulse and low frequency radio (EMP) pulse.
