    I realize this video goes a little fast so feel free to pause and read stuff!
    Note: I am wearing mineral sunscreen in this video that makes me look a bit pasty. Last time I did this in a video (oil video) I got a ton of comments by people saying a vegan diet will turn you into a ghastly, unhealthy zombie lollll - Nope, just the sunscreen. Living under a bridge will have that effect though. Nice try trolls.

    try using this as a conversation starter in any dinner/class/event and watch the world burn
    one time I pointed out during an ethics class (in a political science major) that the solution to many environmental and social issues could be a change of diet... and everyone freaked out. some people pointed at how I was suggesting the destruction of western society's values -lmao what values- and that 'we may as well go all the way and be communists'.
    it was a fun -hellish- debate. obviously people left feeling butthurt af and at least two people said that I was a hippie that 'obviously didn't get how the real world works' lol

      ben l can you believe a few days after one guy from my class was eating a burger and we made awkward eye contact from across the cafeteria and he put it away. Later he told me that he 'would not apologize for eating a burger because we live short lives and I wanna enjoy mine'. My reply was 'I literally haven't said a word what the hell'.

    In my opinion, the biggest cost savings by far is health care costs. Health care impacts the environment, too, a great deal. Everything to construct and operate health care facilities as well as construct and operate medical schools would be reduced. Emergency services, and drug factories, medical equipment manufacturing facilities: reduced dramatically.
    Edit; As a followup, just thinking about the costs are so complicated. Still, if health care isn't the biggest cost, it's still up there.

I am already losing weight, which is a good motivating factor to sell vegan-ism to others, in my opinion. I need to get the cholesterol down, and this will help.

    You don't really address any of the other issues with world hunger, such as governments not supporting their local farmers, countries that cannot compete with industrialized countries (whether it be more labor required due to lack of tools or simply inferior crops), or that a large portion of farmers in poor countries focus more heavily on growing exported goods rather than crops for their own country (because they cannot compete with imported food).

    Can someone explain the biomass number to me? correct me if I'm wrong but is he suggesting the numbers of animals in the wild is 12% of the number of humans where as livestock numbers are ten times that of humanity? so there are approximately 7 billion humans, 70 billion livestock and 840 million animals in the wild? is that accounting for marine life? I don't follow the cited excerpt.

  • @BonnieMan42
    @BonnieMan42 7 років тому

    I have read on pro meat sites that the "feed the grain to people" argument is a misnomer as most animal feed is unsuitable for human consumption and also that a lot of grazing land is unsuitable for planting crops. I am mindful of the bias here* and was wondering whether these counterarguments were accounted for when making these claims - my first thought was simply plant crops suitable for humans instead but I am open to this argument being dismissed as unrealistic. Do you have a take or know of studies/research that address this point? Thanks.
    *I recognise that pro vegan arguments are also subject to bias
    but see that you strive to provide neutral sources of evidence, which is important.
    Your videos are a great resource for people like me, who have only recently adopted a vegan diet, and is appreciated thanks

      It doesnt matter, whatever it is.
      The land occupied with crops for animals, could be used in many other different ways.
      Even to leave it as it is, and let nature cover it, it would be much better, that what it is now.
      They just dont have any excuses.

    • @BonnieMan42
      @BonnieMan42 7 років тому

      Vagelis 4VP whilst I agree with what you say, we are talking about people whose livelihoods depend on this barbaric yet normalised industry and the onus is on those who recognise the madness of this industry to educate and change people's way of thinking, these are just ordinary folk like you and I at the end of the day. I have been quite content to eat meat and close my eyes to the cruel realities for 46 years so I'm not judging anyone, or taking a divisive vegan v omnivore stance either.

    • @bagiee1
      @bagiee1 7 років тому +1

      I agree...and im not judging either... im just stating the obvious that excuses like, "the land is not arable in places where we crop food for animals", just doesnt have a stance.
      These are just excuses meat-eaters invent for to support their way of living and habits. It makes them sleep easy at nights.
      But on the other hand, i DO take a stance. And that is in favor of plant based eating.
      I cant be with both feet at each side of the fence.

    • @BonnieMan42
      @BonnieMan42 7 років тому +1

      Vagelis 4VP I agree that they are just excuses but they are excuses that people will cling on to in order to validate their behaviour, it's human nature.
      Having only just started to venture into vegsnism and living in a family of meat eaters I am very mindful that being "right" isn't enough and that meat eaters are the biggest part of the solution so they need to be embraced not alienated when trying to expose them to the harsh realities. Personally this is all new to me so my aim is to educate myself, arm myself with facts and learn to cook better, so that my children will naturally adopt a vegan diet.

