As you I was surprised by the move. I have felt that since Nikki passed away the atmosphere changed at Mercedes and Red Bull hired some of the best people from Mercedes.
Many of the issues of the Mercedes Benz team (too hesitant with strategy, slow pit stops, overheating cars etc) have always been there even during their dominant period, they just brute forced their way through all of those setbacks using the overpowered combo of Hamilton and whatever car he was driving during those dominant seasons. They used to start development of the next season's car when the current season's championship was sealed back in those days. Having no cost cap also helped them significantly as seen during the 2021 season where they kept using Bottas as a dyno to test engines lmao.

Another team entering the sport would reduce the amount of prize money each team gets plus another team existing means another competitor that can take away sponsors that those teams could have had instead. I think everyone can agree that not letting Andretti join for 2025 is a good idea as that would be the last year for the current power unit regulations with 2026 introducing new regulations so the Andretti team would have basically spent millions upon millions of b̶l̶u̶e̶ ̶b̶l̶i̶s̶t̶e̶r̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶b̶a̶r̶n̶a̶c̶l̶e̶s̶ ̶ pounds to use 2 completely different sets of cars that adhere to 2 completely different regulations.
