Rembrandt reveals the secret of light and dark and how you make this appear in a portrait. What do you start with? What colors do you use for this? And what is the effect of sharp or faint transitions between light and dark? The result of this lesson is the dead-colour: the colorless, first layer of the portrait, where the subject seems more dead than alive.
ING presents: The Rembrandt Tutorials. A series of six tutorials with the voice of Rembrandt himself, you learn how to paint a portrait in the style of Rembrandt. Together with leading language experts from The Netherlands Language Institute and Rembrandt experts from The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, his painting technique, character and language were mapped. Subsequently, with this data and based on 60 self-portraits, Carnegie Mellon University reconstructed Rembrandt's voice.