    • @bagiee1
      @bagiee1 7 років тому +1

      I can agree on that. Im from a meat-eaters family too... so i know how it is about.
      Even thought my dad had a triple by-pass surgery (he was eating the Mediterranean diet, for those who think its a more healthy diet)..he still continues to eat meat.
      Talk about how difficult is to overcome social programming.

    No, complete inequality is one owns ALL the money and nobody else does.

  • @kargaist
    @kargaist 7 років тому

    There is allready enough food to feed the world population.
    The problem is the economic system. It's more profitable to use grains for fuel, or simply destroy food before you hand it out for free or a to low price to those who can't afford it.
    Changing everyone to a vegan diet won't level those gaps in economic power and as long as food distribution is profit driven people are going to starve, no matter what diet this profit driven food industry supports.
    The problem with such thought experiments is that they don't take factors as economic power or profit driven economy into account.
    Furthermore the modell falls short because it assumes that the circumstances are the same all over the island.
    I live in a very water rich country, right know it would be extremely unprofitable to export that water. However we have more water than our agriculture needs.
    And it would be feasible to produce animal products without relying on imported grains or taking away agricultural lands, as there are pastures unfit for agriculture. It's what some small farmers actually do and what has been done for the last hundreds of years - but then you can't sustain diets where everybody eats meat more than once a month.
    Yes - consuming animal products, other than wild animals (an here in middle europe some wild animals are about 300% more than their natural population would be and are a great strain on the woods - so theres plenty of them), is a luxury paid for, by third world countries. And yes, feeding less biomatter to farmanimals would lower the cost.
    But I can't see how in an Industry that rather burns excess grains to drive prices up, instead of donating them, would be any different when we all where vegans.
    Furthermore the Places where droughts lead to armed conflict (Syria being the latest example, but also the Chad and Mali) lack water because of th changing climate.
    The droughts in Mali did affect herding nomads the most, that allready life in an environment not fit for agriculture.
    And yes i know that Animal production is the number one climate killer. But most vegans that I know are extremely proud and smug about how they save the climate while relying on a diet that is to great extents imported either by burning lots of amounts of fossil fuels.
    Feeding hungry people is simply not profitably.
    You'd have to change capitalism first, which is a can of worms that most vegans don't even dare to touch with a stick. indeed most are perfectly happy as long as big food gigants that patent plant genes, kill independent small farmingand have no qualms about letting thousands of people starve, produce a vegan ready made meal that they can buy in their local supermarket.
    I mean people are dying in their thousands from diseases that we could cure, but giving away the medicine for free would hurt our economy. I don't see how capitalism would work any different with vegan diets as a basis. As long as somebody is to poor he will be left to die.

    a generalist can never be right. not really. but there's some sense in your argument. it falls over a bit when you apply it to actual microcosms like for the many people who still live a bit bush. the strongest argument for veganism, and the one that makes total sense to me is that Im in a body whose needs are best met by plants so its just wrong therefore to eat animals, its wrong to treat others as property because of some quality of my especial choosing, like having horns or fins or being ugly or foul smelling, incomprehensible to me or palatable when grilled. nice presentation.

    • @backspace7124
      @backspace7124 7 років тому

      I've read it. It's been awhile, though. Maybe if you share some of your thoughts it will jog my memory. I can't remember what he said specifically about world hunger.
      If I remember right, he thinks that hunter gatherer societies are "in balance" with nature (not sure if this is how he'd put it, but never mind) whereas agricultural ones are more problematic. I'm personally skeptical of this view and believe that both ways of life are problematic to the planetary ecosystem. I do not believe hunting is "natural" to humans: natural hunters are equipped with claws, fangs, etc. We act outside of what our bodies evolved to do when we use tools to kill animals, and this is one of the reasons we've had such "success" taking over the globe. I wonder if one reason we developed agriculture is because we were so successful in this endeavour that tribes were running into each other and clashing more over resources, necessitating more efficient means of extracting food from the land. So, far from being "in balance with nature", the hunter gatherer lifestyle represents the first step out of that balance for humans, and agriculture the second step. My speculation is that the natural way was eating a predominantly or entirely plant-based of various fruits, greens, nuts, seeds, etc. with perhaps some occasional insects, wild eggs, and for coastal peoples, bivalves and other seafood we can collect just walking along the shore or in shallow waters.

      Dugong-gut it depends on how you get your food, and how it was grown. At the moment, a lot of people rely on animal labor if they don't have access to machinery (food sovereignists for example). Manure is also a huge deal right now for good yield, either on the industrial scale, or not.

      I wouldn't be so keen to trust places that call themselves communist to be that. That's like taking North Korea's word that they're democratic.
      America has more regulations then Denmark, but the US still has the strongest economy. Though, having the most wealth doesn't ensure the highest standard of living.
      Depending on the service, a free market approach would be very bad.
      For instance, military needs in Somalia are met by mercenaries, which we agree aren't ideal to say the least.
      In the US, we have competing for profit prisons, which have contributed to a whole host of issues. The worst being the conflict of interest between making more profit and reducing recidivism.
      Going all in with the market or government is short sighted. We have to take things on a case by case basis.

