    It is so helpful to us when you mention if you're doing wet on wet or wet on dry. Or if you're letting it dry before you do the next thing. Or if you're adding a bit of new color. Little intuitive things for you but so helpful to us.

    Ordered a bottle of Fine Line Masking Fluid, which is coming today so that I can attempt this beautiful painting. There's something about snowy trees in a landscape that always pulls me in, but this one, in particular, is on my *must try* list. After downloading your watercolor palette from your website, I'm hopeful the colors and mixes I chose will get me close enough to give this painting a go. I very much appreciate the time and effort you put into creating these tutorials and for all the great info on your website, Rick. Thank you!

    Just lovely. I wish so much I had one spot of your talent. Thank you for sharing your process with us. In NC, we might not see snow at all through the winter. Most of the time, the air conditioner intermittently runs up to Christmas and New Year's. Every once in a while we get a snow and we southerners freak out like we are all going to die. The schools and businesses shut down. We have no idea how to drive in the stuff either!

    Beautiful painting! I want to try it. Any advice for keeping liquid mask in the squeeze bottles? I tried using the small ones with metal tips, but the masking dried inside it and there's no way I can get it out now. Thanks!

    • @glorioskiola
      @glorioskiola 5 років тому +6

      RoamingRaven what I do is this: keep two bottles. One with the masking fluid and one with soapy water in it. As soon as you finish using the masking, take that tip off and put it on the bottle with the soapy water (put the clean tip on the bottle with the masking fluid, in other words, you switch the tips) and then squeeze the soapy water water through the tip you just used. Add more soapy water to that bottle to keep it full. This will keep the tips clean of masking fluid. Some people have said that window cleaner works well, but I just put a few drops of dish soap in water for the cleaning solution. I use the Fineline Applicators 2 pack from amazon.
      www.amazon.com/Fineline-Applicators-Applicator-1-25-Ounce-FL2023/dp/B00756OF7Q/ref=pd_bxgy_201_2/147-7311478-1117656?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B00756OF7Q&pd_rd_r=197cd04a-7b4b-4a3b-b5c2-7c410d22eef6&pd_rd_w=nxZyN&pd_rd_wg=45AgS&pf_rd_p=09627863-9889-4290-b90a-5e9f86682449&pf_rd_r=J32C26T2NCTTSVF2TNTY&psc=1&refRID=J32C26T2NCTTSVF2TNTY

    • @ferrelli1001
      @ferrelli1001 5 років тому +2

      Another thing you might consider is to use a hand sewing needle pushed in and out of the metal tip to clean it. Do not use a pin with a head or “ball” on the top of it. Pins are too big and won’t fit very well in the metal tip. A needle is thinner and finer and will do the job. Clean the tip out right away after you use the masking from the squeeze bottle as this helps a lot, too!

    • @RickSurowiczWatercolor
      @RickSurowiczWatercolor  5 років тому +3

      A lot of great comments already! Super suggestions. They can be a bit of work to maintain. Don't leave them uncapped for very long. I use inexpensive applicator bottles I purchase on line that I fill myself. I can purchase 15 empty applicator bottles plus 10 extra caps for less than $10. I try to keep them clean, but when they get to a point that I can no longer clear the tip, I throw the cap away a replace it with a new one. That's much harder to do with a pre-filled bottle that costs up $12 each. I'll have to give the soapy bottle method a go!!!

    • @RockinRavenVA
      @RockinRavenVA 5 років тому

      I appreciate the advice from everyone! The squeeze bottles I'm using aren't the best quality. I think the caps aren't tight enough. I'll try the soapy water trick and will also put some tape over the hole before putting the cap back on. Maybe that will keep it from getting solid over time.

    I am so inspired by your videos. They have really helped me advance in my painting, so thank you. I've been wondering, how do you personally keep your colors moist in the palette? Do you add fresh paint every day, or do you spray the old dried paint with water, or do you cover your palette when you are done, or something else?

    • @RickSurowiczWatercolor
      @RickSurowiczWatercolor  5 років тому +2

      Hi Leslie, I'm glad you enjoy my videos! I spray my palette periodically during extended painting sessions. When I finish a painting session, I spray it with water. If a color dries up, I put a half teaspoon or so of water in the well and leave it. The next day it will just fine. I'll give it a stir with a toothpick sometimes. I always keep it covered when I'not using it. The palette comes with a plastic cover.