    The problem of hunger isn't caused by eating meat, it's caused by waste at the store, and at home. If we stopped eating meat, then we would actually have LESS food to go around, because animals eat the inedible parts of the crops we produce, and use land that can't be used to grow crops. Ending hunger will require diverting food from waste points, to where its needed.

    • @victorvelez8469
      @victorvelez8469 2 роки тому

      No the vast majority of the food fed to animals is completely edible to humans, so you are plainly wrong about that. And yes while food waste is major part of the problem it is still trumped by the food wasted to grow animals. These are easy facts to look up...

    • @derpd3881
      @derpd3881 7 років тому

      Don't feel bad :D No matter what you do those people will exist. Remember the Soviet Union? At the end most people didn't work, and the people themselves created the scarcity. Most of those hungry people are butt-scratchers from Africa and south Asia. You give them X amount of aid, they just breed and make more butt-scratchers, and then need even more.
      You realize when times are good, poor people become price insensitive, inflation jumps, and then everyone is back to square one? Many people just have a low standard for themselves. The hungry people set their own level, the starvation is literally their creation. They have behavioral microevolution to do that. The real solution is to let 'em die off.

  • @nazoya3506
    @nazoya3506 7 років тому

    just being a devil's advocate here, but why should we aim to feed as many people as possible (aka produce more food than we need to feed the human population, which we already are doing- we produce enough food to feed 10 billion people already) when this can result in human overpopulation and occur at the expense of wildlife? I would say that the objective is not necessarily produce more food, but improve distribution and reduce food waste while minimizing impact on wildlife (which veganism does)

    • @nazoya3506
      @nazoya3506 7 років тому

      if the population surges to the point where no matter what we aren't growing enough food to feed them, then one could say humans are reaching the earth's carrying capacity. would it be ecologically responsible to maximize everything and allow the human population to grow to 10 billion, 15 billion or even more, instead of trying to reduce or at least maintain its current size?

    • @tamcon72
      @tamcon72 7 років тому +1

      Typically, as others are stating above, overpopulation tracks with want, and population growth declines with plenty. People who are well fed--generally speaking--spend their time on things other than reproducing, the purpose of which is, in conditions of want, to create numerous offspring to grow food to feed one's family or numerous offspring to work to create capital to feed one's family. Less privation means lesser need for multiple offspring.

    • @Rose0fire
      @Rose0fire 7 років тому

      For sure. Works the same for a lot of animals, despite what people think. The more you starve/kill coyotes, the more they reproduce. Before its about to die, a tree will produce a whole lot of seeds to be dropped in the ground. Why wouldn't that apply to humans as well. Its an organism's lineage survival instinct. Or something like that...
      We definitly ought to reorganise the way we distribute food. A good alternative is buying local whatever grows locally.

    • @nazoya3506
      @nazoya3506 7 років тому +1

      Actually, humans do not practice semelparity like trees and fish (reproduce a ton right before dying). also, some areas have been desertified and degraded to the point where they cannot grow food locally and rely on imports

    • @nazoya3506
      @nazoya3506 7 років тому +1

      I would not attribute less reproduction to being well fed. It is far more likely that financial security (and being well fed is a result of this security) has way more to do with how many children one has, because generally people who are well off have better access to safe sex education, condoms and birth control

    It's really convenient that you ignore grass-fed animal products and leave it out of your video. Because if you didn't, you would actually realize that grass-fed dairy, eggs & meat would be the most sustainable source of food since humans cannot eat grass.
    2:17 -- Do you think calling meat, dairy, and egg eaters "idiots" helps your vegan cause? It doesn't. This is an ad hominem attack. And this is why you give vegans & vegetarian bad stigma.
    2:35 -- Not all humans can thrive on a vegan or vegetarian diet. If you don't want to accept that then you're clearly biased. Some people need animal protein & 80% of vegans go back to eating meat for a reason. And even if *you* can eat a vegan diet, a vegan diet over generations can be detrimental. Notice there are no multi-generational vegans. My theory as to why is because of natural selection. But even if my theory is wrong, the point is that you need to provide evidence of healthy multi-generational vegans. And if you can't do that, then to go vegan is a risk not worth taking if you actually care about the health of future generations. And if you don't plan on having kids and don't care about future generations then don't try to talk to me about ethics, because you do not have any.
    2:52 -- No we are not that island because there are so many factors you are not taking into account like grass-fed animals for example. On your little island you assume there is *no* such thing as grass-fed animals because it would be inconvenient for you to consider that. Does most meat & dairy come from non-grass fed animals? Yes. The solution is to advocate for more grass-fed animal products. You are fighting the wrong cause.
    3:31 -- We aren't just going to starve animals all of a sudden and feed people on the other side of the world just out of the kindness of our hearts. If animals go away then the grains go away. That's how it works. And most of these vegan organizations don't think about this but the most of the soy fed to livestock is the soy leftover from soybean oil production. So if it weren't sold to farmers then it would end up in landfills.
    3:42 -- A vegan diet uses 1/8th as much land as the baseline diet? What is the baseline diet? When you flash a snapshot of the title of a study for 3 seconds on the screen do you really expect people to take your word and know what you're saying?
    3:56 -- Actually there's more types of land that is *NOT* suitable for crop production, but *IS* suitable for grazing livestock.
    5:25-5:46 -- You just debunked your own video. And you didn't even refute any of those arguments you just made against your case.
    5:50 -- Your argument here is that if there were no factory farmed grain-fed animals, land prices would go down and crop prices would go down. This is not an argument for veganism, it's an argument against factory farms. Veganism is better than factory farms, but not optimal for land use, sustainability, humanity, or even the animals. Grass-fed livestock *is* optimal. It's the most sustainable form of farming right now. More sustainable than any kind of crop farming. And on top of that, it kills less animals to eat grass-fed dairy/eggs or even meat, than to eat vegetables fruits or grains. I hope you realize the amount of bugs "murdered" and small animals killed when pesticides are sprayed all over them and when the plants are being harvested and then transported. I would also argue that humane dairy/egg/meat farms *give* animals the opportunity at life who would not have an opportunity at life *at all* if everyone were vegan. And as for eggs & dairy, the chickens & cows do not even have to be slaughtered for their eggs or milk despite your misinformation about the industries.
    7:25 -- That statement you quoted is also false because he conveniently ignores sustainable farming of animal products like grass-fed livestock.

      So all the milking cows and laying hens end up living in a sanctuary when their production declines? At least in my country, the cows live like 4-5 years of constant insemination and calf-taking away, and free "happy" chickens complete their productive life after like 2 years and end up either in some minor farm (which doesn't need high egg production) or given away. I don't know how is that an "opportunity at life"...

    I just don't understand how people can still try to argue against veganism after seeing facts and statistics like this...

      VicariouslyVegan some people would literally rather watch the whole food burn in resource wars than question their own system of believes. it's like trying to argue with a flat-earther that the Earth is indeed round-ish: they will fight you until you decide that it's not worth to waste your breath anymore.
      still, sometimes all you need to do is plant a seed of doubt in a meat eater's head and that might be enough to get them to open their eyes.

      Camila Stefanie seems more like trying to convince globe believers as it is the default position. it makes more sense for your analogy. gravity! is equivalent to protein!

      eating animals is their religion and their believe is that it has to be this way.
      facts do not matter for them.
      You just need to sow the seeds of doubt and truth.

      IQ encodoc: That's a true concept, IQ, and it also applies to vegans and anyone else, for that matter. I really enjoy the wikipedia 'list of cognitive biases'. The limitations of the human mind are amazing, but there are solutions to overcome bias and exploit it.
      It's wise to use an argument which could exploit the bias of meat eaters to get them to change. I personally am switching because of nagging borderline cholesterol and want to lose weight.

      Right or wrong, there are very strong reasons. Habit, tradition, and bias, among others. Effective strategies must be developed to overcome these, though. Persuasion can be very powerful.

    Just want to point out that if animals were no longer raised for food then the government subsidies (something like 63% of subsidy money) could then go towards grain (some already does but as you said it's fed to animals) and vegetables (which currently only gets 1%). The actual numbers are in the documentary What The Health. Highly recommend. Anyway if the subsidies went away from animals and towards plants then everything would be much more affordable and everyone could eat well.
    Love your videos BTW. :) Thanks for your work.

      I have to point this fact out so often and noone gets this. Our socialist government here funds dairy and flesh industy and i still hear SJW vegans blame capitalism.

      social justice warriors ... 3rd wave feminists .... liberal cucks ... people that use the word male priviledge ... socialist leftists .... people with no ability to reason or logic ...you get the idea

      sjw stands for social justice warrior, an activist pushing women's rights, minorities rights, and minority religion rights. Racists and woman-haters despise social justice warriors.

      TheNewHope IsHere I'm not sure I do get the idea. .... sounds to me like you're OK with people who stand up for animals but not those who stand up for anything else.

    The microcosm island model is such a brilliant way to communicate the impacts on world hunger and the use of land and resources required to feed the world's population. Currently the sheer scale of food distribution issues are difficult to comprehend. A lot of us don't get to see the sheer amount of land taken up to raise and feed domesticated animals. Thanks for sharing his thesis.
